I’m thinking of donating to a few services, products and organisations that I use and respect, and that I think are doing a lot of good. (That on top of my yearly 10% donation and the tiny contributions that I do every month through .)

I’m making a little list of beneficiaries. My idea is to throw ~1m₿ to each project, or the equivalent in fiat.

I’ll share the list soon. There are some obvious entries (eg, Wikimedia Foundation, F-Droid, Mastodon), but if you want to suggest something specific, I’m all ears!

I've seen a few people ask what happens if the instance you are on closes down.

Tradition on Mastodon is that all the people on that instance are buried alive with the admin in a giant pyramid made of old phones and laptops. 😵

It's official... #mastodon has now over 6 million registered accounts.

Congratulations @Gargon and the whole crew working on the code, congratulations to all admins who tirelessly help building this amazing network and congratulations to all new users.

Let's make sure they stay active by supporting them!

Oh and by the way if you want to support Eugen... please consider a donation 👉 patreon.com/mastodon

New to ? (Welcome!) Here’s how to follow a account from here:

  1. Enter the Twitter handle (say foobar) on beta.birdsite.live (pro tip: better to host your own instance!)
  2. Copy the resulting (pseudo) user ID (it’ll be @foobar@beta.birdsite.live)
  3. Search for that ID on your Mastodon UI, and you’ll see the new (pseudo) Mastodon account
  4. Now you can follow it!

You won’t be able to boost those toots, and your replies won’t reach that user (since they’re not actually on Mastodon). But at least you’ll see their (Twitter) content on your timeline, and you can favourite, add to your lists, bookmark, etc.

: IT’S COMPLICATED.

(And that’s why smaller, independent, decentralised servers — like those running — have a much better chance at striking the right balance and keeping their users happy!)

It’s amazing that we’re not amazed by those instances of . What the hell are they thinking?

Did you know that the European Union had an official Mastodon instance where only official EU institutions could open an account?

social.network.europa.eu/explo

No need to pay for a blue checkmark, accounts on this instance are, by definition, officials.

That’s Fediverse done right!

The ’s “Better Life Index” seems to correlate (even) better than with subjective well-being:

My own country 🇪🇸 ranks no. 21 in BLI:

I’d love to see it used more widely, and more work on this and other metrics of and .

@freemo, please refresh my mind: are you accepting small donations to support QOTO (in crypto or in fiat)? I can’t seem to find that on the about page

(Also: are you seeing a surge in users? If so, how are your systems coping with it?)

Another #Mastodon tip…

Use this search link to find Mastodon accounts for people you follow on Twitter (if they've tweeted about them):

A few years ago I made this flow chart of which Mastodon posts end up in which timelines!

So, you can see how each instance will have a different local timeline, and even a slightly different federated timeline - and you can see why the federated timeline moves so much faster than the local one, too.

This is why it's important to boost good posts and use hashtags - the fediverse is fragmented and harder to search by nature.

Beautiful , and beautiful :

“I favor selectively shining a light on the offending symbols, imagery, and language, both past and present, as a reminder of our history and of how far we still have to go as a society… and of how vigilant we need to be.”

“I’ve never believed my role as an was to make work that ensured comfort. My paintings are purposefully subject to alternate interpretations, and a reading of Comparative Religions 101 that provokes anger is certainly possible if the viewer is a literalist. But I can’t explain the humor and irony in the work to a literalist, any more than I can explain Red to a person who is (red/green) colorblind.”
