All I want is perfect brain chemistry, and to see a coven of Bjorks doing witchcraft on the 7th ring of Saturn.

This one makes me laugh every year… because it is so very true.

Silicon Valley has a deep epistemological commitment to the idea that truth and plausible sounding bullshit are functionally equivalent.

It's become completely canonicalized by "fake it till you make it" factories like YCombinator becoming our industry's king makers.

The generative AI is wildly impressive and amusing, but also the product from the heart of the bullshit-is-truth nexus.

Why are railroads so profitable? Largely because they spend so little on labor. Even as profits have swelled, the industry rejected workers’ calls for sick leave, guaranteed time-off & more predictable schedules. If this isn't the epitome of corporate greed, I don't know what is.

A before-and-after for @BrentToderian - #BuchananStreet #Glasgow, pedestrianised in 1978.

Photos are 1961, via @PastGlasgow and 2018, via Google Street View.

Today, Glasgow City Council is proposing a "people first" area covering many more streets in the city centre.

Good news: the @eff replied to my email!
Bad news: they declined the idea of providing legal protection for Instance Admins for $10-$50 per month.
I will search out other viable options (hopefully international ones & not just North American & European solutions).

The bumpy earthworks of abandoned, rectangular house plots defined by ditches to the sides and back line both sides of the street. I had never seen such a thing--a massive field of sunflowers!

During sunflower season, this field at Colby Farm in Massachusetts is filled with people taking family pictures, senior portraits, and selfies. And then there are the arty types like me who are there for the landscape vistas, too. Bees are everywhere pollinating the flowers, and I've gotten some cool macros of them I'll share another day.

Is of more than historical interest? I'm having trouble motivating my programming languages students (and, frankly, myself).

@hist_myth

Very interesting, thanks! My knowledge is only that of an interested amateur in the West, taking for granted the whole "moon == menstrual cycle == female" thing.

@wihtlore @folklore @histodons

@wihtlore

Was this deity definitely seen as male? For a Moon figure, that seems unexpected...
