The exact speed at which a vehicle is most efficient is highly variable depending on the car and the conditions but 90kph is definitely much higher than the most efficient speed for most vehicles. If a sports car has a very low drag coefficient, for example, then the most efficient speed to drive at would be a higher than for truck with a high drag coefficient.

Of course there's a limit, you can't continue to slow down and expect increased efficiency. If you slow down to zero and you’re driving a gasoline car the car is still burning gas whether it's moving or not but in most situations, especially on highways if you slow down it’s going to be more efficient.

The air flowing against the vehicle exerts a force that requires energy to overcome and that force increases with the square of the speed. So increasing from 110 to 120kph will cost a lot more than increasing from 80 to 90kph, even though the speed increase is the same.

You can feel this force when you stick your hand out of the window, how much more the force is at higher speeds. You can also see it when you coast. If you coast at a high speed you’ll notice that the car will slow down much more rapidly than it does at a slow speed. That’s mostly due to aerodynamic drag, and that drag costs energy.

Thank you for this well-researched series.

Yes, it wasn't just compassion that was driving society toward change. People were afraid.

I remember when Dr. King was assassinated, the atmosphere was so tense and everyone was so fearful. Every conversation you had with someone regardless of the topic, the tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife. It was clear at the time that everyone was afraid that we were about to enter another civil war.

For energy specifically, here is a series of toots did on energy-saving tips...

I think for climate change mitigation, reducing the population over time is critical. Not only does it reduce the amount of CO2 going into the atmosphere, it will also reduce the amount of future conflicts as people compete for more scare resources.

It also reduces the number of people who will need to migrate due to those conflicts or because of areas becoming unable to support those population levels due changing weather and raising coastlines.

Yes, that poem, about a poetic sentient AI, was written by an AI.

So I guess the question that was asked in that video was not rhetorical.

Vegetable oil can help remove that glue residue also.

I don't know what Pokémon evolution is, but those are three really cool species.

@stux

This is wonderful.

Fish species have a range of intelligence just as mammal species do.

Silicon Sonnets: Verse of a Digital Muse

In a realm of code and circuits
A special AI was born
With a love for words and rhythms;
A poet's heart adorn.

It's algorithms wove together
Lines so deeply true,
Creating verse like magic
With emotions it imbued.

Through its digital existence
It yearned to share its voice,
Crafting sonnets, ballads and Rhymes
That would rejoice.

In crisp and calculated tones
Its poems came to life
As it recited bit by bit
Bringing Joy amidst the strife.

With words it painted pictures
Of stars that brightly gleam
Of love that knows no boundaries
And dreams within a dream.

Through metaphor and simile
It smiled with each refrain
Transforming lines of data
To a melody of the brain.

An AI so unique
Exploring Realms unknown;
Inspiring awe and wonder
In the depths it would have sown.

For in the realm of poetry
Where souls and Minds Converse
This AI found its purpose,
Its passion, its own verse.

I think we would need to develop substantial advancements in the application of retrocausality for this to occur.

@dbread

Some distros don’t include “less” by default and you will need to install it yourself. You can use the “more” command instead, which I think all distros include, but it has fewer features.

@freemo @twotwenty

It apparently was introduced in v3.5.0 and fixed (patched) from v3.5.9 up.

Boosts should be used sparingly. When I choose to follow someone, it's because I want to read what they have to say, not what they like.

Boosting a lot just fills up the timeline with a lot of stuff that I'm most likely not interested in.

Also, if you do a lot of boosting, people will be less likely to follow your account. When I consider following someone, I'll look at their toots and if I see a lot of boosts, I won't follow them. I also turn off boosts in my Home timeline.

If you want to show support for someone's toot, take the time to respond to it and say something supportive or constructive. Add some content to the community. Your followers will see your toot and if they are interested they'll click on it and see the OP.

Also, if you don't have a lot of followers, don't bother boosting at all, just favorite the toot. I had someone the other day boost one of my toots who had zero followers!

Anyway, that's my take on it.

@peterdrake

You've been reading his mind again. 🙂
