this one wrinkled my brain. it takes me back to the idea from Don Hoffman (https://www.ted.com/speakers/donald_hoffman) that we generate our own reality.
As much as I've tried to acknowledge that I'm situated in the universe, so can't really observe objectively, at my core, I still cling to the idea of a Cartesian space that the objects of the universe are arranged within, where my body is a sort of avatar in the space, with my mind controlling it from "over here". Walker's conjecture on the nature of the big bang was very effective in pushing me outside that notion. I'll have to read more on their work (and, always, need to see more experimental results), but while I'm still clinging, I may have let a finger slip...
...which makes this sound rather dire😁 actually it's very exciting since I've been fascinated with questions about the nature of reality since I was a kid, but it's been some time since I've heard something that really changes how I think about it this deeply.
@AdiFoord what I've found with Mastodon (and the wider fediverse) is that you just have to start following folks who seem kinda interested in what you're doing or who are doing interesting things. they boost "toots" from folks they follow, so you find their accounts too.
because of how ActivityPub (the protocol Mastodon uses to federate = share posts across instances) works, you don't really have a global view to the fediverse (network of all federationed servers). I think that makes hashtags less effective of a discovery tool, but it works as a filter for the posts you would already be receiving
I don’t know what this is or what I’m doing but: Hi! 👋🏼 I’m Adi Foord. I study the activity supermassive black holes and focus mostly on systems that are in the process of merging 😮. I love X-ray astrophysics and created the *very* popular hashtag #XraysAreTheBestRays. I love my two cats more than most humans and I enjoy making hiking, making hot sauce and stickers!
How do I find more #astronomers and #womeninSTEM to follow? Help this millennial out with effective hashtags!
@mairin
you should also be able to enter the account name on your mastodon instance's website in the search bar which should pull up the account so you can subscribe there
@rysiek@mastodon.technology
@mairin Not sure if you got a reply, but you're meant to be able to type in your account with a subscribe button. You have to subscribe to a specific account, but some accounts may be "trunks" that deliver posts from multiple accounts
@rysiek@mastodon.technology
@rysiek@mastodon.technology you say that, but I think I got an error when I tried to subscribe to @blender from their site.
Hi there! I'm Lena 👋 I'm an astrobiologist, NASA Fellow, and science communicator! I create educational content about #astrobiology, the #science dedicated to studying how life got started on Earth the potential for life on other worlds! I mostly post on TikTok, but I plan on starting to use Mastodon, too. Excited to connect with you all! 😀
"Mom, can I have a 6502 computer?"
"No, we have a 6502 at home."
The 6502 at home... #retrocomputing #mos6502
Meeting a (semi-)famous person isn't how I expected it. In my case, I was a few feet away from them and was going to say something, but I just sort of realized that I didn't actually have anything to say to them other than "enjoyed the show" or whatever. They weren't performing then, so, like with any stranger, there was no connection, even though I'd listened to them for hours by that time. I even saw them walking on the street, a block away, a few minutes later, and almost called out, but stopped myself thinking to myself, "they don't know you." It was an odd experience.
here's a thing I was interested in lately for no reason in particular https://nuclearwarsimulator.com/screenshots/

@tfardet there's a pretty idea, but it requires great masses of people to agree to give up meat for lentils: I don't see how that happens without that being basically the only option.
I'd bet more on cleaner ammonia production and lab grown meat scaling up... those options don't require as much reformation of habits of as many people. probably the political force of meat producers is the biggest obstacle to lab meat, which is no small thing, but the engine of factory automation favors the vat over the idiosyncratic movement and feeding of livestock for economics in the long run
@tsturm that's neat. what process makes that?
tried making "pretzel bagels". basically, modified the pretzel recipe I had done before, but just made hoops instead of the pretzel "knot"... apparently the way I made the hoops isn't typical: you're meant to poke a hole into a ball and then widen the hole, which makes more sense, honestly. The way I got the gluten stands to go more in the shape of the bagel is cool though
(no pics because they kinda look shit even if I'm still proud of em)
@freemo
yep, was getting several 500 errors just composing a toot, before posting, then it resolved in a few minutes. a separate time I saw the same 500 errors, then refreshed and saw a warning page, though I didn't note down what it said (sorry)
sometimes I forget that most of the people living today probably wouldn't be here if not for artificial fertilizer.
@lucifargundam oh, I first compiled a Linux kernel years ago. That's super simple though - they have menus and it's really well documented. I usually don't bother now since the only kernel features I f**k with are modular anyway.
I'm not especially good with my hands, so fiddling with those wires was genuinely challenging for me.

I somehow didn't realize this movie is only from 2000. I thought it was older since classic films translate to "old movie" in my head
A capable software engineer and aspirating (sic) cook. Also posting about space stuff (mostly NASA) occasionally
