@tripu Eugen just pushed a change in the Mastodon Git for these same changes.

Whitelist and Blacklist now have new words defining them.

github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/

most instances run on the charisma of a few people on it. not always the admin, but often. at least they are the seed that the community can crystallize around

@rz Very nice, expertly done and time consuming, but remains here today.

Thanks for the post!

Getting Good Penpals, a Slowly Users Guide

.
This has been posted and recognized as a valuable resource at Reddit for maybe almost two months now.

After sitting in my Blog editor for almost 30 days, I decided to publish it -- in Two pages, with a final Part 3 coming soon dealing with the loaded question of "Adding friends via Slowly IDs".

See "Getting Good Penpals, a Slowly Users Guide - Part 1" here. This introductory part has background info, and continues on part 2.
See "Getting Good Penpals - 2. Three Ways to Go" for part 2.

Hope you enjoy reading this, a more detailed, illustrated and carefully written version of my original Reddit forum post.

@icedquinn

Thank you for the suggestion, I will check it out. I have been using an enhanced wide screen layout that I really enjoyed. But it's true that simply going for very wide panels is not ideal.

I created a topic describing it, and sent a suggestion to the Glitch-Social team, who might chose to implement it maybe.

The Toots display in Bloat FE is indeed too wide.

@a1batross @igel

@mathlover Maybe I should clarify that Quatro means 4 ? As in, after 1-2-3, Quatro. Pro.

It became part of an office suite much later, along with WordPerfect, which was the King of word processors for a long time in DOS world. (I like MS Word, DOS version, much nicer, imo).

@mathlover Spreadsheets were the first big success story of the nascent software industry, way back in the late 1970's.

Visicalc was the first one, and made lots of money. Later a new upstart came in, and also was very successful -- Lotus 1-2-3.

Sometime down the road, Quatro Pro joined the fray, and seems to have been named in pure jest to Lotus's very successful program.

Excel came many years later, and it was a Windows application from the very beginning I think.

My first spreadsheets were in Lotus 123, and it was quite interesting. 😋

@icedquinn

LOL, yeah -- Bloat has wonderful use of the wide display in my laptop (something I highly prize!) but indeed looks like a Beta version still.

Soapbox FE is more polished and has a big focus on making things simpler, a big help for its potential users. I think it will be quite successful as an alternative FE -- and could come to Mastodon too someday.

@a1batross @igel

@lupyuen That is an interesting book I have read it too. After seeing a glowing review.

@mathlover Hope all remains well until you can replace it.

Pinafore runs in a web browser, and can be used even in Mobiles that way too. It's light, and switching instances is a snap -- ONE click action.

And I do use more than one tab with pinafore, keeping 3 or 4 open with different instances in each is possible.

It also displays MarkDown formatted content properly when the instance supports it, as well as accepting new posts formated in MD. All my blog announcements and most of my posting is done with MarkDown, either at GlitchSocial or Pleroma instances nowadays.

@mathlover It's definitely much better than Twitter, the fediverse, and much more interesting too - so much to discover.

I have lots of accounts and am active in various places, easy with a good client like Pinafore, which I use and recommend.

@mathlover mastodon.social is itself blocke by some people, believe it or not -- who say the instance is not moderated adequately.

There's pettiness, animosity, small mindedness and strutting for power involved in all this.

Some people are admins of very small instances, but frequently out and posting their FediBlock recommendations -- which others with less familiarity with the fediverse follow as true gospel.

Gab had disappeared from federated space about 10 days ago -- having switched off ActivityPub protocol all together and on course to build their own, alternative federation protocol, from scratch.

We had some people asking if that meant the end of some of the blocking this instance suffers from -- as I mentioned some are significant, and I have experienced personal harm due to blocked content or denied services due to this being the source.

Not sure what Gab's path is now, regarding protocols, it would be ideal if they stayed out all together.

That by itself will NOT clear a lot of problems this instance has -- as some are rooted on the contents of the Terms of Service here, or personal problems with the administrator.

I would advise keeping all these things in mind -- and plot your own course, find the best places to suit you or your various interests, projects, etc.

Myself, I have been tacking away.

@mathlover

>> So can someone explain this reasoning to me? I don't exactly follow it.

There's a lot of dorks, and animosity. And blocking going on.

Content posted here will not reach a number of instances. Some are irrelevant, others are less so.

Reason why I have changed my publishing account location elsewhere.

This will NOT be cleared anytime soon. Last one I tried (and I am good at diplomacy) costed my my account at that server.

@mathlover No, you won't find it.

Opal has this info about it :

>> cybre.space instance blocklist restricted to logged-in users

on this page, recommended reading : wowana.me/fediverse.xht

@rgx@nerdica.net Sadly I just had to Delete/redraft one of my posts in this thread, as there was disgusting content posted down bellow -- by a troll whose account has been deleted but the posts are still around.

We had a good reply which is now orphaned -- but can be seen here : pleroma.freespeech.host/object

Thank you to the Shebang!, the author and my apology for this action, sadly it was needed.

* Have you ever heard about Friendica ? *

Friendica is interesting; I have an account but used it very little. Should to a more in-depth test and report on it.

Friendica is part of the vast Fediverse Network -- mastodon is the largest group, but not all of it.

friendi.ca for general information.

Screenshots: friendi.ca/about/screenshots/

Definitely has some nice features :

- enhanced text formatting, with GUI controls on editor.
- Edit, anytime you want, any of your old posts.
- images can be attached to all posts.

** Get to Know it? -- there's a Try instance. tryfriendica.de/

Accounts there will auto-delete in one week, so you don't waste any space or resources. Like it? get a real instance account. Don't like it? just forget it and it goes away soon.

And it federates easily - - my account there is @rgx@nerdica.net
Nerdica is a nice node on the Friendica network.

Lots more instances listed - here : dir.friendica.social/servers
