Extreme weather conditions could lead to disruption in regional food supplies, says an IPCC report published in August 2018.

> It is projected that for every degree of global warming, the world's yield of wheat will fall six per cent, corn by 7.4 per cent, and rice and soybeans both by a little more than three per cent each. Together those four crops account for two-thirds of the calories consumed by people, and with the population growing by 80 million people each year on average, the world needs to produce more food, not less.

> Cynthia Rosenzweig, a senior research scientist at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City and one of the coordinating lead authors of the IPCC report, said much of the world relies on trade to access food, which increases global vulnerability if food production is affected across several regions at the same time.

I generally respect people's pronouns if they are reasonable (they, he, she, doesn't matter). But of course I expect the same respect in return, especially from liberals who support the movement. Therefore I am defining my own pronouns as well:

My pronouns: Sir / Mister

It's amazing, since I declared my pronouns not a single liberal has actually respected them. Go figure.

I 100% agree with this. But I also agree that we need secured borders particularly if we want to provide welfare for those in need. Since i support strong welfare also it means I must, logically, support strong borders.

Also my goodness the increased character limit is satisfying. Thanks @freemo

Thanks for hosting @freemo.

I'm going to use this account for keeping track of my learning, to complement the theme of qoto.org. Hopefully with that usage it might even be my Mastodon main.

Gonna start my first post with this article I came across on Quora, despite my slight distaste of the monetisation the platform has tread towards:

medium.com/better-marketing/ho

The article is suggesting the use of handwriting a particular lesson 100 times, before experimenting and learning from it.

I was born and raised in Hong Kong until 15. The way we learn Chinese (a language evolved from pictures, so instead of memorising 26 alphabets that you string together, you memorise >1k different shapes) was largely rote learning - recite a chapter until you can do it from memory, handwrite a chapter 100 times. If you were naughty at school, handwrite a chapter 100 times more.

Sounds daunting and ineffective in Western standards, and I didn't like it, but it did have its merit. Even more so if you care about what you are learning.

The article used copywriting as an example of the learning subject. Since I'm learning programming, I wonder how I'm gonna do this - handwrite code 100 times? Handwrite explanation of algorithms 100 times? I do love handwriting so any excuse to get my pen flowing is a good excuse.

@freemo
I might sign up an alt as my technology learner persona. Thanks for maintaining this awesome instance.

@freemo and due to groups like south silly where if you did not 100% agree with the group think we are here. All of the facebook groups i am in are now private or secret for this same reason. There would not be a need for a new platform if there was no toxic culture on the others. we are smart enough to not engage anymore . imagine being a broken young person trying to navigate that?

@freemo its such a bad environment if your mental health isnt up to snuff. its also an easy slide into one of many extremist groups on both the left and the right. hurt people hurt people

Working on the gerrymanding game for . Here's a first draft of Delaware.

@freemo thanks bud. Im looking foreward to well thought out conversations ! this is exciting

@Liberty4Masses The biggest threat America faces is extremism & a lack of respectful discourse. Both act together to prevent us from solving the problems we all face. As important as gun rights are, being able to have respectful dialog again as a nation is far far more critical.

If you haven't checked out yet you should probably check out qoto.org and get an account. We have thousands of people on the local server most with extensive STEM backgrounds. It's an active server. But best part is that its not only distributed and decentralized but we also offer a ton of other distributed and compatible services.

Some of the other services we offer for free:

- Host your own website on your own domain with us for free.

- Get a free unlimited GitLab account to host any files or source code you want to share.

- Get a free NextCloud account, also hosted on QOTO. Its like google drive just with actual privacy.

- Many other features coming up this week including: A discourse server to host discussions, Photo hosting, Video hosting, and music hosting. All for free, and all using decentralized and federated technologies.

update, we now offer free web-hosting as part of the QOTO network of services. You dont even need to be a member of our MAstodon server (where I am making this post) to use it!

Our Gitlab instance is free for everyone to use for public and open-source projects. We recently enabled the Pages feature. This allows you to upload and host web sites directly from Gitlab. You can even bring your own custom domain, but if you dont have one you will be given a free URL to your page anyway.

As the first pilot test I moved my project over to the gitlab server. It is now hosting the following website: Aparapi.com

Please reach out to me if you'd like to use the service and have any questions.

Man these Deep Fakes just keep getting better and better. This time Full House but everyone is Ron Swanson from the Office!

A update for all those using our NextCloud or GitLab services (free for anyone hosting open-source projects). We recently figured out why most of you have had trouble uploading large files to NextCloud or using the CI on GitLab. Turns out our Nginx reverse proxy had a 10M limit on file size.

The issue has since been fixed. If anyone has any continued problems let me know.

@snder Neither exactly. All the qoto services I engineered my own AWS pipelines for.

We use ECS with some custom hacks that bring down cost as well as make it portable to other non-aws servers.

Basically i use a nginx reverse proxy container along with a companion container that automates load balaning and SSL certificates. The way it works is whenever i add any container of any kind to the cluster I simply set two environment variables telling it the domain name it will be hosted on and whihc port it exposes the web server on. At that point the load balancing container automatically detects the new docker container, reads the variables, and creates a new reverse proxy link. It then automatically goes and obtains/applies a new SSL certificate from lets encrypt and applies it to the reverse proxy link.

So basically to get gitlab to work i just brought up a container with the proper settings and everything magically worked, just like my other services.
