@snder Hey what was the name of that federated chat service you use? I am testing out options (right now i have a mattermost instance up im looking at since it was already bundled with gitlab).

Has anyone here ever heard of or used scuttlebutt? Apparently its a decentralized social media network, in that sense it is like the fediverse. but it uses a totally different approach (gossip network).

I'm just now hearing about it and looking it up.

Website is here:

Am I the only one who feels its weird that we as humans have this unwritten rule that two people need to stick their genitals in each other in order to be candidates for raising a child. Many would assume that a marriage without romantic love would not result in as good a child as one that does...

But the more I think about it the more I think it shouldnt be so hard to be close with someone in a non-romantic sense and have enough emotional respect and enjoy each other company enough that it would be a wonderful environment.

But even without a kid in the picture this setup is unheard of. You just dont have two people who want to bond and live together and share a life if sex isnt in it, and good sex. Hell I've had that opinion myself at many times. But it just makes no logical sense, its not like humans cant go around having amazing sex with whoever they want, but again we just dont let that fly in this species I guess... humans are weird.

So I basically spent the better part of a week designing a whole framework for doing easier swarm certificate management because I wanted to implement this new feature right. Yea it was overkill for such a small feature, but this will make my life SO much easier moving forward.

New feature here at QOTO! We now offer free and automatic SSL certs for any websites you host at QOTO.

Aside from being free, opensource, and no data collection to host your site with us, we now offer free SSL certs too. Just use our gitlab instance to publish your website on our servers by simply marking a tick box when you set it up you can request an SSL certificate that will be automatically obtained and renewed via lets encrypt. You also have the option of using your own SSL certificate or no certificate at all when hosting from our site.

If you dont want to bring your own domain name we also provide you a free subdomain on *.qoto.io that will also be https under our own SSL certificate.

To get started just open an account on our gitLab instance:

git.qoto.org

For more info on this feature check out:

For information on using gitlab to host pages in general then check out this lengthier resource:

The QOTO PeerTube service is now back up and running again on newer and bigger hardware, check us out.

The QOTO discourse server is now back up and running at its usual address, but with all new, bigger, and better, hardware.

Great news, the QOTO services are starting to come back up on the new hardware/infrastructure.

So far our NextCloud instance ( cloud.qoto.org ) and our Gitlab instance ( git.qoto.org ) are both back up. Keep in mind things might go down in the next day or two as I continue to work on the infrastructure but backups are happening often so no worries.

I will continue to bring up the other services in the next day or so.

Our secondary services (not the social media part im posting on here) will be going down temporarily as we move to a new infrastructure. As each service comes back up the community will be notified from this account.

Thanks for your patience, this is a big move for us but everything has been backed up and will be back shortly.

After a week of working on re architecting the QOTO servers I'm mostly there. I had to write a whole new load-balancer from the ground up. The old one didnt work with docker-swarm.

The load balancer is now automated like before AND distributed. So basically I never need to worry about obtaining or configuring ssl certs or even fussing with nginx configuration. When i bring a new service up into the swarm I simply add some labels to the service and the load balancer I wrote will automatically detect it and rewrite its own nginx configuration, obtain new certs (or renew existing ones) and automatically route itself to the new service.

This was the bulk of the work, I put the source code up for it (its three containers) here for anyone who might want to steal it, I'll be documenting it and cleaning it up tomorrow:

git.qoto.org/modjular/swarm-pr

I also automated the process of bringing up new nodes in the swarm so I wrote a whole bunch of scripts for that in a separate repo (I'll share that tomorrow). So at this point its just a matter of actually bringing the services up in the new framework. So far I've tested it with two services and works great.

So starting tomorrow I can start migrating QOTO services to the new framework hopefully. Its amazing how easy this is going to make my life.
