Been writing a simulation of the ising ferromagnetism model in c++ since I realized its been years since I wrote anything in c++ and that's concerning.
Current mood, thankful for modern language features. Going back to c++ has made me feel far more appreciative of rust and its enforcement of safe memory practices. Also, I forgot how ungainly and c++'s feature set is. Its time to stop.
I remembered this epic quote from Good Will Hunting and now I need to watch it again:
You don't know about real loss, 'cause it only occurs when you've loved something more than you love yourself. And I doubt you've ever dared to love anybody that much. And look at you... I don't see an intelligent, confident man... I see a cocky, scared shitless kid. But you're a genius Will. No one denies that. No one could possibly understand the depths of you. But you presume to know everything about me because you saw a painting of mine, and you ripped my fucking life apart.
An explanation of rhe Total Perspective Vortex, by Douglas Adams:
The Universe, as has been observed before, is an unsettlingly big place, a fact which for the sake of a quiet life most people tend to ignore.
Many would happily move to somewhere rather smaller of their own devising, and this is what most beings in fact do.
For instance, in one corner of the Eastern Galactic Arm lies the large forest planet Oglaroon, the entire "intelligent" population of which lives permanently in one fairly small and crowded nut tree. In which tree they are born, live, fall in love, carve tiny speculative articles in the bark on the meaning of life, the futility of death and the importance of birth control, fight a few extremely minor wars, and eventually die strapped to the underside of some of the less accessible outer branches.
In fact the only Oglaroonians who ever leave their tree are those who are hurled out of it for the heinous crime of wondering whether any of the other trees might be capable of supporting life at all, or indeed whether the other trees are anything other than illusions brought on by eating too many Oglanuts.
Exotic though this behaviour may seem, there is no life form in the Galaxy which is not in some way guilty of the same thing, which is why the Total Perspective Vortex is as horrific as it is.
For when you are put into the Vortex you are given just one momentary glimpse of the entire unimaginable infinity of creation, and somewhere in it a tiny little marker, a microscopic dot on a microscopic dot, which says "You are here."
The Total Perspective Vortex derives its picture of the whole Universe on the principle of extrapolated matter analyses.
To explain - since every piece of matter in the Universe is in some way affected by every other piece of matter in the Universe, it is in theory possible to extrapolate the whole of creation - every sun, every planet, their orbits, their composition and their economic and social history from, say, one small piece of fairy cake.
The man who invented the Total Perspective Vortex did so basically in order to annoy his wife.
Trin Tragula - for that was his name - was a dreamer, a thinker, a speculative philosopher or, as his wife would have it, an idiot.
And she would nag him incessantly about the utterly inordinate amount of time he spent staring out into space, or mulling over the mechanics of safety pins, or doing spectrographic analyses of pieces of fairy cake.
"Have some sense of proportion!" she would say, sometimes as often as thirty-eight times in a single day.
And so he built the Total Perspective Vortex - just to show her.
And into one end he plugged the whole of reality as extrapolated from a piece of fairy cake, and into the other end he plugged his wife: so that when he turned it on she saw in one instant the whole infinity of creation and herself in relation to it.
To Trin Tragula's horror, the shock completely annihilated her brain; but to his satisfaction he realized that he had proved conclusively that if life is going to exist in a Universe of this size, then the one thing it cannot afford to have is a sense of proportion.
#QotoJournal is being launched.
We had a suggestion made and considered, and a discussion thread posted at our Discourse Forums - see : https://discourse.qoto.org/t/special-hashtag-to-highlight-serious-posting-at-qoto-org/180
The idea is to have a default hash tag that can identify more serious posting, articles, blog pages, etc being produced by members of our instance.
The discussion has been opened for two weeks, and I feel it's time to launch - so here it goes, we are adopting this as our tag.
* For the tag, the text case doesn't matter -- QOTOJournal, or QotoJournal will give the same results.
Will prepare a separate post later with suggestions and guidelines for posting content, to create a bit of a Style we can identify at a glance.
Thank you to my friend who sent this idea, and to all who supported it, participating in previous discussions here in the Local feed or at the forum post.
My thoughts on the matter were disclosed also on my blog at : https://write.tedomum.net/rgx/special-hashtag-to-highlight-serious-posting
** This post was edited via "Delete/ReDraft" to incorporate a suggestion of using QotoJournal -- without underscore, as it seems a good idea.
Scene from Futurama @realcaseyrollins
This one is to convince @realcaseyrollins to finish watching Futurama.
"I will not sacrifice the [STEM]. We've made too many compromises already, too many retreats. They invade our space, and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds, and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far, no farther!"
@retiredguru@social.linux.pizza @freemo I would suggest not basing the wording on who they are but rather how they behave in qoto. Just like accounts that are primarily aimed at advertising goods and services, account that are primarily aimed at spreading nonsensical claims on nature of things with no basis in any scientific theory could be disallowed.
If someone is a "flat earther" or an "icosahedron mooner" or whatever, but refrains from spamming their beliefs in qoto, and otherwise engages in meaningful conversations/interactions I see no reason to force them to leave.
On the other hand if someone is a professor in some respected university, but decides to troll qoto with bogus theories just to demonstrate their superior knowledge and debate skills, there is no reason to let them stay.
TL;DR Allowing editing without deleting in mastodon would be a significant benefit to the blind and sight-impaired community.
Thanks to @n0btc bringing it to my attention I have tried to be more mindful of captioning my photos. It seems an important effort that only works well if we all try and do it and be considerate. I absolutely support this.
The problem is I have decades of not doing this and posting memes is very much automatic at times. I see something funny and I post it a few seconds later with my own 2 or 3 word blurb. Problem is I often forget to caption the photos.
Now you can argue I can just do delete&redraft, and this is true, in fact if I catch my error before the post has any activity this is what I do. But I find most of the time it is hours later or even days I forget. So its far too late to do that without loosing all the boosts and orphaning any comments. Not to mention it would annoy the whole fediverse to see the same meme or photo pop up in their feed twice, hours apart. People have even contacted me about that complaining because they see it as repost spamming not realizing it is a edit.
The solution I use is to just add a comment with the picture description when I realize. But I'd imagine this is very inconvenient for the blind & sight-imparied as they would have to look through the comments before they even know if there is a description or not.
This is why being able to edit-in place would be a huge help to them, we can add technical corrections we simply wouldnt otherwise add. The easiest solution I could think of is to keep a revision history and otherwise allow it.
Anyway, hope @gargron considers this as a feature soon.
We recently had a flat-earther. I was tolerant of this up until the point he got aggressive in private messages when asked about if he is a STEM student or professional. So the situation mostly resolved itself, he is no longer with us.
With that said how should we handle people who are otherwise respectful but post almost 100% flat-earth content (basically people who are explicitly anti-STEM)?
How the Liberal Left created the Conservative Right and extremism in the fediverse:
As someone who cares greatly about equality, and recognizes minorities and underprivileged groups deal with some unique and difficult struggles I realize the title to this post would seem a bit inflammatory. But that is not my intention, my intention is to address a very real problem.
As anyone on the fediverse knows there are generally two major groups of instances. Those that wont ban anything of any kind, no rules it's the wild west (red instances). Then there are those that ban anyone who shares any opinion that disagrees with their politics, even if you criticise both the left and the right in the same breath you will likely quickly find the instance or yourself banned.
However the unfortunate consequence of this pattern of behavior is to promote ever increasing support for red instances and to drive grey instances (instances that take a middle ground) into being red instances. Should be obvious why...
You basically have a spectrum of behavior with red on one side and blue on the other. With everyone crammed into the 0.1% of either end of this spectrum that means most new instances will start off, most likely, somewhere in the grey area, even if their just marginally shy of being red or blue in its full extreme.
The experience for an admin of such an instance is to quickly be overwhelmed with people from blue instances blocking and banning for things like criticising a democratic politician or something rather minor. By the end of the first few months a blue/left leaning instance will quickly find itself on dozens of suspend or ban instances as a result and find they only have a voice among the 99% red instances and the 1% grey instances out there.
Since this means they naturally wont have a voice among blue instances, and most people are on social media because they want to be social, this means their only incentive is to appeal to red instances (since that's where all their boosts and likes come from). Along with building animosity for how blue instances treat them and with the acceptance of red instances you will find all the incentive for the instances to move to be an extremist red instance with extremist no-rule policies quickly develop.
As such we see exactly what we are seeing now on the fediverse, an ever increasing number of red instances very quickly overwhelming and overtaking the blue instances.
Of course this is made worse by the fact that those ont he blue instances can only see other blue instances. so they will be under the mistaken impression that the red instances don't exist and that the blue instances are thriving and growing and dominating over the red instances. This ignorance just ensures the red instances grow unchecked and unchallenged.
As someone who's personal policy is anti-extremism, and with this pattern being one that generates extremism it is very VERY concerning to me.
