The QOTO server gives you 65535 characters per toot, which makes around 36 standard printing pages :blobcatscared:

@SteveZissou Thank you for doing the math on that. I figured it would be pretty large but that is well beyond what you would need to write a blog even!

@freemo What does somebody from a different instance see if a post from qoto has more characters than their instance allows?

@freemo Oh, that could take up a lot of space hahah
With great power comes great responsibility I guess :D

@karlo @freemo I *think* they will see the first 500 (?) characters and then have a click-for-more link. Or is the "Read More" link something we can/should add manually?

@SteveZissou

And you can write in markdown that renders into html, 🙂

@freemo

As I often say these days, there’s bog . Then there’s qoto.org Mastodon, ;-)

@arinbasu

I am obviously biased but I think we have hands down one of the best servers on the fediverse. Drama is very rare here and when someone comes who does tend to start it they never last long. Amazing for an instance which doesnt limit the topics we are allowed to talk about and generally encourages free speech (hate speech not being free speech).

Its the first time I’ve ever seen a social media community actually work and get a long. I love it here.

@SteveZissou

@freemo @SteveZissou

You have set up an extraordinary server. And an ecosystem that can enable people to do and write good science on
Qoto.org is like of fediverse.

@freemo @arinbasu @SteveZissou I’m very new here, but must say I’m loving this server! Excited to be part of such a great community which is not something I’ve felt on social media before! 🤩

@DrK

It makes me really happy to hear that. Me and many others here have committed a lot of effort to try to have a community mature enough to talk and not fight, to be respectful and decent without the need for much if any censorship (there is always the occasional bad actor, but its rare).

Myself and im sure my fellow long-time qoto members all appreciate very much hearing that you feel safe and at home here, and most important, you are happy to be here.

I too think this is really a good decent server; if you check the local timeline, you will discover nice folks around. The editor is well designed, and this server actually allows you to integrate other federated tools, that's fantastic. I also found nice uptime and so on.

@DrK @freemo @arinbasu @SteveZissou
Me too! New and definitely out of my element on this server in terms of what you all bring to the table. Smart and thoughtful bunch here! It has been a fantastic experience and I am really enjoying being part of it all.

@MrsDi

I find just being STEM oriented really brings in a nice crowd... Being in the STEM world myself I am bias on this, but I always enjoyed the company of my fellow STEMies :)

But I think there is another aspect, QOTO has always had a big emphasis of "we wont censor you, but be respectful!".. Which has let us be an environment where you can talk about topics that often lead to fights in other contexts but here we amazingly tend to have very respectful and mature interactions anyway... I love it! It seems all the new people from twitter see that vibe and are going with it (its always concerning when there is a new influx in that regard)... so its really great to see that community dynamic being perpetuated and not dilueted.

@DrK @arinbasu @SteveZissou

@freemo @MrsDi @DrK @arinbasu @SteveZissou I am a newbie too (not though). I really appreciate all the post and hints as to how to conduct ‘business’ in here. Enjoying it way more than I should.

@arinbasu @SteveZissou @freemo I was also pleasantly surprised by QOTO's LaTeX support! Altogether a really cool set of features!

@jweile

Sadly there is a bit of a bug with our latext right now, but i have it fixed in the source already and am going to attempt a release this weekend.. if its successful latex should work smoothly again.

@arinbasu @SteveZissou

@freemo

That's great to hear! I did try to make a latex test toot earlier and noticed that bug.
Thanks for putting so much work into this!

@bioinformagic

Considering that we are comparing elephants and mastodons here we would need to go a bit more in details before depicting how big such a concert would be.

Based off the data found on Wikipedia a male mastodon had a max height of 3.25m, where as Asian elephants average at 2.75m and African elephants max out at 4m.

Now if we say a toot is dependent on the trunk length and the normal character amount on other instances is 500, then that would convert to 131.07 elephants. Though this assumes that we are talking about African elephants who are the same height as Mastodons.

If we calculate the trunk to height ratio for the living species we get 0.6364 for Asian elephants (trunk: 1.75m) and 0.5334 for African elephants (trunk: 2.1336m). Multiplying this with the height of the Mastodon will give us 1.7336 for African elephants and 2.068 for Asian elephants. Finally we will multiply the elephants by the ratio of estimated Mastodon trunk length to exist trunk length and this gives us about 107 African elephants or 155 Asian elephants.

So to answer the unasked question of “how many elephants are in the concert?” the answer is either 107 African elephants or 155 Asian elephants.
