@freemo I don't like to brag, but I did take some advanced hip hop dance classes back in the day...

I didn't really know what to expect with Mastodon, but less than 24 hours in, I'm definitely a fan. And, to be honest, I don't think I'll miss the sound of crickets that so often followed a Tweet.

@maxb Ok I think you have some fundmeental misunderstanding about how it works, and I'm happy to help clarify some of that... First can you send me some screenshots of a server that does provide identifying info vs us, I'm not sure what you mean in that regard.

As foir how you login to other mastodon servers through this instance, you dont. What you can do is follow, talk to, share, and interact with people from other servers. You can also view the local timeline of a foreign server here. But you cant "login" to a foreign server from here.

@void

For sure, if you need a private and secure channel, this isnt the place.

@feld

@LouisIngenthron There may be some tools helping it along. But even when the fediverse was much smaller I remember noticing that the number of follows here, and engagement in gneeral, was easily many orders of magnitude higher than twitter.

To give you an idea I've had twitter for two times longer than I had this account. I also cross post all my posts from here to twitter so the two accounts post the exact same content. Despite this I have only 4K followers on twitter and I have almost 30K followers here. On top of that when i post on twitter I very rarely get replies compared to when I post here.

@bpub Im not sure i agree, reaching more of an audience, especially when that audience is knownn good actors isnt a problem at all.

An instance of bad actors or even questionable actors federating with such a server, maybe... but a bunch of people on a server with strict no hate policy who have all proven themselves to be good actors... no i dont see the problem with information about a genocidal server reaching them being an issue.

As for manipulative disinformation, that is all the more important to have access to for a STEM instance or in general because then you have the ability to correct the information. What is ddangerous is allowing that information to exist in a bubble where people hear it day after day and are so isolated no one is there to provide them with the other side.

@PhDMarie ::stares intently:: Impress me! Dance!

We are pretty laid back here. Despite being a server for STEM we dont restrict what you can talk about. Half the time we just geek out, so you are good.

But yea this is nothing new, for years now I always realized that its a lot easier to engage people here than it is on twitter, a LOT.

@void

Well sort of, and to be fair this is a harder problem. But you can say the same, if I DM someone and i feel i am saying something that puts me at risk and requires me to trust that it is private, then dont send the DM to a server whose admin you dont trust.

For the record its no different than email... email is always possible to be accessed by the server admin, so you have to trust not just your local email server but the server you send to.

@feld

@feld Sure there is... there is not foolproof way. But you can judge a person based on their past actions and opinions and decide if you think they are trust worthy. Its what we do every day in life really.

@feld At least you can PICK which felon/person reads your DM here... you dont get a say on twitter.

If a felon is reading your DMs its because you decided you trust that felon.

@PhDMarie I love how you've been here less than a day and only have one top level toot and 16 toots in general (so not massive effort your putting in or anything) and you are already up to 61 followers.

I think this really shows how much easier engagement and getting followers is over here than it is on twitter.

@realcaseyrollins The solution is moot, its already solved over here at QOTO and is trivial to solve otherwise. Its just that admins lack either the money or time to implement it.

On QOTO we use docker swarm, it is designed to auto-scale.. as the load increases more worker nodes spin up automatically and come down.. problem solved. On monolithic servers you just upgrade your server to be big enough to handle the demand.

@shadowsonawall Sounds like a great approach, but even if we could make it random sadly its a bit more complicated to get regulatory approval from that sort of a setup :)

@lucifargundam

I never collected explicit demographics, but as a STEM server we have a much higher population of LGBTQ and women than I would have expected (as sadly STEM can sometimes be male dominated, though im happy to see that changing).

While i cant speak to why there has been an influx of women I can say our large LGBTQ community here does have explicit origins. In the early days there was a bit of a blocking war going on. Long story short LGBTQ were indirectly caught in the cross hairs and QOTO was the only one who looked out for their interests explicitly. This caused a huge LGBTQ exodus over to the QOTO server that remains to this day.

@vanessabrown

A few years ago, my daughter and I started to write an 2600 game based on Twitter and Trump. We never f8nished it, but here are some screens!

@xtaldave Just whenn i thought my life was complete you come with this shit and remind me I will never be whole....

@shadowsonawall Well .. its a bit more complicated than that. So for starters im not sure if thats legal but even if it was that wouldn't necessarily help us.

For starters we would need a lot of billboards since we need to sample in a way that is randomized, so it cant be locked in to any one region.. im not sure the cost of the billboards would be much cheaper.

But even if we could do it we need to sample people who dont KNOW if they have the disease or not. We, afterall, want to identify the disease before someone shows obvious signs of having it, and we want to ensure we are sampling both healthy and sick from the same pool of people randomized in the same way. Billboards would kinda break that and gives us a poor sampling method.

@PhDMarie

Yea its crazy, im currently trying to figure out what our budget plan is for the future and ways to work witth those sorts of costs... it isnt easy.

@shadowsonawall

@jonreed Love it, but the line before last and the first has the wrong meter and it throws it off. May I suggest the following variant:

There once was a man called Musk,
Who hollowed the bird to a husk,
We migrated and flew,
To friends old and new,
And now we are fans of the tusk
