Dear cyanobacteria,
I just want to thank you for all the free oxygen and food you provided when you threw that epic oxygenation party 2.4 billion years ago. Your friend, Mr. binsrc

(Non-scientific) article about indigenous rangers tackling extinction of species and loss of biodiversity in outback Australia.

"A key reason for a scientist to work with Aboriginal people in Australia is to try to see the country through their eyes — makes you a better ecologist as well as a richer person."

Great to see what they are doing.

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

@freemo @adidasJack @CCoinTradingIdeas @TheRealSmij @Froghat When I began studying physics I had difficulty conceptualizing sub-atomic particles as "waves" and "balls" at the same time.
I tried to unify the concepts of ocean wave and soccer ball in many different ways, but it never made much sense. Is it a wave in a sea of balls? Is it waves in the surface of a ball?

It is neither!

The problem was that I was letting myself be guided by my everyday senses, touch and vision. But I had never seen or touched a sub-atomic particle.

Sometimes it's really hard to explain things in terms of others. I don't think I could explain a bed in terms of barks and cake smells.

So how did I do it?

I enhanced my senses. I enhanced my sense with experimentation. The double slit experiment tells us that sub-atomic particles have both, particle and wave properties, so I wrote a list of the properties of a particle in a piece of paper. The experiment and the list together form a new sense, the "empiricist sense". And it is as valid as vision or touch.

Now when I want to think of a soccer ball, I can use the information that my vision and touch senses provide me, that it is round and feels like sewed leather. Or I can use the information provided by the "empiricist sense" and think of it as a half baked electron.

The same thing goes with fields and fluids(or matter in general). Experimentation tells us that fields have certain properties and our everyday senses tell us that fluids have others. It can be really hard or impossible to make sense of fields in terms of fluids. So we use our new "empiricist sense" to see and feel the fields. Think of the field first and of the matter as a "half baked field" or just a crisp on it.

Did we seriously just get our first "vaccines cause autism" post on QOTO... sad day. Lets hope this doesnt become a trend and we keep having real science here.

Pugs with breathing problems due to the results of breeding, and woman with large breasts unable to run pain-free without a bra are the result of effectively the same process.

So why is one immoral and not the other? Why do people vocally discourage people from breeding pugs or other dogs with breeding issues but you'd never hear anyone claim women with large breasts shouldn't have children?

I'm not suggesting anything here myself either way. I'm simply posing the question and would like to hear the reasoning each of you might apply to rationalizing this discongruity.

This was a fun one! Written in Ruby, I decided on treating the board size as infinite by expanding it whenever the first or last row or column has an alive cell.

The entry file is game_of_life.rb in the root directory, and for simplicity, it just runs the "small exploder" pattern instead of taking an argument for initial state.

Someone made a Script out of Donald Trump's handwriting and named it "Tiny Hand". The link also includes a font you can download. This is the funniest thing I heard in a while.

I entirely agree with this message on . HK is a prime example of the need for such rights in civil defense against tyranny.

Should we make a rule that all non-english posts must include a hand written english Translation?

The main reason would be moderation as moderators cant currently read or prevent advertisements in foreign languages.

My Pet Peeve: People who dont understand that "Electoral College" refers to a specific group of people (the electorates) and NOT to the system of voting that governs them.

For example when we talk of the presidential election in america the "Electoral College" does not describe the fact that each state has a set number of votes or the fact that the popular vote may differ from the actual vote. It is instead a term used to refer to refer to the 538 electorates in the USA, people who cast votes for president.

Matter of fact, that charter may give an idea or two you hadn't thought of. Obviously, usenet was a different animal, but still...

@freemo Those are good, thank you.

The only thing I would add is spell out the STEM acronym, as people might have found QOTO simply from it's prominent position on joinmastodon.org's Instance list / Join page - and not realize that this is not a typical, general audience focused server.

Found a nice visual one.

I think with all the non-english posts around here we need to make a few new rules in order to keep things safe for moderation and keeo the timeline interesting. I would like everyones feedback.

1) You must be able to speak english fluently enough to interact with english moderators and english commentors

2) You must have a STEM interest in being here (though not required to post on any one subject).

Also note it is still very hard to moderate non-english posts for now im using a translator but it makes my job MUCH slower...

Would you say these two points apply to you.

@freemo Good morning and thank you for cleaning up!

I had to use the Mute button earlier on, it was too much for me. One line timestamps? Weirdness.

Might be a good time to clarify to people what each of the post privacy settings do?

From blog.joinmastodon.org/2018/07/

Just a reminder everyone. Automated posts such as "playing now" posts **must** be made unlisted. I just had to cleanup a bunch of the public timeline.
