Trip to Strasbourg with my parents. A French city historically under German rule with a unique culture and architecture. Unfortunately COVID rules are so restrictive it kind of kills the joy of travelling a little bit.

@freemo
If more people cared about intellectual freedom as much as librarians do, the world would be better for it.

I love librarians and readers in general. They arent necessarily brilliant mathematicians or revolutionary historians. But they love to learn and evolve and grow and imagine. There arent enough people like that and i love being around them.

@posrev yea i dont mean it in the literal sense. I mean wackadoos, flat earthers, people who think covid has never been isolated and viruses arent real, the obvious crazies.

@posrev cool, so you had nothing of value to add relevany to the post, just saw the word science and wanted to whine, got it.

@johnabs
If im saying it you can usually assume some degree of sarcasm ;)

@johnabs
Its intended to be comedic by overexagerating the way your stereo typical american acts, thinking they are the only ones with freedom is a common trope.

@pthenq1

I entirely agree, but because they are not i left that out intentionally.

Primary and secondary school are the only ones in the state that is paid for publicly. So no I wouldnt call that cherry picking, they were singled out for good reason. Now if we made university free for everyone too, as we should, then id be happy to include that. Otherwise no, especially in the context of this comic.

@valleyforge
Not even close. Per capita we are 32nd in our spending on primary education, and also 32nd on secondary, even mexico has us beat

As a percentage of gdp we are even worse in 66th place beaten out by even cuba.

Depends on the situation. What i try not to do is focus on rare fringe examples and instead focus on large trends.

For example i have frequently pointed out the dishonesty of mainstream media, its the norm. I dont point out the fairly rare cases of scientist who were dishonest because it is so rare. Similarly i do point out the wackadoos who think science is corrupt and have whatever nutter theories they have because it is common, particularly on the fedi.

It never ceases to amazes how headstrong conspiracy theorists are when they dont even understand basic terminology.
