RT @ramsey
We used to say things like, “Don’t write a web server in PHP. Always use the right tool for the job.” Then we wrote web servers in JavaScript.

I was recently trolled that "is only used by 3% of developers, so is completely irrelevant." There are many good responses, but what would yours be?

I have been annoyed at the informal prevalence of proprietary MatLab among some of my colleagues, and didn't realize that R is a direct alternative for most problem-spaces. I much prefer the opensource mode of R. Some useful comparisons:

There are methods of coding that are complete paradigm shifts. Algol-style was my default, such as Java, C, JavaScript, and distantly, Python. Then I learned functional programming, completely changing my approach to problems.

And then there is CSS, which is itself a completely different experience. Different debugging, development, and problem[solving] space.

Two types of simplicity: the monolith (emphasis MONO) and the Linux approach, single-purpose composable. threadreaderapp.com/thread/155

Back to a language with state and syntax -- "how do I linebreak within flex display?" Answer seems to be `flex-direction "column"`

@icedquinn github thought it could do that with "Pull Request". One of my students asked me recently, "doesn't merge request make more sense?"

@redstarfish I know I can follow accounts at those other places, but can I log in with one of my Fediverse accounts?

@kev @FirewallDragons Hey! I just checked that out, too! I got it from the library, at least for the title sake

@verita84 That sounds like something unique! Decentralization of code. That sounds like a winning idea!

Looking into gitea.io/en-us/ to see how it compares to GitLab and SourceHut. Anyone have details, particularly for the non-git services offered?

@talpa @lupyuen Does it support CICD in any way? How about mailing (issue management)? I am interested. We already moved from Hub to Lab, but Lab is sadly hub-like sometimes.

@icedquinn email composition, LaTeX style. Reminds me of a Grad Student explaining LaTeX to me, griping how you basically have to program your papers (like that was a bad thing)

In so many ways tech is catching up with : JavaScript getting some immutability, React improving hot-loading and tree comparisons, and other stuff, Python with interactive kernel (REPL). What are ways you see maintains its lead?

@tennoseremel@mstdn.io ah! so it was just missing because it had other classes, too? That makes sense!

@tennoseremel@mstdn.io right you were! Just get rid of that `class=` nonsense and it worked
