Why is SELF-HOSTING EMAIL AND SPAM such a problem?

INCREMENTAL WAY

How about setting up white-list almost exclusively instead of spam protection and clever filtering?

(so no need for spam protection if only expecting what you add as 'ok' on incoming whitelist...)

- just people you know are added manually to list as you start emailing them and adding-as-you-go
- and never expecting email from anywhere else

+ even a temporary 'Allow All' switch if really needed and for subscribing / registering to places online...

and then switch back to 'Block All but Whitelist' (or equivalent option) when done

What do you think ?

(especially as a 2nd more-private account could be easier rather than filtering etc!)

It's a chain of lots of things, so better get learning it all (in small AND ALSO bigger chunks)

b) not a skill everyone has

And even if you have the skill of summarising (which I don't think everyone has) telling people in short can feel rude, out of context, or abrupt, misleading, disrespecting more things in that actual process

Usually the main thing is realising who you audience is and what it's for but almost ONLY of it's under tight control conditions but otherwise the whole of the Fediverse means it's also more upto those readers who enter the realm of blogging to see / speak with some people to see if they are a 'good egg' and go from there rather than expect something PERFECTLY short or emotionally clear as crystal !

We're humans remember (unless you're culturally machine-like like Germans or parts of STEM mentality that actually cut out human parts <--- partial joke about Germans but many culture or engineering processes or languages don't care about nature or people)

TL;DR short descriptions I think are very often possible and worthy to try and add but is a mini-art in itself risking it with the assuming skill of writer and if writer can categorise it well (this post could fit a few things)

Writing I guess should always be explored or not taken at face value for those that would like to write and explore things themselves) so 'writing' in itself doesn't match TL;DR which is 'shorter writing' (it's almost opposite to writing unless it's a status update or functional "I'm out to the shops - be back in 20mins"

Short descriptions need thinking what light to write it in...

This brings us to the next main point that LIFE is a communal / shared thing - it's not just my view (even my view is made from yours and 1000's of others, and if suffering etc is also constant naturally and less-naturally as humans then it's collective view and concept not just me detached from environment or me detached from you even! <---in a roundabout way )

Usually facts or mechanical ways are preferred in TL;DR versions but this doesn't suit a lot of life!

So if it's a life thing (full of chains / domino effects) or emotional things.. then what do short descriptions expect? To reduce the emotions or write generically for everything 'emotional feelings about xyz' ? (ok that actually seems to work but then you would still have to read more !

So TL;DR for many parts of human life becomes just another title for what the post title or intro would be anyway... probably

I like that the short version 'forces' me to right key parts but still it's like saying this post is about "hitting bat with ball" but needs lots of description and additional video to explain that process or which bat and which ball, the side-effects (spin / trajectory etc) and for humans that's emotions and internal stuff, not technology external stuff.

I wish Mastodon had a 'Show more' option (like the CW / Content Warning does) but so far no luck on that... even though it would be exactly same as CW just without the status of CW... showing a show more button... technology also encourages good practice sometimes even if box below the button could lead to more details.

Emotions are not short, and therefore forcing TL;DR modes is like cramming human thought through thin mechanical tubes, instead of more appropriate therapy like sessions where you get to the bottom and answer why a human gave such output at the beginning or expression (by going through the HUMAN layers and also helping people see what they mean too)

TL;DR for it's inappropriate usage (more-human things) is simply cutting out this process or expecting people to do all the humanity work (which itself is listening and responding - or harmonising). Machines are the one's with 'perfect' protocols so as humans one must assume more time and less skill in various ways.

The "Too Long Didn't Read" award goes to Richard Stallman for:

- Time killing
He would read what would be enough from my side and then ask "Can you write that in 10 sentences or less..." when it was said in many ways he could summarise instead of asking for more text he couldn't handle lol)

- Illogical Repetition
Even in less than 10 sentences he did not answer many things which would seem very similar / aligned. That was measurably strange / illogical for me.

- Spent time writing many emails to me but seemed that was mostly it (felt like he was waiting or not sure but never said)

- For not jumping out of text and into audio chat or another way to alleviate limits of text (which I believe many in technology don't even see the point of... like 'why to talk?' or 'forget being human just text only'

- Didn't see it saves time to talk or even try it.

So for unsaid reasons...despite answering whatever else he wanted to answer in my previous emails... I declare a lot of TL;DR here and possible selfishness (though there may be another 2022 winner hold tight!) and again I wasn't expecting much but the fact someone doesn't say fuck off is also an indicator

- Saying himself he doesn't know how to deal with many emails
(*despite my solution* of just audio chatting for 10/20mins instead of 10's of emails at least with me which killed time on both our side. I gave him Jitsi link to audio chat (or BigBlueButton would be ok) but no bueno and no answer why not to try.

- Mr. Stallman didn't even say why not for many things or even accept it would save time of 1 chat instead of 10's of emails incoming and outgoing (reading and writing etc) ^_^

I have to admit there is a heart in the picture because:
- He did reply
.. but there was *some* *very selective logic* and you probably assume any hero's or fame is sure to overwhelm people

BUT when we solve the email problem (which for me is audio chat) then progress can be made).

I told Mr. Stallman on a lack of will or trust basis I felt I had to withdraw.

Overall very fast to respond but was a bit avoidant at many DIRECT questions I even repeated simply in 1 line and asked politely !

(I wouldn't care if he would say a bit about why not or even no or something but would continue as if I didn't write - and that's a sure TL;DR person)

Nice guy - can't do his emails (as most can't) and can't jump into audio chat after 10+ short AND long emails.

Gotta learn to change weapon sir Stallman of the Good-Guys.

What is TL;DR - A Series of Habits

e.g. Long Text Obfuscation
(deliberate use as a weapon or trick against others to build walls / rules / punishment programs using layers of text / paperwork as a buffers from the bullies / abusers who would like to distance themselves from their targets and keep hands clean using middle-men enforcers)

e.g. Legal Construct / Legalese /
(same as above but used against people by demanding more time and intelligence to understand AND/OR requirement to use expensive lawyers who always swear allegiance to the 'Court' or authority they are a member of + often also play an inside game / collude internally / can be bought)

e.g. Complicated Computer Code (a mix between user and developers code to lock others out - not always intentional but can end up being 'for the people' but unusable 'by the people')

All the above have a mixture of...

a) natural complication in understanding / transferring any theory or practical, which can naturally reduce tolerance or add a higher boundary to jump in any understanding but helps *when readers continue even if they don't know why it's useful* and seeing how believing it's worth reading actually can get them there in the end... (like teenager that doesn't want to start anything and then suddenly is all in to it and doesn't want your help any more).

b) deliberate layering to hide / nest intentions and trick people / make it more demanding / exhaust people effectively weaponising it against people from those creating and those unable to effect or have a say.

(which still doesn't mean it's ok to not to read or not to at least acknowledge a problem / deliberate tactic because it needs dealing with / incrementing in life and *NOT* ABONDONING*)

Depends where you are - more luck to you.... with err fridges which yeh more useful than one seems (in the right hands as always)...

Also do you mean people take the stuff out where it stood originally like getting heir screwdriver out etc and then you come to it and realise the pump you wanted is gone?

For impossible things I suggest you give it more chance more often, as usually it's your perception that underestimates things and not the reality because you assume it isn't achievable or don't stick with it...

even in the extreme things which I would normally exclude it would still make sense to contact more people or leave a note on your profile is much better than 0 signal to people...

...then it just might happen or it might come to you (a person or opportunity) and at the least increments closer to it happening! Like putting more signs in more places or putting a sticker on your bag or badge on your clothing!

In other words:
- Giving 0 chance doesn't increase chances

- Casually you can increase chances (not over trying either)

- <0 chance is saying "no it can't happen" to yourself, and that "no point" even in the preparing of the thought you cut it off (making sure it won't happen)

Give it a bit more chance and a bit more often like 1% more! Then finally do it once you see how a domino or cascading waterfall effect works!

Most people's perception is wrong and underestimating the effects of trying inside a colony of ants which has unknown domino chain effects multiple reaction person to person long-way short-way logic illogical - ways - around stuff!
