King III says #civility in #politics is diminishing, & he worries that more lives will be lost unless the nation recommits itself to #nonviolence, as his father preached.

"We believe we have to go into difficult areas, to use our platform, to use our voice to lift up what we believe is #good, #just & #right. And so we're willing to make a sacrifice" to visit #Memphis despite the painful memories it brings, he said.

Restricting Freedom, for the common good?

[It Sucks / I am Disappointed.]

Even if "for the common good" makes a bit of sense - from authoritarian government it's just a big excuse to do whatever a Government wants at the expense of Freedoms.

sucks. @legaltech @politicalscience @law @lawlibrarians

The was created, in the tradition of decentralized protocols, to avoid the likes of FakeBro / BigTechBrother / Meta.

We still need to use Fediverse with less direct links to BigTech sites so they get less revenue from us here clicking links... so it's not YouTube direct links but Redirected links! 🔗 ====> redirect.invidious.io/

CW Disclaimer - Video seems seemingly angry or ranty in presentation (can be seen as angry if you're not able to normalise and just take points) and so can work against reader BUT its for only the content from 38.20m- 41.34m (the rest jumps around topics)

Why I post this is that it's about drugs pushed on people and categorisation of ADHD + Drugs supplied as a business - sold by a system backed by BigPharma etc to people...

And wanted to see what you think as ADD, ADHD, Autism, all seem to be what I / we label people or self-label to say "really fast" or hyper-interested *compared to others* that are perhaps just different in their ability or focus or even slow!

About

Hi there! My name is Craig Maloney. I'm a game designer, interactive storyteller, and a Linux and computer aficionado. I enjoy playing with computers, and have been fortunate to make them not only my hobby, but also part of my work. How cool is that?

Some of my hobbies include programming computers, learning new programming languages, playing the drums, making music, juggling, playing with retro-computers, designing games, and reading.

I actively collect old video game systems and arcade machines (we call them classics around here), and have a strange fascination with places like DigiBarn or Old Computers. I have acquired quite a collection of old computers, primarily machines from the late 1970s to early 1980s.

I have Stage 4 rectal cancer that has spread to my liver, lungs, and lymph nodes. Read more about my journey.

Here's some other places you might run into me:

The Mediocre Programmer is a book I wrote to help programmers move from being beginning programmers to more advanced programmers. I hope you'll check it out.
I design games. (Learn more about my game designs).
I do stuff and make things.
I'm the host of the Open Metalcast podcast (on hiatus), which features the finest in Creative Commons licensed metal music.
I'm the co-host and post-production engineer of Lococast (on hiatus), where Rick Harding and I talk about all things Ubuntu and Python.
I'm on the board of the Michigan UNIX Users Group. Come on out and join us!
I'm one of the co-founders and host of the Royal Oak Coffee House Coders group. We meet once a week to code and socialize.
I currently maintain the wiki for Pepper&Carrot, and am working on a Pepper & Carrot Fate-Based RPG.
I help maintain Tootstream, which is a command-line client for Mastodon.
I publish all of my current projects on framagit, and itch.io. Also check out my projects page. (My presentations are there as well)
I'm a former practitioner of Getting Things Done. I still use end empty my inbox, maintain my lists and do the Weekly Review but I've scaled back on setting goals the GTD way. Most of what I do now is more reflected in Leo Babauta's Zen to Done.

Here's some other ways you can interact with me:

Want to meet with me? Schedule a meeting (Note: I reserve the right to cancel any meetings).

Whoever gives the money often controls / dictates the terms...

@wjmaggos @angiebaby Whoever gives the money often controls / dictates the terms.

Not far from conditional giving / bribery / paying for it and often regardless of receivers believing in it or not since the constant priority is staying alive / afloat while everything gets more expensive / more conditional deliberately forcing bad choices or eating less as the real alternative.

I'm currently eating less in many ways.

@angiebaby

corporate press. and even the NPR show #PlanetMoney admits that the underwriting that funds public media is not very different from advertising.

Given the choice, people will *NOT* avoid ads and algos... too much effort or ego or offence or laziness... etc

@wjmaggos Ok I have evidence / observation otherwise. You can see for yourself (if you agree it's a close parallel and without hating on anyone in my examples below)

█ People (maybe incl you) use google youtube links already... on Mastodon... that is very similar to choosing and not choosing ads... some *may* have browser extensions (and say so) but my experience from peppering people with invidious links and explaining No ads / less tracking still I see they use the same direct links to Google / YouTube...

█ while at the same not supporting invidious link or proxy-like filtering site for links e.g. redirect.invidious.io/

█ Gargron saying "it's upto others" (paraphrase but wasn't much of a different long answer) and himself doesn't acknowledge the eventual anti-ggl alignment or big supply we are giving them now with millions of links p£r day / per click... 🐭

and so if that isn't eventually considered as feeding the enemy or opposite team, then I'm not sure what is

█ And not linking the education or existing @invidious solution

Clearly there is a reason for Mastodon being different and yes it might be a bit push to say this is continuation of the whole effort and even movement(s).

BUT at some point we might agree ALL FREE / TYPE STUFF NEED TO LINK ARMS, ELSE JUST FEED BAD THINGS / LEAVE BIG GAPS / NOT EVOLVE which opposition does).

So "Given the choice, people will" NOT "avoid ads and algos." THEY WILL BEAR IT AND TREAT IT AS NORMAL unless they have real bee in their bonnet to change links / change app / change phone even as it's too easy to use that.

Quite a few devs didn't change from my constant mentioning / pasting alt links (my account is full of these replies and short polite copy and pastes)

Another evidence you can observe:

█ Count how many times at a party or with friend they play a song and then ADVERT comes up audibly and like an idiot every time swear or run to their phone to wait for the timer to click skip...

If one really thought about it - they would have found another way BUT THEY CONTINUE TO CLICK SKIP.

SUMMARY :
--------------

Not negative here, just seems so many supported truths from

█ my experience talking to everyone here [FEDI NOT TWITTER ETC with less educated] about Google youtube links and people like "mneh"

█ Gargon not acknowledging it as a leak to Google or power source in general to educate / take into our hands that we could do / he could do/ Mastodon if wanted could do

█ Phone usage overall people not understanding and willing to do the long way around as normal or willing payment for their free stuff... almost like "oh adverts but oh I can't wait till that great song I will play next" x10000000

@errhead

I don't think it's intelligence. The influence of money over how we think is stronger here than anywhere else. To the greatest degree possible anywhere, we're programmed to be lazy thinkers. Buy shit. Don't question. The 1A is awesome but combined with the worship of capitalism here and how mass media evolved, it allows for a lot of fuckery with the American psyche.

@JeffC1956 @volkris@qoto.org @volkris@mastodon.sdf.org

exactly. which is why I do my podcast with the tagline "liberal values are worth fighting for". we're all limited in understanding and have different philosophies. there has to be a base level of agreement that we will accept other's understandings of the world and perspectives, or action becomes impossible. like the physical world, we have a set of assumptions that our social world will respond within certain bounds. the simplest example might be language.

@wjmaggos @mmasnick I don't get the 2nd paragraph about following others, wondering if you can clarify specifically the part in this context that says "but by following others who follow and boost others etc, the freedom is very limited by their choices." ?

I might have to accept I will never sort through my files...

I might have to accept I will never sort out my files (all diff types) and will die leaving it unsorted and unshared... I think it's mainly because:

1/ Lack of demand / partnership as incentive and purpose (there's not real reason or appreciation to sort through my stuff for project or just for fun).

2/ Lack of my ability / method

"Politicians" might mean individual politicians and the "extended arms from their position, of the law and everything that comes from Politicians in the paid domino of people in the mechanism of 'the system' "...

@volkris @volkris@mastodon.sdf.org @amerika @wjmaggos @JeffC1956 Ok I see a slight play with words here of what we mean - the difference between me saying "politician" and the meaning of "extended arms of them in law or everything that comes from Politicians / their decisions / orders etc"... So in super-specific terms yes I agree it's not the politician doing things directly to people personally (like the paper work / enforcement of that / bodily contact) ....

...but I mean both the extension of them and their own self spawning such ideals. The growth of power and mechanism (almost like tools or domino of people) that grows from all that I think is to be respected as power.

And to add to power, the draining of our money is itself as a power over others by taking away from others.

We do have power individually we give or don't fight, but the snowball of systems is well over the power of individual.

When you said about society collectively make me think we are actually that solid or tight or even know what we mean... and then using that power already pre-meditatively limited... but I accept that you are firm about what you are saying.

It can be both systems and individuals doing / not doing [very unlikely just one or the other].

Politics has a system and rolling people behind it which we pay for and go to jail for potentially if we don't follow... that is power!

@volkris @amerika @wjmaggos @JeffC1956 Not sure it's that simple - and politics tends to use and snowball previous power, law, rules, people, etc so I think there is existing systematic power which rolls on each generation each year,,,

And people tend to 'listen' because it's really a 'threat' and often ultimatum. backup often with jail time- so it's not just words (maybe seems so at first but enforced isn't just words).

The people can say what they want but they are paying for their oppression so that loop means we pay for the policing!

So while it's true we have to believe or go along with it to a certain extent, the physical policing is undoubtedly there and often to shocking levels or at least annoying intervention against it's own population it should be listening to (measurably all leader don't really do that).

When you have to work so hard to live (soft-slavery) we do have some power but as individuals lack snowballing much again a system that have been doing it for centuries.

IF ONLY people higher up in Politics and Power had the will for encouraging collective happiness....

@volkris @amerika @wjmaggos @JeffC1956
Ideal power and politics for me is:

*IF* people higher up in Politics and Power had the will for better for others - the will to encourage people to speak and listen, so more often they could all work from and towards collective "happiness" (or just less and less suffering if not happiness).

That would be my ideal power and politics.

Force, manipulation, control with and without consent is probably good to mention.

But power and politics only used for more soft war (force, manipulation, control) and more of the other types of passive force, then it's almost worse than direct violence because direct violence is a lot clearer.
At least for you die for something as direct violence and at the hands of un-carers / neglecting controllers, soft types draws things out as people multiply.

So living now is not as clear, meaningful or even useful apart from "feeding my family" by almost any means necessary.

P.S
Volkris can you say more what your last sentence is saying / meaning. Thanks

re: People talking and working together more often, naturally brings more personal politics - it's almost inseparable as part of being human and imperfect (we gotta live with that)... and practise it better... (not the Hollywood stuff I mean personally more)... (less all the Hollywood type politics sold to us / distracting us)

@amerika @wjmaggos @JeffC1956 I gotcha buddy, no probs. How about the planned audio talking for a bit one time?
