This post has now hit the #1 spot on hacker news with over 500 comments
Just FYI I posted about this on my own feed and the post seems to be taking off at approaching 200 reboosts here, and I cross-post to twitter and its starting to take off there too even though the account there isnt too active.
I have a few friends in google I'm tempted to ping though I doubt they would be able to know or do anything. I am also tempted on passing this along to some of my tech reporter friends see if they want to pick up the story.
Just woke up and noticed my post got 176 reboosts, and a shit ton of comments and apparently the boosts are still pouring in. I'm glad to see people are as concerned about this as I am.
Holy crap, google is apparently taking down all/most fediverse apps from google play on the grounds that that some servers in the fediverse engage in hate speech. At least three apps I know of anyway and I'd imagine the others will follow soon under the exact same reasoning.} Seems to be the case with Husky, Fedilab, and "subway" tooter.
this is a scary precedent if google play is going to ban any apps that can in any way be used to access content with hate speech. So what about a forum client, do they take that down just because there is a forum somewhere on the internet posting hate speech?
This is particularly worrisome because for most people Google Play is the only way they understand to install apps at all.

@valleyforge @freemo @realcaseyrollins @realcaseyrollins If I did panic and shoot him 7 times in the back before he grabbed an alleged knife, then I should be held responsible for that. Don’t pick up a gun if you can’t handle being in danger without shooting wildly.
@freemo Yup. Google's starting assumption is that the app and the service are controlled by the same organisation (and this is actually a valid assumption in most proprietary, and even several FOSS, apps). So consequently they can punish you for mismanagement of your service by interdicting your app. Now we come along with our federated peg and it doesn't fit neatly into their hole for siloed apps, and their assumption breaks down.
@freemo just wait until they hear about the internet and what you can say in a phone call or send in a messaging app.

I was notified that @tateisu's Mastodon app "Subway Tooter" has received a warning from the Google Play Store citing user-generated content that "incites discrimination".
A Mastodon app does not host or promote any content. The user types the address to connect to. The responsibility of moderating resides with that server. So unless Google is going to drop Chrome, Firefox and Opera from its platform, this is completely out of line.

I am watching this show for the first time and I'm really REALLY impressed with the scientific accuracy in ever minor details. This is an excellent quote from the show and it is also scientifically accurate from experiments we have done on mice. I have never seen a show so mindful of the science before yet still be futuristic science fiction. Really cool!
Unpopular Opinion:
Saying someone is X years young is just a way of saying they are so old and decrepit you feel like you are insulting them by even uttering their age without trying to offset this by saying young instead of old.
The day people start referring to my age in this way is the day I know im an old geezer.
