My first foray into #mosstodon ! This is in the #rspb Insh Marches near Kingussie #scotland. Sadly no little #birds flew in or out but boy is there a lot of moss!

I promise you, this is not a weird little rubber desert island toy for smurfs, complete with coconut trees.

It's a liverwort which I just found growing between some paving stones behind our house. It must be...2cm (3/4") high?

We got a spare wireless mouse from the classroom next to this office. I had to pair it to another Unifying receiver to create a new set. But whatever I tried, it refused to connect. Everything else I had would pair up fine, but this one mouse just wouldn't.

I went to fetch the original receiver from the classroom to see if it was still paired with the mouse. It was, so I unpaired it and now the mouse could connect to the new receiver fine. Everything finally worked like a charm and I returned the original receiver.

And, um... since the classroom's workspace was right behind the wall behind me... I realized I might've inadvertently done shenanigans with the teacher's laptop. She didn't notice it because she was busy teaching, but I hope I didn't accidentally remove any emails! 😬

In hindsight it was pretty hilarious. 😋

Behold the tale of a Facebook data scientist fired because he refused to run a little test that his bosses demanded ...

... in which he'd update Messenger so that it drained some users' batteries faster

The data scientist accurately noted that this was unethical as hell -- it could literally endanger people who rely on their phone as a lifeline

As @pluralistic notes, it's part of why "feudal security" -- trusting a big tech firm to keep you safe -- never really works: medium.com/@doctorow/when-face

For #SuperbOwlSunday

No idea how this superb screech owl got trapped in the screened porch, traumatizing all parties involved, but the episode was soon brought to a satisfying conclusion by propping open the door and letting nature take its course.

In honor of #SuperbOwl Sunday here is a superb owl, a great horned owl we met in Scotland

Found one frozen chanterelle (Cantharellus cibarius). Normally they don't appear before April, this one must be from late autumn. Left it to rest in peace – we still have some in the freezer.

New research by Michael Pocock and colleagues finds that "Nature-based citizen science is more than just a way to gather environmental data: it benefits well-being and nature connectedness of participants, and (when in combination with noticing nature activities) pro-nature conservation behaviours." I left some post stamps on my desk. I forgot that some of the dogs can climb on top of a tiny doghouse standing next to my desk. Guess someone won't get their postcards. [the two mauled stamps commemorate an old Polish comic book series "Kajko and Kokosz" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kajko_an]

I wonder what made this hole – there were a few of them in the area. Vuko didn't try to dig so I assume whatever it was it isn't below that ice but just walked away :)

A little late to the party but just realized it was superb owl day in the US. 🏈 Here's a short-eared owl on a stick.

I’m really glad not to be an atmospheric chemist right now.

I'm watching the discourse about labor on that other site, and talking about states relaxing child labor laws, etc.

And still no one is willing to admit that the labor shortage is largely caused by millions of dead and disabled people who have "left" forever and are still... exiting the labor market every day. We just can't say Covid is still wrecking us every damn day.

I'm completely ignorant of sportsball stuff, but I can at least offer a #superbOwl to honor this day!

This is one of the barred owls keeping us up at night with their hooting contests. Up to 2 feet tall and with a wingspan of 4 feet, they even prey on smaller owls. I love how they - despite their size and noisy socializing - glide completely silently between the trees like ghosts.
