@DataDrivenMD I assumed the plan was the same as email.
Let people host their own. Let people host a free experience. Let people host a monetized experience.
None of those choices necessarily have to affect others' due to the federated nature of the service.
The idea that "the fediverse" needs to be "financially stable" is unnecessary. Individual instances need to be financially stable, whatever that means to them.
@peterdrake @andykorth Maybe I've just gotten used to the .NET/Windows way. 🤷♂️
Here's some more info about how it works behind the scenes: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/api/system.globalization.compareoptions?view=net-7.0
On this day in 1969, humans walked on the moon for the first time. Celebrate this monumental achievement with this online reprint of LIFE Magazine Special Edition from August 11, 1969:

@TMRuppert Damn, that's cool. I would totally buy a reprint if one was available.
@peterdrake Sorting by ASCII order would be terrible anyway because then upper and lower cases of the same letter would end up in totally different sections in the results. Any competent alphabetic search would split and sort between letters, numbers, and punctuation first.
Also, I have not heard of using the underscore that way. That sounds like a sign that you need to refactor instead of hacking stuff in. I always name things based on their form/function. If I prefix it with anything, it's the type (i.e. "MatSteel")
🤦♂️ toothless bullshit
@geekruthie @va2lam @kf @dan As one of the many folks in Orlando who has a pride flag up, yeah, they should be fine here. We're not Tallahassee.
@Catelli @ZachWeinersmith@mastodon.so(A) Electrical impulses in silicon really aren't so different from electrical impulses in biological neurons.
(B) Many humans make art, not because they desire to, but because they were told to and they desire a paycheck (like making an actress 10 lbs thinner in every frame of a movie).
(C) Finally, I think the idea that only humans can make art, in a way, incorrectly anthropomorphizes art itself. When the whole of nature comes together to create a beautiful landscape, and a human comes along and takes a picture of that, who is really the artist?
@Catelli @ZachWeinersmith Agreed. So why do people refuse to accept the possibility that computers can create new art, even when it's derived?
@Oggie Well, you're describing conversational chat AI. There are different forms that can write and maintain longer chains of context, even now. Especially if you train them yourself for best results.
@Oggie I agree with all of that, but don't you think that several of those emotional cues are formulaic enough to be interpreted and regurgitated by AI? Think of the rom-com genre as an example. Those are just patterns and AI is great at mimicking patterns.
@Catelli @ZachWeinersmith I think you're painting humans with too narrow a brush. Do some of us add insight, instinct, and skill? Sure. But there are plenty of humans who are happy to make soulless copies too.
@ZachWeinersmith Is it really that upsetting to see an AI do your craft? The AIs have serious weaknesses. The quality of their output tends to be on the order of a kid fresh out of college. They can regurgitate, but not understand.
I feel like, if you've spent years getting "good" at something, only to be surpassed quickly by an algorithm, it's possible that you just weren't actually that good to begin with. And that's fine! Not everyone is good at everything, and we don't have to be good at something to enjoy doing it.
But maybe, just maybe, AI will wipe the floor with the people who were just going through the motions and putting out mediocre work. But those with talent, who have truly found their calling, will rise above.
Obviously, this would be a much easier pill to swallow if our livelihoods and well-being weren't so closely tied to our work and we had UBI or something, but in the long run / big picture, I think it will be a net positive.
@lucifargundam That life is waaaay too macro for my tastes. I'd much prefer a mouthwash of bacteria or something that accomplishes the same thing instead of a big slimy worm rooting around in my mouth.
@ruby0x1 Have you written somewhere about why you made this decision? I totally understand if you can't talk about it, but reading about the hows and whys of these kinds of decisions can be really beneficial for fellow indie devs.
@interfluidity Possible, but I think a more likely reason would be for SEO. By getting another website to link to that website, it drives the linked webpage's profile up in results, making scam sites appear more legitimate.
