That makes sense, and it's a pity. It can be a satisfying occupation, especially if the person is motivated by the problem solving, new challenges and constant learning.

But it isn't for everyone. I have seen some of the programming challenges posted here by one user, and imagine that an average student in high school would not react well to anything needing that much focus, and understanding of abstract data structures. (in case we proposed simpler, but similar challenges to them)

I learned the basics of programming when all we had was pencil and paper, maybe a blackboard, to jot ideas and develop it. When you had enough laid out to start creating the program, you would write it, line by line, and parse thru to see if it made sense.

Processing it came later, not instantly by pressing a key to try to run/compile it.

Teaching programming in high school, students had a hard time tackling a similar challenge - writing a small routine on paper only, and verifying that it would likely work. Was surprising to me, but most of them felt it was hard.

Holla, es fué rapido sin duda, ja ja ja...

Casey está aprendiendo el Español, le dijo que se necessita, tú es fluente y gostas de charlar, no? 😉

@realcaseyrollins

@realcaseyrollins No es malo, se las personas te entiendem, eso es el más importante. Quizá @esperera_98 te daria unas lecciones? 😛

Yo también no soy muy fluente, pero la practica ayuda, siempre.

BlackFriday Toys, newly ordered

New Toy on the way... 😉

Wanted a smaller and lighter laptop for travel. I usually take an ipad mini tablet, have various laptops of assorted vintages but all a big larger and fragile.

Searched for an HP Elitebook 12" model, similar to my everyday workhorse 15.6" one, but not luck finding stock.

Worked on this yesterday, even drove out to nearby city to check a possible open box, sold out.

Today I got lucky, found a nice Thinkpad X230, very reasonable price, top quality and the lovely design I have enjoyed for years.

So, clicked the buttons, and it should arrive in a couple of days, next week. Yes!!

This is an off-lease, business class laptop. A good review here: laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/

The store I purchased from had some other excellent similar models, in larger sizes, some with great configurations.

With a new SSD upgrade, if they have old style hard drives, these machines are wonderful. Mine is coming with 8 GB of ram, and a 120 GB SSD, so storage is already cool.

@freemo My ancestors lived in Portugal, rural region, I don't know much farther than my grandfather's generation.

Do feel right at home when I visit, family has been there for ages. Centuries, millenia.

@freemo Wow, wonderful!

Imagine that, to be able to learn about ancestors going so far back. Luckily they were prominent, and figure in the registers and history text.

More common folks can't be traced so well, I imagine. Church records, but these are fragile and you might lose track easily. Congratulations, this is impressive.

@amiablenectar Ah, hello and welcome. 😸

Enjoy the network and all it has to offer. If you are new to using Mastodon, there's a good guide here: lifehacker.com/a-beginner-s-gu

Have a good day!

@freemo And he lived to 92 years old, in that time that's so rare. Wonderful.

@freemo That is so neat. To be able to trace your ancestor's history that far back, and that he probably had a very interesting life. Wow.

💚

@freemo @sda Rusty Latin, had to go look it up. Wiki has it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_homin

Quick quote:

"Ad hominem, short for argumentum ad hominem, typically refers to a fallacious argumentative strategy whereby genuine discussion of the topic at hand is avoided by instead attacking the character, motive, or other attribute of the person making the argument, or persons associated with the argument, rather than attacking the substance of the argument..."

I don't remember seeing this type of thing, sda.

Wouldn't want to get myself involved into it either. Feel free to use the Report button and let Staff know; or intervene in the thread and point that out, if you don't mind the possible reaction.

@mitchsotelo Well, that was good advice. Welcome to Qoto, Mitch. 😄

I have been here for less than a month, but it's been great fun. The intellectual stimulation from all the random content and discussions we get involved in, wonderful.

Facebook is a repetitive, annoying place. Twitter has more random content, but also a big number of nasties acting there, including paid troll farms, some abroad.

I imagine there's probably some in the US as well, it would be a great way to create employment in the dispossessed regions in mid country.

Have you used Mastodon before? I would recommend a good guide if you want to get familiar on how things work here:

Nice job on the user profile. A suggestion, feel free to hit Enter a couple of times and create a paragraph break anytime you want -- Unlike FB, it will not send the message away.

Would make for easier reading.

Any questions, please feel free to ask. :thumbsup_hmn_h2:

@freemo

Yes, I think Jeff said it well - the fist step in the road to improvement is to recognize there's a lot more to learn.

So don't despair, and be happy you have the curiosity to seek this knowledge. You will have a better understanding, do better work as a result of the learning you acquire.

The course you described above sounds excellent. I had programming courses ages ago, as part of my first year Engineering curriculum, but don't feel qualified to point the way into a scientific approach to education deeper into computer science.

I agree fully with your insight that the concepts should come before learning a specific language; or be taught along with the language, as a way to practice and produce test code.

Glad to see you engaging in this fascinating journey, Karl. Go for it! :thumbsup_hmn_h2:
