There is one type of cybersecurity person who drives me absolutely crazy, might-just-block.gif, and it is the one who looks at any friendly and sociable internet trend that involves something that could be potentially used as a password reset question (no, I'm not talking about the fuckery like tricking people into posting their credit cards), and ruins the fun. They are the Fun Ruiner Pedant (tm).

"Don't talk about your favorite foods!"

"Don't talk about movies you like!"

"Don't talk about important moments on in your life!"

"Don't post your mom's obit, it has her maiden name!"

It's not peoples' fault that password reset methodology is fundamentally flawed, archaic, and ridiculously insecure. That's our problem to fix. And for god's sakes, everybody in infosec social spheres already knows their threat model around this information. Those are totally normal things for human beings to talk about in friendly conversation. So let's get to fixing the problems by making account security questions and processes less utterly ridiculous. It's almost 2023.

NOTE: If anyone wants to be added to this list just let me know.

Ok so this seems to be most of the people who publicly stated they had interest in developing the "United Federation of Instances". All of you should have gotten the first draft and opinions were heard and discussed.

Today I will be moving the first draft over to git (either git.qoto.org or gitlab.com). From there I will encourage each of you to provide suggestions as to edits there, and raise discussions in issues. This way we will be public and have an open transparent forum that keeps the changes on record.

While public feedback is being debated on the proposal I will begin a rough draft on the complete by laws (which will try to represent the broader points in the proposal document). That too will be on gitlab and open to discussion

From there as the movement grows we can begin discussing launching it.

I suggest all communication on the fediverse about this use the hashtag so it is easily searchable.

Since this is a public post I will now share the link to the early draft here, please keep in mind everything here is open for discussion so if anyone doesnt like the current direction, please speak up, we want you to be heard.

> what do you mean with great eaualizer?

The Colt Single-Action Army, a very widespread revolver, was known as "The Great Equalizer". (Consider the outcome of a fight between two guys where one is 5' tall and one is 7' tall, then consider the outcome of the fight if they both have guns. One is more predictable, but it's a somewhat more even match in the other case.) It was a joke about the software, which I have called Revolver, and which is intended to achieve something similar by giving

> Mob rule and elitist mob-manipulation can only be averted by proactive democratic education which needs to be able to prevail against financed propaganda-bot-spamming, a big problem of social media, especially laissez-faire social media.

I do not think that's the case at all: here we are, able to engage with each other on an anarchist instance instead of a democratic instance. There is nothing *more* lassez-faire than anarchy, and until Revolver ships, this is the closest I can get: I have to get rid of things that break the server or that are illegal where I live.

The thing that allows mobs and propaganda is jamming everyone together under a system. I've talked about this a lot, but am busy for the foreseeable future; I'll see if I can't dig up an old post if this doesn't make sense to you. You have to organize people to push your agenda on them; disorganized people can't fall prey to this. If there is no boat, you can't affix a rudder.

This is why I dislike Trotsky: he was a hard-liner for a self-appointed hierarchy of authority. 4th International, then the vanguard of the proletariat, then the proletariat, then the peasants. He believed that the peasants were too stupid to avoid getting coopted.

> but media and the spaces in which such societies grow are designed, and must be designed educatedly.

This is an approach that presupposes the mass-media approach from the turn of the previous century. That's one of the problems with Twitter: you can manipulate Twitter in ways that you cannot manipulate fedi.

> Your current approach works as long as this is a small overseeable community but as soon as it becomes bigger and gains more traction you will have to deal with classic problems of propaganda and discourse manipulation.

I trust people to not be stupid or to accept the consequences if they are.

And that's the issue with trying to control propaganda: the second you do that, you've built a rudder, and the wrong hands will get on the wheel as an absolute certainty. Don't build the rudder.
