The following is a breakdown of how the new Moderated Group server works. If you want to start a group (becoming the owner and moderator for that group) you can sign up here: https://groups.qoto.org
This server is not intended for, nor does it support, regular user accounts. Its intended purpose is to host managed groups similar to https://gup.pe but adding the ability for a group to be owned and managed by an owner giving them the ability to mute, block, or silence misbehaving users as well as to make the group private so that only approved members can join.
The way it works is rather simple, similar to guppe anyone who makes a top-level post and tags the group’s account name will have their post added to the group automatically presuming they have permission to post to the group. By default groups are open and anyone would have permission to post to a group. These posts can be done as either public or unlisted, however DMs will not work as they lack the permission for other users to see it. If you wish to get group posts in your home timeline you simply follow the group, that’s all there is to it.
Keep in mind while all servers support groups, since it uses standard mechanisms to operate, not all servers will render groups in the same way. You will get the best group expiernce with an account on QOTO which has a unique feature whereby Groups are rendered and handled in a special way. There is a “Group directory” on QOTO, for example, that lists all groups discovered around the fediverse and lists them, ordered by how active they are. Also when you pull up the timeline for a group it renders in a way that makes group posts seem seamless. However if you are on vanilla Mastodon or some other server like Pleroma there isn’t any special handling for groups; that means posts made to a group will still show up in your home timeline but it will appear as a boost made by the group account itself. So functionally it still works. This is no different than how guppe works so the expiernce with guppe based groups is no different.
After signing up please consider going to the new accounts profile setting and selecting “List this account on the directory”. This will ensure that your group is discoverable and that other users around the fediverse can search for, find, and ultimately join, your group. Without this checked it will not show up in the Group Directory on other servers as well.
Moderation of the group by the account owner is not much different than a normal user account. You can mute, block, or silence users to limit their ability to see or post to the group as you see fit. Similarly a group can be made follower-only if you wish to restrict who can follow a group.
One important note, due to the special nature of a server devoted to groups a few features have been explicitly turned off to prevent abuse. A group account can not follow other user or groups, though it can be followed. As such there is also no home timeline. This prevents users from spam following to get followers to a group.
@freemo How do we do multiline codeblocks on kramdown? On fenced codeblocks, linebreaks are supposed to be taken as they are (“Since everything between the delimiting lines is taken as is, the content of a fenced code block does also not support hard-wrapping.” - https://kramdown.gettalong.org/syntax.html#line-wrapping), but in practice newlines get stripped out there too. Am I doing something wrong?

Elicit is a tool … that takes beliefs you have about future events and their probabilities, and turns them into continuous distributions that you can share with others.
If you think in probabilities like me, and struggle with having to translate that into natural language to communicate with others, this is a good tool for you.
@vim What is the smallest config change in Vim that’s had the biggest impact for you? For me it was reassigning ; (semicolon) to be the same as : (colon), making command mode that much easier to access.
(Second biggest is map - :up<CR>

If I can chip my humble 50 satoshis on this, African people have way higher genetic diversity than the rest of humankind, not having experienced the bottleneck from getting out of Africa.
It's easier, therefore, to find higher diversity of problems too, and the sampling can wildly affect the results of any research. Talking about "black people" or Africans is really like putting together all the rest of humankind, papuasians, native americans, latins, australian aborigenal people etc, and say "see, they have this and that".
My main point is, we can't talk about "African people" as a group and pretend it makes sense.
This is something that until more recent genetic discovery was not well known, so a lot of studies even from a recent past have a huge bias in that sense

I'm trying to be hopeful that she's actually okay and will be back (the tenses are all over the place in the last toot because I was trying not to put her in the past tense prematurely). Maybe she's just got some minor injury that needs rest, and will be back in a couple of days; maybe one of the other people that feed her decided to take her into their home. But it's harsh reality that dogs on streets have brutal and often short lives, especially non-aggressive ones like her.
Please give your time and aid to Humane Animal Society (https://hasindia.org/) or your local equivalent, they genuinely turn lives around, or even save ones that would have otherwise been lost.

She's always been unusually gentle for a street dog, shy and docile with everyone. My dad gave her the ironic nickname "bodybuilder/wrestler" (பயில்வான்) because she's so lean and averse to fighting (other than playfighting with her sister, which she did a lot of). We were trying to actually build that body up, making sure she got to eat her food without bother from other dogs, and to eat a lot of it. But as soon as she started allowing me to pet her, she requires at least thirty seconds of petting every time, before she would touch her food.

One of the street dogs we feed has gone missing for a couple days, and it's really worrying me. I've known for some time that street dogs have hard lives and meet with sudden injuries randomly, but somehow never imagined that happening to this girl in particular. I hope she's okay, and turns back up tomorrow shyly wagging her tail.
The moment I think that (Taskmaster's) Alex Horne is a genius, I can just type that into my phone and tell him that. How incredible is that! No messing with postcards and trying to find people's addresses and hoping they'd read it among the mountain of mail. Just instant reach to all sorts of interesting people, far away from you and far outside your usual circles.
Sometimes it's easy to take the Internet for granted, but we should really try not to - it's an amazing thing, with more potential than most of us use or give it credit for.

I love the Internet.
There I am jumping across instances reading angry political stuff and tech issues people are happy to have solved and world history discussions, and suddenly whoooops there's a community of diaper fetishists.
With their own particular fantasies, practical issues in the lifestyle, individual customs... there are whole worlds of Internet out there like this, thriving communities with their own lingo and in-jokes and concerns, about things I haven't given a minute of thought to. It was easier to stumble across these on the early Internet, before the filter bubbles, but they continue unabated whether or not we normies find them.
It was the only place where I didn't find any anger or hate though, only gentle self-expression and love, so they're doing great in that regard.
