I guess someone forgot to bribe the right official in Brazil...

I swear, Brazil is almost as corrupt as the US.

mention of self-harm

And that number only counts those who die from the initial infection. More than ten times that amount get long-COVID and some of those will hang on for months before they finally die and are therefore not counted in those stats.

It also doesn't count secondary deaths, such as loved one's who comment suicide in grief. The actual number is 50-100% more than what is reported.

Any deaths at this point are a crime -- literally, a crime.

Is that even legal?

>"Had SVB collapsed then, FDIC would have made us whole. But probably not in time for us to survive."

When the FDIC steps in, deposits are available literally overnight. You, and anyone you had cut a check to, would not have even noticed it.

>"And I absolutely do feel bad for the employees living paycheck-to-paycheck who might not get paid."

When this happens, employees are first in line. (At least that's how it used to be decades ago, not sure if that's the currently the case with all the graspingness in the system now).

Also, a company would need to have more than 100 employees to exceed the 250K in weekly payroll. If their employees were near the poverty threshold it would take a few hundred employees to exceed 250K in a week. I think it would be gross mismanagement for a company that size to not have any risk management in place for an interruption of liquidity like this.

It seems to be working. I saw your pic of Simon on the Local public feed and I responded to it.

Now people can click on your original post and see this thread (which is public).

There's a 50/50 chance that a wormhole is actually an inter-dimensional tunnel through an apple.

Here's the proof...

More people died this week in the US from COVID-19 than were killed in the 9/11 attack. Every week, another 9/11 attack.

Please wear your respirator when you are around other people.

Do a seal check on your respirator when you wear it.

It is more dangerous to be in public without a respirator than it is to drive without a seatbelt.

Well, when you finally get around to writing it, make sure it includes self-defecating humor.

@adamrichard

You're describing a post-scarcity economy, which we have now for information and media. And we have enough productivity now to provide for the basic needs of everyone in the world.

The reason why we still have advertising and why many people are lacking in their basic needs, has to do with human nature and power. A significant minority of people seek power and control over others and they are artificially maintaining scarcity in order to maintain control.

This is why we still have advertising. The advertisers want to control the content of the media in which they advertise. Formerly advertising was about selling products and services, but that doesn't happen much anymore -- now it's mostly about control. And those who want to control others will sabotage any efforts that attempt to undermine the system they use to exert that control.

This is why systems / networks / communities that are developed which are not ad-supported or otherwise locked into the current economic system often fail -- because they are sabotaged by those who want to maintain the current status quo.

It takes a lot of planning and effort to design and build a network or community that can withstand such attacks by those incumbents.

>"In the "real" world, a manager with a spreadsheet... "

Actually, that's how businesses are supposed to do it. But in the real "real" world, the manager would contact her company's biggest competitor, Evilco, and cut a secret deal with that CEO to give her a C-suite position in exchange for sabotaging the release of her current company's game.

Then she'd go back to her current boss at Badco, and tell him that they can save a ton of money and release the game sooner if they cut back on testing and fire more people. Then when the game releases early, she collects her bonus and moves to her new position at Evilco.

When Badco's game fails because it wasn't properly tested, and Evilco monopolizes the market, she blackmails Evilco's CEO into letting her run a new subsidiary they acquired with the profits they made from having a monopoly in that game market.

(But I guess we probably shouldn't teach our kids to be so cynical, huh? They'll learn that on their own.)

@peterdrake

In the "real" world, a manager with a spreadsheet would guess at how much testing would be required over the lifetime of the software, then guess at how many more hours of programmer time would be required to finish the testing suite, then compare the programmer's salaries to the salaries of the human manual testers. If the latter was cheaper, she'd fire the programmers writing the test suite and use the cheaper human testers.
