@shriramk I think a whole lot of people from around the world have strong opinions about the guy without actually knowing how the city government is structured, how it works, what the mayor actually does, etc.
I know I certainly don't know how that government is structured, so I don't have an informed opinion. But a whole lot of people have strong opinions than I know aren't informed.
@RnDanger Yeah, so if they had accurate reporting then I would watch their news, and a lot of other people would too!
So they would get money!
So they should knock off the inaccurate reporting!
@RnDanger I think that if we are clear about not watching because what they say is false, maybe they would improve and actually be more accurate because that would get them viewership and money.
That's why I focus on their news being factually false rather than anything involving Trump or whatever.
We will watch news that is accurate. They need to make accurate news. They can get money by making accurate news. I just want to really focus on that.
@usluck Trump is awful, but this kind of post is really the sort of thing that got him re-elected.
Every item in the list is factually misleading, and people spreading this stuff instead of just calling him out for being a bad president encouraged voters to come out and vote for him in response.
@BryanLastRedDrop really something to see people dodging the issue.
Nothing new, same old same old, people eagerly supporting government power when they think it's imposing their will, but ducking the question of consistency.
@RnDanger I would say the problem isn't that they paid Trump or whatever this is talking about.
I'd say the problem is that they say things that are provably untrue. That's why so many lost faith in in American news media.
I honestly don't care who gets paid, but I do care that news media was gaslighting us.
@juliank have a link to a page outlining the change? I hadn't heard of it.
It's really something to see people in the same breath talk about being anti-fascist while demanding that government take on more power to tell people how much they can pay for rent.
It's a real sign of lack of self-awareness.
@sidereal How is it inaccurate?
@sidereal That's some nice pie in the sky thinking, that if only government is more powerful than it can manage society to its will.
But no, that's not how that works at all. Over and over we try it, and it's not how it works. And it's obviously not how that works. But we keep trying anyway, and it keeps failing, and then people say we just need to give government more and more power and try again.
But just to touch on the fundamental place that you're wrong, We do see governments around the world letting people charge whatever they want for rent, and yet rents don't go to Infinity. Why? Because of the people. People don't pay Infinity. They don't pay more than the rent is worth.
We don't need to let government take more and more power and interfere with our ability to rent housing.
We don't need to go fascist. Be clear that that is what you are promoting.
@sidereal rent control is a fascist policy! It is demanding State control of private activity!
@sidereal It's not, though. That's not how markets work, and it's not how government works.
Adams is reflecting democratic sentiment that maybe we don't screw over renters by limiting their options when they want to seek housing.
You have it exactly backwards.
@wkfry It's all up to the Senate.
At some point Americans might stop reelecting the same senators who keep screwing this stuff up.
I mean the point is that false information is being spread inside the White House. Fediverse doesn't really matter in the scheme of things.
@meidastouch The headline is wrong as he points out, it's not a bailout, it's a currency swap.
@RosethornRanger meh, often that's not true
@costasamaras.com Yeah, it does come across like you're looking for things to get worked up over.
Even in your own thread here you talk about the crowds that come to these events, and it sounds like you think it's only going to be used for one specific type of event and overlooking that the space can be used for many different types of events, multiple per week.
Saying the bathroom trailers are really nice doesn't change that maybe they shouldn't need bathroom trailers in the first place.
This renovation doesn't seem particularly valuable to me fuck, I wouldn't do it, and I think they really really should have gone about it a different way, but I think you are reaching to find something to be upset about here.
@technocrit probably start by transforming it into something that isn't a joke outside of the echo chamber...
The other people that Democrats need to bring to their side I think this stuff is just silly, at best, and horribly uninformed and ignorant at worst.
The movement needs to get serious if it wants to have any meaningful effect. It needs to realize how small it really is.
@fkamiah17 I always hate when people use their kids like this.
. We should not encourage it.
@burnoutqueen No, we democratically elect our representatives to Congress and the EC.
There is democracy. Sounds like you're just ignoring the democracy and then asking where the democracy is.
It's there, it just has nothing to do with the things that you're focusing on.
I think the most pressing and fundamental problem of the day is that people lack a practically effective means of sorting out questions of fact in the larger world. We can hardly begin to discuss ways of addressing reality if we can't agree what reality even is, after all.
The institutions that have served this role in the past have dropped the ball, so the next best solution is talking to each other, particularly to those who disagree, to sort out conflicting claims.
Unfortunately, far too many actively oppose this, leaving all opposing claims untested. It's very regressive.
So that's my hobby, striving to understanding the arguments of all sides at least because it's interesting to see how mythologies are formed but also because maybe through that process we can all have our beliefs tested.
But if nothing else, social media platforms like this are chances to vent frustrations that on so many issues both sides are obviously wrong ;)
