For some time I've been interested in what the world looks like with a different sensorium, so I was curious to know what the world would look like if we could see the polarization of light. To try it out, I bought these glasses and started wearing them: amazon.com/gp/product/B017V9VQ

They are linearly polarized like polarized sunglasses, but the polarization of one eye is 90° off the other. The result is that unpolarized light passes through unmodified, but linearly polarized light shows up differently in each eye, which gives an interesting "shimmer" effect.

Usually the world doesn't look that interesting with them on, TBH. For most of the day, the only polarized light you see is reflections, so your attention is drawn to cars, plastics and other man-made things.

Watching the Land before time (original 1988 version)... why do I do this to myself, already tearing up!

Interesting Fact of the Day (tm):

The priests of the spanish inquisition were strictly opposed to bloodshed of any kind due to the biblical scriptures where Jesus abhors bloodshed.

Now any reasonable person would think this might be contradictory to the torture the priests employed. But if there is one thing we all know, an evil person will find a loophole in everything, even a religious evil person. They determined that torture was perfectly acceptable so long as it didn't shed any literal blood for this reason hanging, the rack, drowning, and many others were perfectly acceptable according to their twisted mentality.

Another little twist was with mutilation, which was forbidden by the church at the time. However the pope in 1256 (Alexander VI I think it was) told inquisitors that despite being a sin they were allowed to absolve each other of sins after each session. Effectively a loop hole allowing them to mutilate their victims during torture.

Climbing the worlds tallest antenna at 1768 feet high... I can not express the levels of anxiety watching this gave me.

When I watch this i keep flipping between two thoughts "what if your hand slips! How many people die doing this"... and "Ok this is really the only big fear I havent conquered, how could i learn to do this".. not that I ever would, it might be too big a fear to get over. But I learned to scuba dive out of a fear of it (partly) and while the first dozen or so dives were very scary after that it wasnt scary at all, now I dive down to where the light doesnt reach and wont bat an eye. I have to wonder, could I maybe learn to overcome a fear of heights the same way? Maybe I should learn to mountain climb...

you seem to be assuming that i'm discussing things in bad faith. maybe things came around wrong because i'm no native speaker?

- i'm sorry that you hate "edgy", but i think it describes certain things very well. that said, as long as _someone_ finds it funny, it's a joke. it may be a bad, tasteless one, but it's a joke.

- shaming people also isn't good. either the topic is important to you, then you have the obligation to try to change the views you don't like _or_ you ignore them. deciding that for someone else isn't the thing to do. secondly, just because the majority thinks i have shitty ideas doesn't mean that the ideas are shitty. it's good if i reflect upon if they are good or shitty, then maybe change my opinion. i won't change my opinion because someone tells me to, it doesn't work that way.

- it might surprise you that i do very well know what the nazis did, we learn rather much about that in school here.
maybe i've expressed myself wrong. i said that hating groups is what nazis do. you shouldn't take offense if i say that hating groups is wrong, look at the history in general.

There's a difference between a restaurant asking a mentally ill person to leave and asking restaurants to remove people you think are mentally ill, especially if you are not a psychiatrist. The latter is closer to what we were talking about. Freemo removing an asshat from Qoto is different from if Freemo asked other server admind to remove said person under threat of block.

> Its so rare in fact that its been the main attractive feature QOTO presents to new users in my expiernce.

it was one of the main reasons i've joined here. i have some years ago created an account at another server but never used it really.

when deciding to really invest some time into the fediverse, i looked at their block list, half of the blocks were because of "free speech". unsurprisingly, unsavory posts about right-wing people or the police were no problem on that instance. while any instance is free to block whomever they want to, it's a shame that so many people fall for the doublethink.

i get why people want a "safe haven" where they don't have to deal with ugly real life shit. a closed web forum might be better than a federated microblogging protocol for that though.

That or that if their audience is ok with seeing it that they must agree with it. Or a bit of both

Seems my tritium is loosing its radioactivity, need to replace it... It was getting hard to find last time too.

Can you really say your free when you cant even buy nuclear/radioactive isotopes cheap and affordably?

Hail to the shrews! 🤪
