Thank you @snowded for taking the time and effort to write this blog post and linking to where I can learn and discover more. Highly recommended.

Just figured out that using the phone camera in 5 is as easy as all the places say; it is testing it that was a pain. Next stop: how to handle the actual upload, especially barcode reading.

<input type="file" accept="image/*" capture>

@icedquinn ooh! I didn't expect you to speak my language.

It's probably too much of a rabbit hole to actually recommend to someone, but with exwm and buffler I don't think I have this problem of irrelevant clutter getting in the way of my navigation.

eg,

@icedquinn I'm pretty sure I get this from Projectile or other project managers. But maybe it depends which irrelevancies are getting in your way

@swiley I haven't used Windows in so long, I hadn't thought of that. Thanks! Probably still faster than running your Linux in a VM in Windows, though, right? Unless they are harvesting your SS usage...

@writh @freemo I just noted a post from Mastodon showing up on my Twitter feed in 3 minutes. The other direction seems faster. Perhaps Mastodon is checked on a 5-minute poll, or some such. No big deal either way since five minutes is fine by me, and I love the way it auto-threads long toots. But perhaps a useful datapoint.

Perhaps Windows doesn't deserve unreserved criticism these days. By all accounts they are friends to Linux and much open-source stuff. Then why is it that I have a gag-reflex at the idea of replacing my linux systems with it?

- I don't like the fundamental premise that they are locking users into something in the name of ease, complete with closed-source software, ad models, and data mining, and too much "trying to help" users with no clear way to tell the system "just trust me."

- Call me immature, but I chafe at the setup with one entity watching, controlling, spoon feeding, profiting, and punishing. Which is what Windows and/or Microsoft (and, to similar degree, Apple) feels like to me.

- I just plain old don't like windows (lower-case) -- as in, the entire approach to a gui based on a squishy analogy to physical space.

Before I stew this up into a blog post, I'd love to hear more takes on this.

TypeScript has really good garbage collection

It just marked half of my code as garbage

@b6hydra Thanks for the explanation. And here I am just trying to get my apache redirects to work cleanly.

@worldsendless CNAME cloaking is a fancy term for what's basically just falsifying DNS records. You still serve ads and tracking cookies from 3rd parties (i.e. doubleclick.net), but you use a CNAME record to make it look like it's coming from the 1st party domain (i.e. google.com). It makes browser add-ons or network level adblockers like pi-hole or adguard home ineffective because everything looks like it's coming from the actual site you're browsing.

@flaviocopes Overall — JS inconsistency and incompleteness (half-bakedness), especially the OOP implementation (everything is an object in JS, even arrays and functions and yet, no private properties or methods).

Pre-ES6 — type coercion.

Post-ES6 — single-threaded event loop architecture.

I am still deciphering my emotional response to, "Why have a Linux system when you could install Linux in Windows?" What are equivalents? "Why have plain pizza when you could have it with anchovies?" "Why use milk when you could have twice as much by adding water?" "Why catch a cold when you could just catch COVID?"

I'm a firm believer of Hanlon's Razor, but over a week, Facebook has flagged a post and a comment of mine, both about Mastodon (and including a link to joinmastodon.org)
