My 7 year old son told me he "googled up" the "least fast car in the world" & was bitterly disappointed because he got a page of Porsches & Lamborghinis, etc. Ah-ha, I thought, it's time we have that talk. About search expressions. #LibrarianDad

Just caught up on some fractured shard of the Wil Wheaton story.

- 60 reports/day are enough to overwhelm a volunteer admin
- dogpiling can be effective even when coped with by paid staff, historical tracking & analysis, carefully-written policies (see birdsite gamergaters & terfs)z
- the dogpile technique is therefore more effective here
- it's just proven its effectiveness against a celebrity target

Expect a lot more of it. 1/2

Hey, what's up! It's time for another

So, I've still got a bit of a sour taste in my mouth regarding the whole situation surrounding @wilw . I think I've made myself clear that sort of bullshittery is extremely upsetting to me.

So, for today, my musical choices are going to be centered around the music of The Mountain Goats.

John Darnielle is the creative push behind The Mountain Goats, a singer-songwriter who puts a lot of thought and feeling into his music. A lot of it seems to be wrapped up in the events surrounding his personal life experiences.

Some of his songs certainly tell of pain and angst. I've collected a few below:

Harlem Roulette: youtu.be/Nzv7oiKqOvU

This Year:

Love Love Love:

Psalms 40:2 :
youtu.be/O7YQR27lykA

Deuteronomy 2:10 :

Anyways, The Mountain Goats is one of my favorite bands, and I really hope you guys explore their catalog .

Bonus Track from a concept album about Cannibalism on the Moon: youtu.be/32JY36azImo

Oh and stop it with the self-congratulatory circle jerk where you keep patting each other on the backs for fending off the bogeyman

And yes I did notice he wrote “CIS” in all caps and I’m sure some of y’all are ready to use that as further evidence he’s a transphobe or whatever, but I’m not going to hold it against him for making a common mistake in this context

I just got an official response from mastodon.social over someone from bofa trying to get us silenced for being free speech oriented.

I got an official response from the moderators over there and told will NOT be silenced. They did not find any justification for the report.

@arteteco @absolutus

When something goes wrong in a place that shares your basic views on what's wrong with the world... somehow makes it feel less bad.

The hounding of Wil Wheaton off here bothers me greatly. Suggests the admins of Mastodon instances can’t be trusted to do the right thing vs the easy thing (which I don’t blame them for entirely) and highlights a fundamental problem of social media. That the ill informed baying crowd gets what they want is simply not good enough.

So just decided to rewrite my MUD :d20: from scratch and write it in Ruby :ruby: with ncurses this time for fun. It will be open-source :opensource:

Hi, Folks!

I am a tenured Associate Professor at La Salle University in Philadelphia, PA, USA. I have my B.S. Degree with a Double Major in Chemistry and Physics and my Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry with specialties in Ultrafast Laser Spectroscopy, Instrument Design, and Automation Software Development. I teach in an interdisciplinary undergraduate program called Integrated Science, Business, and Technology in which our students study the process of developing scientific discoveries into new products and services using collaborative business practices. I develop and teach courses in Energy, Materials, and Informatics, and have personal research interests in Robotics and Machine Intelligence.

After joining Facebook as soon as La Salle was added to the Facebook servers in 2005 and Joining Twitter in 2007, I created the Facebook and Twitter accounts for the University as I was unable to convince our IT department that it was important for the University to have a presence on social media.

After openly sharing my personal Political positions as a Constitutional Conservative and my support of Donald Trump, the backlash on Facebook and Twitter was so severe that I no longer use those networks.

As a Conservative Academic, I understand and deeply experience what it means to be a minority. I'm giving Mastadon a spin in search of respectful conversation.

Being a programmer is just an endless struggle to go from the guy being told to RTFM to being the guy to tell others to RTFM.

for 30/08/2018:

If you could ask one real life figure (living or dead) any question who would choose and what would you ask them?

I think this highlights a need for anti-abuse measures in the abuse report tools. Admins should be able to turn off reports from certain servers/users and about specific users on their servers, since as it stands, clearly abuse reports can be leveraged as an effective tool for abuse.

Thoughts about the fediverse

I haven't gone browsing on the fed timeline too much lately so I haven't really encountered all that much annoying/offensive material.

So far the local timeline + some news bots are keeping me engaged enough to get what I want outside of the people I'm directly following.

Added about 40 more emoji just now. If your on then refresh your browser and check them out!

If we only tolerate those we agree agree with, I'm not sure that's tolerance.

Our audiovisual selection for a compact image flow is this:
· Raw developing - Darktable
· Image processing - Gimp
· Image analisys - Fiji
· Video edition - Kdenlive

From high def to low def. With that software you can do whatever you want.

From the idea to the action.
