meta mastodon moderation / blocking

Wow - this is awesome. Now, I'm old enough to have been a moderator on Fidonet. And on IRC. Both the regular IRC and the one that ran as a backend to a huge social network (Sweden only) that was a bit like Facebook but long before Facebook. And some other things.

But the discussions on #fediblock regarding defederation are definitely bringing up a completely new aspect to network moderation I haven't really seen in this light before.

Me... regurgitating stream-of-consciousness brain vomit while her eyes roll into the back of her head and she goes into convulsions...

@mikmaqpeek: "Ok you can shut up now."

Disturbed by reports of Black Mastodon users—Black women in particular—having negative experiences on this app, including being randomly banned for discussions of racism. Some of these users will not come back. All will share their experiences. The answer is not to condescendingly lecture them on “how the fediverse works,” as if their experiences are inevitable, nor to swear to do better next time. (There may not be one.) It’s to do better now lest the reputation of this app be cemented.

@mergerson I'm passing this on to a black woman promoting to the black community. She's a hero in my book, and I'd love to see her here!

For those who care attached are the screenshots of the nazi who was banned from QOTO some time back and started a hate campaign by pretending to be LGBTQ ally "calling us out" but just made up lies... he did this over the course of many months and ultimately is the source of the problems that snowballed and led to all this to begin with.

I will do a write up on this soon.

@freemo

Thank you. @AutismFather has in the past been the target of attacks as his server is dedicated to autistic children playing . I am particularly interested he maintains his unique voice toward that end.

@trinsec

@freemo Like the frog said: time's fun when you're having flies!

@trinsec @AutismFather I would also note people like @freemo and some other inimitable people I follow are as "verified" as one can get in this venue, but they don't use "verified" in their handle. They don't need it. And that's how I think of you. But I'm still happy to see you making use of the web link verification for future incident proofing, as much as one can on this platform.

@trinsec @AutismFather I think that's the one that matters on Mastodon. I also think anyone, "verified or not" can put :verified: /:/verified/:/ in their handle, essentially making THAT pointless. But you are the only one who can use that link to the website you control, so my understanding is that is the one that matters.

@Blaergh I didn't know then how much a loss it was. After high-school, I was trying to get an Amateur Radio license and I saw the link between a sine wave and a circle. I felt then it was, "Huh! I wish I had seen that earlier, but math..." Now I'm 50+ wishing someone had seen my interests and challenged me to solve a problem involving my computer hobby that required grasping Trig and so on.

Lost opportunity. And at this point, it would have no use in my current profession and I couldn't open enough free time to delve into it. But I do have regrets.

Please, do keep fighting for the "me" that might have been.

@AutismFather I'm not terribly sure myself, I just know it's a "thing." I'm heading home early, so I can take a look and victimize myself, same as I abuse my own alts on my own server just to know how it works. One of the reasons annoys the hell out of me because it's so difficult to do alt testing. But I digress... I'll get home and see how to do.

Obviously, I welcome anyone else jumping in to help @AutismFather maintain identity to head off future issues by bad actors.

@Blaergh I love the math posts I love that this is a thing, it can be done. But I see the higher math beyond Algebra and go, "Blaergh!" Nothing personal, just the sound that comes out the back of my throat. Keep on, though... I need to expand my horizons, and I'm happier knowing it's being shared!

@AutismFather Welcome! And I am ecstatic to see you join us! It may be useful to look at means to verify your identity. I recall you mentioning this problem on the Bird Site and it would be great to head this off here before someone acts a fool!

Greetings! I am Stuart Duncan or probably better known online as AutismFather.

I created Autcraft, the server for children and their families in 2013 when I noticed many parents reaching out to other parents in hopes that their autistic children could play together because they were being attacked on public servers so much by bullies and trolls.

Since then, the server has added over 16,000 name to the list of approved players and been featured in many research papers, news articles, a TED Talk, and even Mojang's own "Meet a Minecrafter."

I started out with a diploma in Radio Broadcasting, became a writer about autism after my son and I were diagnosed, and then started my Minecraft server, where I finally found where I truly belonged and have been ever since.

I am most interested in helping people, but beyond that, , , , and in plain ole, simple, wholesome, kind videos and news. I try to look for the "good news" more than the bad.

A few links to give you a sense of who I am, if you're at all interested in learning more:

I look forward to sharing more about what I do but more so than that, I look forward to learning more from all of you.

Thank you for reading my message. Nice to meet you!

@Gargron What about addressing the situation with the silent delisting of qoto.org without warning, discussion, or reason, despite the organization meeting the charter agreement?
