@peterdrake mentioned and is a huge cause! Support true democracy. Popular Vote should elect a president.

It is really disheartening - there is so much ignorance, intolerance and hatred being spewed out under the blanket of 'free speech'.

I stealth visited some sites in the periphery of a large right wing organization, and was dismayed by what you can read in their publicly viewable feeds.

They are empowering a lot of bad things. The bad example is even coming from the top, with some current politicians in power being astoundingly creepy, corrupt and borderline criminals.

Their underlings shut up and don't comment or oppose, since the man in top has support and votes that keeps their party alive, and for now, in power.

Big Tech situation, which Casey mentioned, is another huge bunch of issues.

Corporations that use all kinds of legally allowed tricks to keep their profits untaxed (Apple, Amazon). Others that spy in every service they provide their users for free (Google).

Android being so closely tied to Google is a huge concern. Thankfully there's sometimes an option - some models can take alternative ROMs like the ones developed by LineageOS (formerly called CyanogenMod).

lineageos.org/

If you install their rom, you have a choice of using an image *without* the google android frameorks. Which means too you are giving up on usign their Gapps, mail, etc.

These can be accessed via browser, and apps can be picked up at F-Droid and other alternative android app stores.

I have CyanogenMod installed and running on my HP Touchpad, along with its original WebOS (a wonderful operating system, way ahead in its time and design, compared to the two major ones now).

@kgary
You are very welcome.

Regarding your work and research topics, are you familiar with the Slowly app? it's available in both android and iOS, and it allows people to find and correspond with pen pals all over the world.

I think it has major implications for MH, as it allows people to connect even if not knowing anyone with similar interests locally.

I discovered it 6 months ago, and have spent many many hours writing letters and reading my penpals responses.

Might be more for adults but there are younger people using it too. A controlled edition with some kind of age filtering and security would be wonderful for Education applications (i am a retired teacher myself).

getslowly.com/en for more info.

Great app, won various accolades on Google Play and App Store.

@realcaseyrollins Uhm, I am not surprised by the current results (no spiler comments from me).

It's pretty logical, for anyone following these for some time. Will post more of my reasoning later, when poll closes. The one I chose is not one I personally enjoy using either (as it's freaking locked down, UI wise).

@Craigvulcan

I think not, although he probably wishes he did. Good employment with an elite investment firm?

I would like that myself too.

Our system admin here, @freemo is a scientist and could help suggest possible academic connections.

For now I gave you a link to anew user guide which helps understand the operations in this new "fediverse" (Federated Universe).

We have access to posts made in any of the hundreds of instances, servers out there. People in any of them might be reading this thread, and might reply with suggestions of their own, so the word is out.

The network here is smaller, more humane, not corporate controlled and without the algorithms that control what people see in their timelines in the large corporate owned sites.

A lot of good ideas, to try and find a way back to better days in the Internet.

You will add content to your own feed by finding good people to follow. Since you posted the super cute kitty, I assume you enjoy cats? He have a bot here supplying nice pics all the time.

@catpostingbot is the one, just visit and add a follow and you will see the posts in the "Home" feed list.

I would recommend using a laptop or desktop computer for serious reading and fun, mobile does work but doesn't do the network justice. 😉

Enjoy your stay! I just joined about a month ago.

Hello Kgary, and welcome to Qoto.

Love the kitten, thank you!!

Enjoy the network and all it has to offer. If you are new to using Mastodon, there's a good guide here: lifehacker.com/a-beginner-s-gu

@binsrc

She could have suggested that you write a short story about it too, it would be a nice way to connect a teacheable moment to the curriculum.

I love writing, reading, thanks God we have a nice place here to do that! And to the boss, paying the bills and keeping the server ticking...
@freemo

@Aastha1801 you are very welcome.

The network here is smaller, cozier and has nice people. Just find a conversation that interests you, and join in, respond to a new post, sometimes they are sitting there, ignored. It does matter to the poster, if they get a reply.

I have been here for just under a month, and have accumulated a high number of posts, most of them with content I find interesting, not simply chit chatting.

Lots of nice content, good people. Enjoy, Aastha! 😺

@freemo @namark

You have a point, but this is part of a political campaign, and sound bites are what some people can absorb only. After being bombarded by excessive distraction and publicity messages.

Doesn't detract from it being a HUGE issue.

For the record, I am an observer from afar - not in the US, not voting, but everyone in the world gets affected by the results of the US election.

Just see what's going on for the past 3 years.

2020 will not be a pretty year to live in, me thinks. Things could turn nasty.

@yukiame LOL, she sure did. 😺

I found that image a lot of fun, copied and posted it here, amazingly later in the day found and visited the home page of the post's author - Nolan who is at toot.cafe/@nolan

He's the developer of Pinafore, a wonderful and FAST client for Mastodon that I have enjoyed using too. pinafore.social

Kudos to Nolan and Mom. 👍

The interesting Guide to Mastodon (with some parts that are a bit aged at this point, but good read overall) is here: hackernoon.com/what-i-wish-i-k

@nolan

@realcaseyrollins
Awesome, Casey, happy to know that! 👍

Now we just need to get the Android version out again.

Waterfox is running so well here, and I never had SO MANY open tabs at once. So much to read, keep in mind, places to investigate.

Almost 3 GB of RAM allocated to it, and that includes one private Window set (with emails open, and some others) plus the main, loaded, zillion tabs (twice the laptop screen width I would guess) with my current reading and To Do, Investigate , Intriguing web pages.
