Decided to make a new demo video for niri, finally. The last one was so old that niri didn't even have cursors implemented, it showed an orange rectangle instead. 🫠

Here's the link again for the curious: github.com/YaLTeR/niri

Very happy I've come this far writing my own compositor from scratch. Honestly thought my motivation would only last for two weeks max, but here we are. :blobcattea:

Learned a ton in the process, and now this experience helps me with Mutter & Shell profiling.

I was able to get app to open via flatpak, it would start with a black sceen, and then when I clicked switch app the Librem 11 front light would come on and after about 10 seconds it would snap a quick image before freezing.

It didn't save that image. But I was able to take a screenshot to show the quality comparison between and `gnome-snapshot`

I also tried to load camera app, but it said
`Could not read device name from device tree. Could not find any config file.`

I decided to break out my commentary on the audio into it's own 2nd post (see profile). I also created a 3rd post where I decided to take 4 indoor example photos -- 2 with the front camera, and 2 with the back camera.

camera app for has pretty bad ms feedback for pretty much any webcam I've used, even the $200 logitech 4k cameras. And of course I doubt if there is a color profile added to these photos, maybe something that will change with the new Gnome Snapshot app.

Overall again, I am pleased, having a hobbyist farmiliarity with photography I am sure that this thing would shoot some great photos during the day, indoors and outdoor under more optimal cloudy lighting conditions.

I will definately be keeping an eye on what cameras are in Generation II devices in the space, but until then this will do just fine for me like if I want to do a video call or whatnot.

Maybe I'll take those other example photos tomorrow if I remember.

Regarding the 5mp back camera and 2mp front camera. I have taken 4 test shots using .

The color gradation profile could be updated to improve the color accuracy, and while not a camera for professional use, I am pleased with the results.

The first picture is the 5MP back camera

Regarding commentary on the audio, one of my room mates is a audio engineer and asked me how the volume is. I checked again and it is pretty loud overall. I keep it about 80% and my spouse says she can hear it through her open back headphones pretty well and is singing along. So when compared to cellphones, a big step up.

Here is what I am listening to: Gabriel & Dresden ( youtube.com/watch?v=ucif5TtF9d )

Regarding the other specs, I did notice when looking at Starlite 5 again that each camera is only 2 MP and the Librem 11 has a 5 MP back camera.

Also, I keep forgetting that Librem 11 has 1TB NVME storage, I am floored, I am used to only having maybe 32GB when using a cellphone for the Linux OS portion and i typically offload any heavy content to a (hopefully Gen2 speed) MicroSD card slot.

Because the form factor is 16:10 and not 3:2 I think with the keeb it is more compact and would fit better on a small table or at a coffee shop. I am not particularly big on "Track Pads" though if it's there I'll use it. Something to consider too when comparing against the

I do like 3:2 form factor okayish too, what I really hate is 16:9.

As a programmer I am fairly happy with the key set, though I would note that I don't see a [ Insert ] key for vim usage, the arrow keys will take a little getting used to but I am already adapting just fine. Also I don't think there is a print screen key and I had to installed my "Screenshot" app separately through Flathub, maybe I can create a keybinding to work around one or both of these issues. I do think the adage you get what you pay for is often true, and the build quality, materials, aluminum keys, aluminum case edge and so on do present nicely and have the QA I would hope to expect.

Also in earlier posts I was skeptical of the air vent holes on the side in case water got on the device in the bottom left area when docked with the keeb. I thought that this would be a bigger issue for me, but it seems to be a non-issue. Just wanted to put that out there.

Regarding my confusion about the keyboard and case cover, for some reason I thought the was supposed to fold down like the on the right. Now that I understand the magnetic cover I would love to see of the the way the case is a kickstand on the starlite impairs functionality or not. It's so hard to get this kind of experience without buying both and getting it hands on.

The is great so far, I've been giving a shot since it is flagship distro -- there are things that I think need improvement -- like (a) some of the pureos apps are not as good as their counterparts -- like for example flathub has 2.0 while pureos is still 1.38 0 -- or (b) the native `gnome-calculator` app for some reason doesn't respect "Dark Theme" mode in -- same with -- the flatpak version needs to be installed by console (same with ).

I'm writing this from and i much prefer it to android apps. ++ -maps all seem to be working just fine.

Having had no prior experience with sized devices with a keyboard, it wasn't obvious to me how the magnetic cover snaps to the back of the tablet in a λ kind of shape.

Contact sync with works as expected, and email seems like a good fit for this size device, though I typically prefer -- I'm going to give that a try later.

seems clogged up when I try to login to my -- though I had a lot of rooms and person to person chats. I am thinking of installing the version to see if that fixes it, but then that would seem odd to not use pureos version. It sometimes shows my rooms and contacts double in the left sidebar. Though I have been impressed when using my and version of the app as I am new to it. It's a bit rough but seems to have come a long way.

Overall the device is pretty snappy, I have 6 apps open as I write this and it is doing just fine.

takes photos and videos just fine. I tried to get the "snapshot" "camera" app running but it doesn't automatically detect the cameras. I am not sure if this is because it is a flatpak or not. I enabled the permissions in

I strongly recommend a wireless bluetooth mouse. I am using a inexpensive logitech m535 and it works great. Wifi, no complaints there.

I do think that the default apps in the pureos repos should either be updated or omitted as the default software source, suchas the package when intalled has a theme that makes it look like it's from the 1990s whereas the flatpak version is very nice.

I've been watching over the last decade and I am presently surprised how far purism and the and people have come. Excellent work @ all. I think this is a great device to do development on as it runs much faster than my and even my librem5. And it's not qemu, and the device seems easy enough to reflash -- one thing I especially like about the librem5 aswell when compared to other processes like fumbling through pmbootstrap to reflash to
I am still trying to figure out what the best music app for this device is -- I do like

Internal sound quality isn't amazing, but I wouldn't call it bad either when comparing to some of the other small form factor devices with mobile speakers I've owned. It's fine as a fallback but you are better off with a bluetooth headset to complement it or a tiny portable bluetooth speaker.

Some options like "scale apps to fullscreen" are not easy to find so I had to set a few options in dconf-editor. I think there is a app called "Mobile Settings" that might have it. Not all apps have the dialogs constrained inside the screen dimensions like the Geany Open dialog for example (which is understandable as this app hasn't targeted mobile or tablet yet as far as I know.)

I use the device to watch online videos, for instant messaging via matrix via / and it does just fine. I haven't tested it with or anything but from what I've seen I'm sure it'd do just fine.

Epiphany "Install Website as App" is a great feature -- I have several I've added to my App Menu, Epiphany has always had trouble though being on the lean side. I do wish that I had this option on ESR, in any case I've just switched to again as I prefer it.

I am interesting in comparing phosh to as I might want to use that instead someday. I have used and it's hard to put into words in some ways I like it more than phosh, and in other ways I am just not used to the apps -- some apps are just better out of box like their notes app, I like that they have a flashlight button in their top menu. Their UX scaling and fluidity is really good. I am glad that everything is doing such a good job and friendly competition will drive each side to keep improving.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered this device on day 1, but I am glad I did. And as I don't have a laptop or like laptops or conventional smartphones very much for me this device is kindof a big deal that I can do basic and things on the go along with communication and such without all the headache of android, ios or windows which is not a option for me as linux is just better.

If you think about the space -- the is pretty revolutionary to start to see these kinds of firmwares in all in one hardware. And of course this automatic disk encryption is a nice bonus though not something I need as a enthusiast unless maybe I want to travel with the device and protect my data.

People will have different criticisms, and opinions, and I may be easy-going but overall my opinion is that I am pleased with the utility the device offers and I think any rough edges will only get better in the software over time. I may switch the default distro eventually to do some more research and exploring in the linux mobile space -- but it's a little unclear who the big names are worth checking out. I did postmarketos for a while but I feel like the QA is a little all over the place and their package manager is a little difficult to use when I want to check the available software versions, and the phone space is such a mess to try to document and navigate if you are trying to use a previously android device.

I'm also interested in how the will compare and contrast in the future. Having used this device I can't recommend something in this size without a keyboard and mouse for more complex usage, I didn't really undestand that the Librem11 keyboard is wired at first, but now that I have figured it out I prefer the simple tech vs overcomplication.

All in all, I think they have a winner, and I expect to get a lot of use out of this as a side rig to my main desktop. Would buy again, and excited to see all the software improvements coming downstream.

After using app a few months, if I had one piece of feedback I think would help improve the app it would be to have options on how many hours or days the timeline would display. I typically check the 2 times a day and after scrolling past the edge of the feed it wants to immediately jump me to the last hour or two when I missed 6 hours in between.

I'm not really sure exactly how this should change but currently the buttons are easy to miss and a lot of content in the feed is accidently not shown which IMO isn't really great the way it currently is.

In other ways though its still the best I have and will be with me until I ditch android altogether.
