@pluralistic Is one of my favorite authors, and has a Humble Bundle going on right now to support The @eff

(If you're into the politics of #foss I recommend "Walkaway"!)

@WoodooProd So much simpler and handy for the future...

Do you have any sounds / material I can work with / Creative Commons style ?

@WoodooProd Have to admit it doesn't sound that long ago and much easier to see stuff again (which is kinda good)...
What's more shocking is when there is a meme that says "This is what you think mario is 20yrs ago" and shows you a newer mario from 20yrs ago!! haha :-)

"I love old displays, the majesty of a monochrome phospor screen"

Seen on a BBS message..
It's almost poetry :0)
haha

#bbs #telnet #oldcomputers #retrocomputing #vintagecomputing #computers #history

@WoodooProd FTP is by far the best! Could you (in theory) password protect certain directories or for public access (and change passwords once in a while)?

I plugged a USB key into the Internet Box, formatted it, set up an FTP, and now I can send/receive stuff from all the machines with just a terminal/command line.

I love this old fashion method! :0)
And I save miles and time. :0))

#simplicity #efficiency #usb #ftp #server #internetbox #localhost #lan #files #share #terminal #commandline #internetbox #linux #msdos

@WoodooProd PLEASE add a alternative link to your post - If you don't mind

pol1.iv.ggtyler.dev/watch?v=ac

Same page by pre-blocks adverts and tracking from Mastodon... and you can still have original link no worries.

(feel free to re-edit or re-draft also and also add these links for the next links...)

@Lemmus Keywords sunshine, keywords ! 😃 Glad you found it...

@ele I think the quote is excellent and worthy of Tetris or Blockbuster-like bricks so you might see that on my timeline soon !
By the way favourite this just so I know you saw it thanks.

Travel was by walking, riding a horse or by boat.

9 reasons not to have children
By phil rooksby on January 13, 2025

🔴 1) they are the sole reason why this planet is currently experiencing climate meltdown.

Quite simply there are far too many of us to be sustainable.

More on that below.

🔴 2) more children means higher taxes (including the community charge) to pay for all the services they will use.

🔴 3) everyone will have to wait (even) longer to get treated on the NHS. Especially as children get priority.

🔴 4) travel and entertainment will continue to get more expensive, to pay for the concessions given to children.

🔴 5) equality for women will never be achieved, not whilst they are seen primarily as bearers of children.

🔴 6) women who choose to have a child, and it is their choice, face a significantly higher risk of developing health problems (both physical and mental), some of which can be permanent or fatal. As well as placing an extra burden on the already overstretched NHS.

🔴 7) parents (the child-burdened) suffer far more stress and financial problems than those who chose to remain child-free.

🔴 8) each new child will become responsible for yet more torture, death and the extinction of thousands of other species.

🔴 9) each new child will mean more houses, more roads and more physical infrastructures, at the cost of the countryside. At this rate there will be soon be none left.

In conclusion.

🔴 We are currently being bombarded by politicians, by so-called experts and by the media on how best to solve the problems our rapid growth has caused. A multitude of confusing arguments and counter-arguments. Yet most people, deep down, know we have taken the wrong path.

The term sustainable is being used a lot as a solution. But how many people actually know what this really means?

The true definition, as opposed to those being used to sell products or policies, is this:

the maximum number a species can reach before its impact starts to have a detrimental effect on other species.

For us, that number is about one million (worldwide).

Which for most of our existence on this planet we have managed to stay below. It was only when we stopped being nomadic, which was relatively recent, and began living in permanent settlements instead, that we started to grow and then exceed that. Putting pressure on the surrounding ecology so we had to travel further and further to find what we needed.

That rise in numbers was still very slow. It wasn’t until the UK became the industrial workshop of the world that our use of the planet’s natural resources started to speed up exponentially.

To give you some idea how quickly things got out of control, let’s take a look back over the last three hundred years, starting with 1725. A time when the only way to travel was by walking, riding a horse or by boat. The population of the UK then had grown to 7 million.

By 1825, the way were living had changed radically. The rich forcing everyone to leave their rural lives and move to their newly created factory cities. In just 100 years our population grew to 20 million.

In 1925, electricity, cars and air travel had arrived and the number rose to 38 million.

Today, and remember this is in the UK alone - a small island compared to the rest of the world – that number has now increased to 69 million and still growing. Twenty times as many people living here than just 300 years ago.

Add in the rest of the world, and is it any wonder the majority of all the other species have already gone, along with their habitats.

Is it surprising that with each new person born there will be even less food, even less water and even less of all the other essential resources to go round.

NOT HAVING CHILDREN is a no-brainer. We either carry on as we are, believing all will be fine. Or stop behaving selfishly and each do something that will change the world so there is a future to look forward to.

MY COMMENT TO :
Hmm that's good and bad.... maybe more bad because people are jumping from fire into fire constantly instead of long-run preparing...

People prefer talking and working with #machines and not talking to people... sometimes making articles and other stuff about it... but not heading towards the longer real contact...

@Daojoan I dread to even look at the link you add because so many times the hope isn't realised from people who don't reply in depth after such great titles or they do not actually spend time with people themselves despite pointing to the problem, and only write about it (sometimes / it seems).
To go deeper themselves in conversation...? And ACTUALLY build people () with strangers)?...

Who is actually doing that here apart from me?

VIRTUE-SIGNAL-ONLY PEOPLE...
= People virtue signalling but not quite 'doing' something two-way - not really able to do the people work they were talking about HONESTLY - occasionally people hit nail on head only as article or emotional out-burst and then flop at actually investing in people and can't even string deeper messages like a mini-project - hit the point of risk and then bail instead of inching deeper - this evades at the moment and I can provide evidence and names (yes that's how bad / long it's gone for, how many posts and people tried)...

So that's also 'the next level' to after this stage of realising... well done on a good title. I've got 10,000 also.

Daily trying - it's really that bad even with those that might agree with me and respond again in short depth ... So past that 'putting finger on ' I wonder who actually allocates time to talking to people for a long time, you?

Are you going to actually DM me? (without it sounding demanding but just yeah what's the point? Should I visit another link saying what I know already or do this part like a test first? (can this person respond / willingly talk more? Or not?)

No matter what people say... in order to TIME IS NEEDED and TALKING to people is needed on their terms... not just articles or waving flags... but people can't accept the or nature of making friends or building because that involves talking to ' ' or making friends with the worlds which is so stupid and the problem with so many excuses.
Yes strangers and yes you don't even need to know their name - their profile SAYS PLENTY IF YOU LOOKED PAST THE BANNER AND AVATAR.

You're chance here is to answer and continue via DM or even publicly build...

And if you don't really respond I'm not sure why you would post such a thing... There near 0 actual builder of people here,

And 99999999 talking to machines or commenting on this and that bug but not out their own bugs or challenging own (the real work, / is nothing if not those that let them)... usually because it would involve doing less# computer work (which is a lot of why we're in this mess.

Well that's pretty good short version...

People prefer / working on / with and not themselves or others )... or making just articles about it...

You might get some "hoorah!" and "wow yes" responses but it can seem terrible empty after like a where people say a lot but all go home and the door on each other really fast 🚗 〰️ 🌬️

(so this comment is also for others to see others and try / making )

This comment isn't to deter you or others.... isn't perfect but you can it and it with time.
