#QOTO Update. We now have a PeerTube instance up free to all QOTO users to use. The new server can be found here: https://video.qoto.org
This server is in addition to several other servers we brought up in recent weeks, all are open to users of QOTO:
NextCloud: https://cloud.qoto.org
Gitlab (allows to host private domains as well as several free CI runners): https://git.qoto.org
Discourse: https://discourse.qoto.org
And of course there is QOTO mastodon at https://qoto.org
Later next week we will probably get FunkWhale server up and PixelFed. We will continue to be a home for Federated and Distributed social technologies that enable STEM projects to collaborate and publish their results.
I just finished a first draft of my Protowaffle Datasheet (electronics prototyping board for surface mount). I could really use any feedback before I go live with this.

It's official! The #Philippines will now have its own Space Agency and Space Development and Utilisation policy! Mabuhay!
Republic Act 11363 or The Philippine Space Act has been officially signed by President Rodrigo Duterte on August 8, 2019! RA 11363 now officially establishes both the Philippine Space Agency and the Philippine Space Development and Utilization Policy. This landmark law is unique since it creates both Agency and Policy at the same time!
Congrats Dr. Rogel Mari Sese!

The truth is the statistics aren't usually wrong. But more often than not people draw the exact opposite conclusion than they should from statistics because they aren't trained int he fallacies. We see this in almost every area of politics and it the central reason that democracy based politics fail, because people are really shitty at creating actionable solutions from data, even when that data seems clear.
#QOTO update:
We recently added a new service to the QOTO family of services. We now host a Discourse server are https://discourse.qoto.org
It is currently empty but will act as a space for discussion around open-source STEM projects or general STEM discussion. It will also act as a mailing list for any project managers who wish to use the service for their projects.
IT compliments our other services well including a GitLab instance open to the general public for open-source STEM projects as well as for our users to host private or personal websites.
We also have a NextCloud server open to the public for open-source STEM projects and individuals to utilize as well.
In the next few weeks we will continue to bring up new services including PeerTube, Pixelfed, FunkWhale, and many more on their way.
Site etiquette indicates my first toot should be by way of an introduction. Seldom comfortable tooting my own horn (pun intended)* I'll keep this brief(ish).
I am a philosopher and historian based in Sydney and currently a doctoral candidate at the #Macquarie Business School; researching Edmund #Burke and his implications for executive leadership.
I chose to undertake my study in a business school, grubby though commercial ends may seem to elevated minds, because Burke was an intensely practical thinker. As he noted:
'‘The End of learning is not knowledge but virtue; as the End of all speculation should be practice of one sort or another… [for] Knowledge is the Culture** of the mind; and he who rested there, would be just as wise as he who should plough his field without any intention of sowing or reaping.'***
In this context, it seems fitting to attempt to apply Burkean research to practical ends.
I am also a passionate advocate for technology reform, which drew me to Mastodon, as I do not think unrestricted access to an individual's data is necessary for the provision of services. #ProtonMail, #Signal, #Threema, #NextCloud, #Mastodon and co. are all demonstrating that FAANG methods are not the only viable way of providing digital connections.
N.B.:
*Thinking intended puns, I am always reminded of the joke about a man who entered a local newspaper's pun contest. He sent in ten different puns, in the hope that at least one of the puns would win. Unfortunately, no pun in ten did.
**Culture in the original sense of ploughing for sowing later.
***Burke, A Note-Book of Edmund Burke, 82-83.
Here we go, a blog for my long form learning journal, with a Mastodon widget!
"A new study has found that not sticking to a regular bedtime and wake-up schedule–and getting different amounts of sleep each night–can put a person at higher risk for obesity, high cholesterol, hypertension, high blood sugar and other metabolic disorders."
https://neurosciencenews.com/sleep-disruptions-metabolism-14174/
@freemo Firstly, I would say that the article directly quotes the authors of the paper in that "this provides some evidence supporting a causal link between irregular sleep and metabolic dysfunction." Second, the article clearly states that the converse hypothesis was not found. That is to say, the sleep duration and bedtimes preceded the development of metabolic dysfunction, not the other way around.
Regardless of if he is innocent or guilty there is NO excuse to confine someone in jail for a year with no trial and no bail. That is a disgusting abuse of due process. Even if found innocent after a year spent in jail he was effectively punished anyway (at least partly).
It amazes me americans can see a person told he will be in jail for a year without trial as the person pleads, their innocence, kills himself, and everyone cheers.
Why can't america see just how beyond lunacy things have gotten on both sides of the political fence?

I managed to learn a lot today without accomplishing anything. Things I've done:
- Setting up Grav as a custom webapp only to realise that the latest Grav requires PHP 7.3.8 which isn't Yunohost's PHP version, as Yunohost follows Debian stretch;
- Setting up Jekyll in Gitlab with a theme I want, but Gitlab CI confused me mid-way;
- Pico CMS as custom webapp in Yunohost was the closest to getting working, but a lot of plugins and themes are outdated;
- Dotclear2 authentication doesn't like Yunohost's LDAP;
I'm really trying not to use WordPress here but I have wasted all day on the above.
I'm also seriously considering ditching Yunohost with how restricted they are with my host.
But for now I've accumulated too much frustration and have to call it a day.
@freemo Nice. Not that I'll block either - I'm just in favour of techniques like this that give users more control over what content they want to see. Played a big role in me choosing this instance in the first place.
#QOTO update.
From now on I will post all official QOTO updates through the @QOTO account. I will reboost all such updates from this account.
This is intended to make it easier for people who either want just announcements but not my normal toots, or people who want to hear my toots and no announcements. Basically if you dont want to hear announcements you can block @QOTO and then you wont see me boosting that account. Or you can unfollow me and follow @QOTO if you just want announcements. Up to you.
After this post that will be my policy moving forward.
Them: Fully automatic guns are illegal.
Me: Ok, I'll just take a dozen of the semi-automatic ones then
