ChatGPT stuff
I asked #ChatGPT “What is the secret to make Julia code fast?” (just to see if it picks up anything from Jakob Nissen’s excellent guide https://viralinstruction.com/posts/optimise/ or the many other #julialang optimization guides online).
The answer turned out to be good example of the model’s ability to be subtly misleading while not being entirely wrong.
(Thread, with ChatGPT’s reply as the next post.)
Todo.txt with the Vim plugin gives me most of these except for the first two.
+Projects don’t really do the job for me with regard to subtasks, not nearly flexible enough.
Someone recommended TaskWarrior, but it looks like that doesn’t have subtasks either?
Have been thinking about extending the Todo.txt format in some way to support subtasks, not sure yet what the best way to go about it is. Sometimes I also want the subtasks to be strictly ordered (“show me only the next available subtask in order, not all of them”), sometimes they’re fine unordered. Hmmm…
Thinking out loud:
What I like the most about the #fediverse is the randomness in the
social interactions among the people from different instances and the diverse niche content you find.

That’s exactly what gives it the feel of the early Internet. There’s a sense of serendipity to it, and it actually lets you feel how wide and diverse the world is!
None that were at an “omg this changes everything” level (though the Sixels one could be that when the project is more mature).
But I liked David Kunz’s talk a lot, and the #Lua primer was pretty useful.
“The philosophy of vim” was nice in a nostalgic way, about the way computing starts to feel different when using #FOSS tools, and gives a feel of ownership over your software.
(I watched from David Kunz’s talk upto the Sixels one.)
There’s always the sense of “something profound is being revealed” even if you don’t actually believe that the readings have some kind of mystical origin.
I don’t grasp this flow diagram fully though. Does this mean every post of yours goes through Pocket? Or is this only for some bookmarks/things you quote from websites or your feed reader etc.? What does the Toot Bookmarklet do (I haven’t come across it before)?
I think the cross-posting blasphemy mostly bothers people when it’s done in a “set it and forget it” way, where the person doesn’t interact with the platform other than in this automated form. (There are people now who’d take issue with any cross-posting at all, but I don’t think they’re a majority.)
So I'm watching the 1976 "the boy in the plastic bubble" and it got me thinking.. there is a scene where he says hje doesnt take showers and doesnt smell because there are no germs...
So if people who are in sterile tooms all their life are truely germ free... that must mean all sorts of things... no BO, you never smell, do you even need to brush your teeth, you wouldnt get plaque or anything if there are no germs to consume the food on your teeth... Does it also mean they have no gut bacteria..
and aside from all those dise effects, which im curious about... how do you even steralize a human in the first place, even if they are born that way and go in from birth, surely your born with bacteria on you.. how do you steralize a human and if you cant how do they not die from this...
Ah, so this is what it’s called. I have exactly the one they show in the main picture (fingers of the hand), but none other afaik. I remember finding this out sometime when I was in school (I have no idea how or why), and being surprised that the other kids couldn’t do it.

The algorithm is supposed to make sure that two boosts of the same post are at least 40 posts apart in the feed. The idea is that if you miss one of the boosts you should still be able to see the other ones.
But 40 is too small a limit, and it would be best if we could customize it (including just not showing it multiple times at all, like you said).

Hi! I want to boost this because I agree very much with the content, but unfortunately it doesn’t have a text description for the image, so it isn’t accessibility-friendly.
Could you please make sure to add those the next time you post an image, so it’s screen reader friendly and more accessible?

I am and I do. It sometimes helps me not get overwhelmed (by focusing on the podcast instead of messy IRL stuff), and sometimes it contributes to the overwhelm (when I get too into it and don’t give myself time to process things).

It depends on the individual and how they see things (i.e. what kinda support they derive from it), but I can give my perspective: a lot of the value of such objects for me is the fact that they’re constant parts of the class that I’ve already seen and mapped out in my brain. So they’re mentally a comfortable place to retreat to.
Practically, that means that - at least from the students’ perspective, i.e. around the time she’s there in the room - this additional boom box or whatever object should also be a constant in the room. That’ll help the chances of it being beneficial to them.
