Why is it that doing things you have no obligation to do is much more fun?

Sometimes the same task in one context is joy/play and in another is drudgery/chore...

@Alephwyr Ok here's a dragon in front of you now to grow more intelligence or consider whatever you think the next steps are... so what next I ask as potential willing follower?

(I might following my other things already but main question to you is have a person in front of you imagine, what would like to ask them to do / what you can do with them in the future - as we can't stay static). I have my own ideas but like idea of dragons like something pixar anim-esque / pokemon-ish (just some place where you can grow) was appealing as a kind of role...

so the first sentence got me interested as a dragon similar to care as you are .... to see what you would say as I'm sure you either have some ideas prepared or within a few minutes you could have some ideas...

How does any movement grow people and their mindset if it's only directly computer-related (or "babble" to the unknowing)... other areas and sector of humanity needed by every cause...

@Alephwyr @rms
Not slating either of you - both kinda right in it's own way.

But more-so noticed usually doesn't want / didn't talk about human things before (or maybe I haven't followed for a while) so wanted to ask how you see it or him, as I thought of change as starting from human and and with a ending more than just computers - but he wouldn't reply to me on that at all despite reading it!

For computer stuff it was quick replies and was gentlemanly - so it's over my head growing anything without all the human stuff literally being aligned at least as we go along...

because if a movement doesn't grow people's mindset more directly (more than computers or "babble" to the unknowing) then I don't know how any movement is going to make a change outside their bubble which I think he's already conquered a while back and could switch it up / move sector now keeping similar lines !)

Long question for you since he doesn't answer here... Was good to see another comment.

#Question (Rhetorical) - Dutch East India Company...

Is there anywhere the Dutch East India Company hasn't been around in the world (seems everywhere or at least trading everywhere)...

Even the people I've know from there are like explorers with scary stamina - don't want to imagine a whole troop or any brutal slavery and wars as conquest / trade!

BBC Extending Mastodon / Fediverse social media... Summary notes

BBC Extending Mastodon / Fediverse social media...

Summary of facts and notes below (almost cut and paste + full text source is after this list):

█ Trial has been for 6 accounts for 6 months: incl. R&D, Radio 4, and 5 Live.

█ 60,000 followers total (six trial accounts, not all as main focus)

█ very little moderation of replies were needed

█ most comments and feedback have been positive,

█ replies, re-posts and likes sometimes significantly larger engagement for some specific topics they've posted

====================
VERY GOOD POINT BELOW (FOR ALL EXISTING FEDIVERSE COMMUNITIES)...
====================

█ "we may not be able to engage and reply as much as the Mastodon community and culture expect, and we recognise this could be an issue going forward."

I think already lots of people don't answer as individual or even worse as a company on Fediverse...
And... They really should (especially the alternative communities) for the many types of positive or "just don't wait to get eaten by the Google T-Rex dinosaur" type of reasons I'll list below:

● respecting fans
● involving fans (recirculating the movements / causes / skills)
● allowing a safer place than Facebook / Github or at least more neutral even if they have benefits to do a "public test" phase here until it gets really unmanageable and then accept defeat IF NEEDED.

Many companies don't want to do the human work... maybe all of them...

█ "we need to be particularly careful with our editorial processes and within the scope of this trial we are not in a position to guarantee time and effort from other teams outside of R&D. This means we haven't been able to include BBC News in the trial yet, but we are working on it."

BBC - Extending Mastodon social media...

Posted by Tristan Ferne, Bill Thompson on 13 Feb 2024

In July 2023 we announced our plan to establish a BBC presence in the distributed collection of social networks known as the Fediverse, a collection of social media applications all linked together by common protocols, as part of our research into social technologies. The experimental BBC Mastodon server at social.bbc has now been running for six months and hosts accounts for R&D, Radio 4, and 5 Live.
Extending our Mastodon social media trial

We were aiming to learn about how much work and cost this involved, how many people we’d reach, what levels of engagement we would get and to explore the risks and benefits of the federated model. The trial so far has been really effective in helping us learn about how the Fediverse is evolving, what technical support a Mastodon server needs, what the costs are, and how a large media organisation like the BBC can engage with the many different overlapping communities that exist in this rapidly changing space.
We are therefore pleased to say that we are going to continue the trial for at least another six months while we share our findings internally and seek more engagement from other BBC teams. We are also planning to start some technical work into investigating ways to publish BBC content more widely using ActivityPub, the underlying protocol of Mastodon and the Fediverse.

So far in the trial we’ve amassed around 60,000 followers across our six trial accounts, and we have had to do very little moderation of replies associated with our content. Reassuringly, most of the comments and feedback have been positive, welcoming both our interest and the way we have set things up.We’ve had really encouraging levels of engagement (i.e. replies, re-posts and likes) on Mastodon. For some equivalent posts we’ve seen significantly larger engagement numbers for Mastodon compared to X/Twitter, particularly given the relative sizes of different platforms. We think this is partly due to the culture of Mastodon, and partly because of some of the topics we’ve posted about. Because this an experiment and a trial, it's not always the main priority for all the teams involved, so we may not be able to engage and reply as much as the Mastodon community and culture expect, and we recognise this could be an issue going forward.

We have been asked by a number of people on Mastodon to include BBC News social accounts in the trial. Because of the potential sensitivity around news stories, we need to be particularly careful with our editorial processes and within the scope of this trial we are not in a position to guarantee time and effort from other teams outside of R&D. This means we haven't been able to include BBC News in the trial yet, but we are working on it.
And to be clear, the @BBC_News_Labs account represents the R&D team working on news technologies and doesn't represent BBC News as a whole.

Over the next six months the trial will continue and we will continue to learn. We will make best efforts to post and engage with our audiences and add more BBC accounts to the trial. Internally, we’ll continue to talk to teams about future plans and strategies for a BBC presence on Mastodon and other emerging social technologies, and we’ll stay in touch with the community by publishing updates like this, hoping that they are useful and relevant to others using or considering a presence on Mastodon or in the wider Fediverse.

The last six months have been invaluable in improving our understanding of what it takes for an organisation like the BBC to be a good member of the Fediverse, and opened up new areas for investigation, such as looking at ways of using ActivityPub as an alternative publishing mechanism for BBC content, alongside the social uses of Mastodon.

We have been encouraged by the support we’ve had from the wider community and found a lot of interest internally. Our hope is that this work will lead to long-term BBC engagement with the wider network of federated online services, and that we will be able to serve the communities here just as we provide public value in other online spaces.

Q1. Do users see Fediverse reply to questions from @AskUbuntu? Q2. Can you make "User-based answers" happen on Fediverse... Thanks!

@popey Hi popey, question please in more detail from the shorter CW title...

1. Do users see a reply to questions on Fediverse?... I tried to answer some but no answer (yet) and think that would be great.

Also you 'should' write that which ever way it works (many accounts like this say if replies are seen or if it doesn't reach the user asking).

2. I also wrote a longer thing for communities to actually allow a reply to help like this via Fediverse account ... but thought to check with you (now after writing so excuse me) if that is the case or can be done?
Below is copy of my writing to this effect about the usage of answers via Fediverse.... All is positive :thumbsup_hmn_h2:

Fediverse Help System for Ubuntu etc [Social Media / Crowd-based help for users / semi-officially)... ?

@AskUbuntu = great way to hear about Ubuntu problems from users as they ask... BUT currently can't answer via Fediverse... This would be GREAT!

IMAGINE you could answer also !
I did actually but no reply yet.

For example.. Someone if asked "how to XYZ" in Ubuntu someone could answer here since we have time and already "logged in" !

Currently I must log into their "other site" to answer - At this stage it's like "Why do I have to log in?" without sounding too pretentious or expecting everything (doesn't really seem needed and is it not enough to be on Fediverse and just ban people here?).

Right now appreciate the @AskUbuntu account here is like an echo for problems and you have more control on your site for logged in comments, but people could also be pointed to Fediverse a generic footer added to site or posts.

Nobody wants / is likely to get an account other than those with problems (!) and for each site even less likely... so for adding simple social media type comments, can you make it so we can answer them here, even with disclaimer it's unofficial and by other fans?

So for other people take note of the Ubuntu account @askubuntu so official things like this can be solved by "User-based answers" FOR THE WAY" - or just one-way problems for now 🙄

BUT LET ME PEOPLE KNOW and say you're on to also get answers here as your social help system!

@villares Alright, great!

- Yes that link was deliberate as a link and as a kind of 1 page works very well to get the meaning quickly / see the variation.

- Thanks for lining up my Mastodon challenge and setting some thoughts about it. qoto.org/@freeschool/112661830

- Meantime if I can help encourage or speed up any of your work, just let me know. English typing, subtitles, transcript and actually anything considered.
Say if there's anything you need reading or have existing list, send me- I believe everyone can speculate some help and can say if there is anything. But understand if point a few is also not needed! Just as a check sometimes sending comments can help and I'm happy even if they are even dismissed.

:thumbsup_hmn_h2: Good stuff - with a 1 or 2 can be fun or just encouraging :) so I'm encouraged by your reply ! :thumbsup_hmn_h2:

#Paradox of Life - You need others to grow (for the bad or good,to consume them)... no way around it...

of Life - You need others to grow... so even the mental work you can't avoid... you can only displace it / hand that work to others (unless you are working with people yourself and growing with them more closely as you do everything else).

"Cruel Paradox" could even be said because even with "Love" or positives not everyone wants to follow or do reasonably...

I've known many friends that even have a lot but are destined to destroy so needing heavy therapy and mental-checks by everyone to do this route.

There will be killings, without me jumping now to extremes, because people will want to stop others, one way or the other.

And also in the name of love people can want to protect people and things, so how to share all that... indeed to share at all... It's hard enough sharing my music when I got it free! (sharing makes people less special and less scarcity in terms of material)

So "to grow life" (grow healthier people) isn't easy.

Flavoured water and liquids for body and mind since we're 70% water...

Good work is achieved by drinking non-stop or having something on had whenever you feel...

If water is considered good but a bit too neutral in taste for you, then consider flavouring but not necessarily over-riding the water always, a varied amount also takes any solid food to make it a lot cheaper / easier for body to absorb:

===================
Flavoured water examples:
===================

= Infusion which is a posh word for let it sit in water and flavour it

= Soups = leave anything in water and cook

= Diluting existing liquids (milk, juice etc)

You can try liquefy foods also by juicer or blender and then adding water... but unless you're ready it's often better to keep solids for when you really need sometimes and stick to what natural you can get and find around watered-down of everything (leaves, mint, elderflower, add a bit of sugar, milk if you like, whatever and then reduce it's intensity after starting this liquid style)

Listen to Audio version... (9mins)
➡️ bin.dembased.xyz/money-as-debt ⬅️ (no tricks it's, minimal)

This rest of this post is text version of that audio to lay out the *very basic underlying problem* to all the shit show on top:

The facts of our adversities, even without Mozilla as the focus, are:

█1█ We are all forced to sell.

Either which way, we can't be independent - we are attached to many bad providers all over the place as Gabriele Svelto said already (@gabrielesvelto
fosstodon.org/@gabrielesvelto/)

█2█ Money creation and Banks usage are root problem

All money is paid for on top of the face value (e.g. loans means people pay $110 for every 100 note! So it's actually worth $90 immediately!)
And banks and people re-loaning all money again cheapens it even more. The 100 I give to my friend is not worth 100 - many people re-loaned this money even before it got to me so even I don't pay I and you are effected by other people's usage / loaning / paying for money before even using it!
Even if money is air or a material like a pot, a bank says "pay me half a pot* and I'll give you a pot* for it - but I won't give you it before you give me... (* or any material)

🎤 If you want audio version of this point, listen to audio here... (no tricks it's, minimal)

➡️ bin.dembased.xyz/money-as-debt ⬅️

█3█ and itself is PARADOX!

Quite a bit of a paradox and even without privacy over profit on top - it's a basic fact that if you broadcast something you can't trust in almost anyone or anything to use it only in the way YOU want (you plural as we all use it differently and have varied levels of feeling what is "OK" for us).

Many people can use your broadcast (so yes education, news etc and yes misinformation, profit 📈 🙄 even if I don't agree or can measure it fairer than even you!)... Short answer: Software like Mastodon and Fediverse needs to at least make it more tp legally say / add disclaimer in the footer that "NO CONSENT GIVEN TO SCRAPE OR USE THIS DATA COMMERCIALLY OR BY ANY COMMERCIAL ENTITY" - because not saying that also plays into anyone's hands and well you didn't even say so yourself!.... the effort to protect users is yours AND ADMINS (IF NOT SOFTWARE TO REMIND OR MAKE OPTION FOR IT)

Alternative version: You can tel someone something even without technology and they can use it wisely (for measurable good) or like gossip twist it (for measurable bad)

====================
☑️ Basically the short answer to all this is Mastodon and Mozilla AND YOU need add disclaimers and/or work that actually work to avoid all the above 3 points to respect the fundamental problems we're in (no wonder all the countries use money exactly the same right? It's oppression / cheating numbers by the home or away teams).

The container you are in are basically:

money
+ domination of governments taxing / selling you for it's own profit
+ expecting others to do your work
+ not talking to people like me who can literally hold your hand without humiliating you... like a good Linux pal installing it for you... install anti-everything else or at least be aware so it's not only Mozilla but literally the badly made man-made material and algorithms of money which is $ = $ + [pay bank for money first]

:boost: I'm the REALEST PERSON I KNOW HERE lol ➡️ who actually answers fast and to your death if you're as serious as I am - i accept measured / good points and even your feelings... ⬅️

So Mozilla, a privacy focused browser company, just bought an advertising company? Did I get that right? Did a company with a focus on privacy just buy another company where the business model can only really succeed if privacy is destroyed?

Cause that seems pretty fucking sus to me

@eniko let's not hide behind a finger: Firefox development has been ad-funded since Mozilla signed the search agreement with Google in 2005. It's just that Google was serving the ads instead of Mozilla proper, but does it really matter when that represents 90% of the company income? (it's a bit less now, but it has been that way for most of the time)

@eniko there's two problems with that: development is ad-funded and the company can't be really independent. If they could fix the second part but not the first it wouldn't be great, but it'd be better. However I'm not holding my breath about either.
