@mikmaqpeek : "You and your stiff upper lip!" #acdc
@LaurelRye @mikmaqpeek I will make sure she sees your message! She's very shy.
@freemo I brought my wife on board here yesterday. I really didn't encourage her participation on Twitter because I already knew how rough and tumble it is. She has panic and anxiety disorder severe enough to be a disability. She does NOT need... well, Twitter is as Twitter does.
My hope is to get her plugged in with a good group of #grandma s, #knitting , #crochet , #heartdisease kind-hearted folks to help her through the long winter as she is largely housebound. I didn't bother trying on that other site.
@PhotonEmpress The sci-fi and educational shows in my head as a child, I saw Space: 1999 in my feed a moment ago... the things I KNEW were factual and real... warred with the religious gobbledygook. I'm glad the Supernatural stuff lost the war inside me.
More opening shows from, "this is what it was to be a kid loving science and reality back then," please!
@TheStrugglingScientists Seems like so much of life. Things I cared about then mean nothing to me now, while things that didn't bother me then terrify me today.
@ovid What determines the launch windows? I thought it was primarily orbital mechanics. Ground Service / propulsion as secondary issues. I get the impression from your post GSE/ hardware more limit the window than the delta V to hit the targets. I'm an armchair enthusiast only, not my wheelhouse.
@LouisIngenthron And I see it wasn't "toot" originally, until the 2016 incident referred to.
As with so many things in life, it would appear this is like diarrhea: it runs in your jeans (genes), and once there, it's hard to get the stains out.
Thank you for showing me the back-history with the link you provided, that it wasn't this way from the beginning, and that dropping "toot" is more i18n friendly, is perceived more professional, and would have people (including my wife) more comfortable.
@LouisIngenthron That may be the case, but in a federated, open project like this, I believe there is room to a) allow for alternatives in the direction you think things should go, and b) champion the "better alternative" to make it a general consensus change.
And not having read the link yet, but just my personal "days old" experience... I think this change is worth striving for a consensus.
@LouisIngenthron @Gargron Would you have a link handy? I suspect the answer is a "skin" that would be like a language file, at least for the website. I believe the app does not use "toot." The very first thing I did was go "dark mode" on the website. I guess it's cute when the project is small and "amateurish," but if you are going for a #TwitterMigration alternative, small and "amateurish" is *not* what you want to project.
@LouisIngenthron @freemo My wife at first laughed that "tooting" is right up my alley, but since then she'd prefer I talk to her about "publish" or "sending." As a proper lady, she doesn't "toot."
Tilly: spoiled so rotten she smells bad. 😍

Hello to my loving wife! I'm glad to greet you here.
https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2018/08/mastodon-quick-start-guide/ has people introducing themselves. You may introduce yourself if you would like, or do that later. And of course, I am always available should you have questions. Love you!
@antares https://qoto.org/@aosinski/109300791668210752 seemed less than inspiring. Voting for me is an affirmation of my personal values. This is what *I* want. This is who *I* am. Damn straight it's a "love letter!" It is one for myself. If I can't express my love for my own values in my vote, of what use is it to me? Oh, well I can express rage, and I did: towards the Libertarian Party. Wait, nope... told by the same person I can't rage vote either. Well... damn.
@PhotonEmpress OMG WTF LOL! I'm so glad to meet you here. :)
I'm attempting to be fussy about not proselytizing about @Mastodon on Twitter, but when someone mentions, I try to positively chime in with support if they want in or wish to stay out. May I DM you with one specific tweet I exchanged with someone who might appreciate your *specific* encouragement to consider joining Mastodon?
Or if you think it's better, perhaps I could simply link to something you've already posted about how signing up was for you, your initial impression of what you think the difference will be? (OMG, 65535 characters? What the hell?) What do you think will be the impact of your reach through here as opposed to Twitter? Do you think your presence here will mean you "have" to stop your Twitter presence? And do you have the sense that just maybe you won't have to fight so much here to justify your own existence? My god, that must become tedious and tiresome!
Anyway, so glad to see you here. I'm watching for Marcus House, Mama Doctor Jones, Howard Taylor, and a vast cast of really cool people to show up somewhere on here with things for me to follow via Mastodon. Cheers!
@abde Thank you for your time. Overall, the reason I doubt we are in a "simulation" is because there are so many incredible (if completely useless from a practical perspective) complex, interconnected relationships... and what would be the point for a game?
I think #dwarffortress has this to some extent... I've just not played with it recently. But of course, DF is on an entirely different level.
@JulienDelpierre I recognize the moral hazard of eating pigs and chickens. They are incredibly intelligent, more than we would want to give them credit for as food stock. I have my excuses, not worth boring people here. But we can certainly push for humane treatment of animal stock.
@aosinski https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/black-voters-are-so-loyal-that-their-issues-get-ignored/
"You can't not vote, that's apathy and shows you don't care at all.
You can't vote fascist, you'll lose your right to vote at all.
You can't vote according to your principles, because the time to vote your principles is when nobody cares and it just doesn't matter.
So you'd better hold your nose and vote blue, because what else are you gonna do? So your concerns and your voice can be ignored. Again. Just like every other time."
I guess for the Democratic Party it's a great thing I was of a mind to middle finger the Libertarian Party in rage rather than follow W. E. B. Dubois's example: http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/45a/298.html
I mean, it's not like I can expect the Pro Slavery Party to give their constituents any thought: https://apnews.com/article/prisons-california-gavin-newsom-minimum-wage-slavery-a0aed840fc6dc54c7eb0da98d0f6bb05
So cool! Go ahead and feel smug in how voting is just a strategy game for you that doesn't involve useless personal anguish. What's the point of having personal values in the face of The Collective, am I right?
@aosinski if it's a chess move, it's a game played out year after year only getting worse. It's a stupid game of choosing an evil not quite as bad as that other evil, and then we wonder why the result is still evil.
My vote was an expression of rage and anger for the whole works, a bitter salute with my finger of impudence towards the whole sordid mess. "love letter" doesn't begin to describe it!
