I do like it here on Mastodon, but the huge influx of people from Twitter means there are far fewer image descriptions than from even a couple of weeks ago. I’d love to tell every one of them about this, but quite frankly there are so many I don’t have the patience. I’d dearly love it if apps could block posts unless an image description was added to every photo, but I suppose that’s too much to hope for. I’m feeling really excluded from so many conversations. It’s getting as bad as Twitter.

A slightly wet Polish Lowland , Bruno, of the pack, in our slightly wet . There should be much more water here now, but we're losing it quickly as old ditches are cleared to make meadows in the background easier to mow. Farmers don't really need all that hay, but they get paid for this, and if they don't mow them they will get no money.

Out of nowhere, my nephew just asked, “Do you think Pavlov thought about feeding his dog every time he heard a bell ring?” and now I’m going to be haunted by this question.

We know from genetics that army ants, as a group, are 80-ish million years old, predating the extinction of the dinosaurs. So this discovery of the oldest known army ant fossil, from 35 mya, is not exactly surprising. But still a great find.

Call me old-fashioned but when it comes to COVID-19, I'd still prefer not to f*ck around and find out.

Some folks insist that wearing a mask in crowds and inside public spaces is an overreaction— this despite a preponderance of evidence showing microvascular damage from even mild COVID infections.

I'll keep wearing my mask, thank you very much.

, our dogs, want to turn left. The road straight ahead is much longer and they know it.

That one tree with dried leaves is probably not well as apoptosis didn't kick in on time. We''ll see how it survives the winter.

Opposite the highly managed 'Nature" reserve of Stover park, replete with poetry walks, is a thin strip of opportunistic wood/scrub land. It's pitted and, as this is Devon, these are almost always full of rain water. Rain water that has run off the busy road that intersects the "Nature" reserve from the scrub and is full of diesel, petrol and oil.

Its a beautiful place.

If you enjoy someone's post on #Mastodon go ahead and click the star. If someone tells you that's meaningless because there's no #algorithm, ignore them. Sure, boost the post too if you want others to also see the post, but don't think telling someone you like what they posted is somehow unimportant. In real life I don't tell someone, "good job," or "well said," or "I love that," for the sake of some algorithm, I do it because I'm human and they are too. It's fundamental to being truly social.

The #BC government’s #wolf cull continues unabated.

Quote: “Wolves are being killed every winter in British Columbia as part of the government’s caribou recovery program. But the root causes of caribou population declines are humans, not #wolves. The Province needs to address the human-caused disruptions to critical #caribou habitat and stop killing wolves.”
