I find the majority are quite incapable of navigating truths or reasoning objectively at all. This will work with some, but its a small minority. Even those who are capable dont want the truth, they invested too much into the fantasy to back down now

B is certainly a factor... A not so much, but maybe some. The biggest factor though is poor education and lack of education. Schools and parents do a very poor job at teaching children critical thinking skills and that is really the biggest issue, thry lack the tools to evaluate the nonsense and understand the truth.

Its hard to predict the future largely because the pace of technology varies wildly depending on the state of society. If we had the same momentum we had in the 60s i would say it would be a sure thing. But things have slowed down and at present i expect more of a technological regression rather than progress
@mian

It is truly mind boggling that in a single persons lifetime we went from inventing the first plane and flying for the first time, to being on the moon. Could you imagine being the person who lived for those years and seeing that.

Now we are arguing with people who think covid and viruses in general dont exist and the earth is flat. Might be another few thousand years before we start progressing again.

@twotwenty

I dont think people in power need to seed the wacky ones. The vast majority of people are plenty stupid on their own to come up with that crap honestly.

@CapitalB

The words used here arent too important to me. But i want to point out that while there are many conspiracy theories that have the potential of being true and are reasonable hypothesis the one important quality is that, by virtue of being a hypothesis, is not rooted in evidence and is pure speculation. That alone, even in the more reasonable cases, makes it quite damning when they are asserted as if they are a known fact.

approvals dont really make sense to me, Too much work to verify someone and impossible to tell if someone is legit just based on a sentence or two in the signup form. We used to do approvals and in the end a lot of legit users or users who didnt understand english got rejected meanwhile spam accounts still got through with generic signup messages.

captcha isnt perfect either but I found it to be the better compromise.

Some of my absolute favorite Tolkein quotes:

“A man that flies from his fear may find that he has only taken a short cut to meet it.” -- The Children of Hurin

“If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”

“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” -- The Fellowship of the Ring

“A single dream is more powerful than a thousand realities.”

"Deserves it! I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.” -- The Fellowship of the Ring

“What do you fear, lady?" [Aragorn] asked.
"A cage," [Éowyn] said. "To stay behind bars, until use and old age accept them, and all chance of doing great deeds is gone beyond recall or desire.” -- Return of the King

“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisioned by the enemy, don't we consider it his duty to escape?. . .If we value the freedom of mind and soul, if we're partisans of liberty, then it's our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can!”

“But I have been too deeply hurt, Sam. I tried to save the Shire, and it has been saved, but not for me. It must often be so, Sam, when things are in danger: some one has to give them up, lose them, so that others may keep them.” -- The Return of the King
