what should i do with sunbeam.city? doxing is absolutely not tolerated on here, and the fact that the admin endorses it on "acceptable targets" (according to them) is something i can't stand behind.

i personally think an instance block goes too far, but perhaps a quarantine?

@snow

Some ideas:
- Try posting at different times of day. Not everyone is in the same timezone as you.
- Post about STEM subjects, or go to an instance tailored to what you want to discuss.
- Look at which hashtags are popular to see what topics might be interesting to a wider audience.
- Go back and delete your "if you like X, don't talk to me" posts.
- Participate in other threads to advertise your presence so others know to follow you.

Seconding @design_RG, good luck!

@design_RG

Perhaps but I think its more primal than that.. Its just a collective white-knighting syndrom. They feel if they are part of a community that bans others readily that means the community is "doing something" to enact change.. they feel like they are contributing to a good cause and dont bother to dig too deep to see if its justified or not because if they do they might realize THEY are the bad actors and the ones causing harm, that would destroy their entire world view.

@Kovaelin @mngrif

I just found out that Dissident Kitty is actively doxxing people now.

matrix07012 :thotpatrol:
What the fuck? I'm guessing Twitter leaks your email? I was wondering where these came from?

@freemo No matter what people discuss about Qoto on other instances, know that this is the friendliest instance I have been on with the coolest moderator. You're doing a great work, Dr. Freemo.

"Great minds discuss ideas; small minds discuss about other instances' policies."

jesus christ dissidentkitty is trying to dox matrix now
these people are actually dangerous

I've updated my Increasingly Less-Brief Guide to include a relatively little-known Mastodon feature that nonetheless is causing some big anxiety this week.

"So if I lock my account, only approved people can see my posts?", wherein I explain locked accounts and - here's the anxiety-inducing part - the RSS feed that *every* Mastodon account creates.

Nice to see all the chatter around on gave us a nice surge of new users.

These people really need to realize they are doing us a favor. The ones who start trouble do us the courtesy of isolating themselves from the network by blocking well-behaving instances AND actually advertise our instance all in the same breath.

On top of that our insularity and number of servers we federate still remains among the highest in the fediverse too!

We as a server try to do what is **right** and don't cave to peer pressure. It sometimes gets us into some trouble, there are some people who take it very personally when they realize they don't have power over another. But in the end most people see past it. While I am dismayed at the way a small minority acted yesterday I am refreshed by the results.

As far as I can tell far more people joined our server than the number of people who even engaged in the thread in the first place. Thats a win as far as I'm concerned.

those people who suggest block instance increase the divide of people.
I think the key to social media is about listening not speaking

@deltarae @freon @freemo @mngrif @tuxcrafting they're not going to bail the activitypub network because they wouldn't have anything to complain about

they like this drama. Have you seen these threads? People are enthusiastic about blocking instances - it gets more engagement than any other post they make, and for far less effort.

It's the perfect dopamine storm. The person who posts it feels like they're doing the right thing, and are vindicated when people boost it. The people who block the domain and cc their admin feel like they're doing the right thing by jumping on the bandwagon, and by being "proactive about safety".

People, who never were powerful on Instagram or Twitter or Tumblr, now control websites with thousands of people signed up. They're angry at how moderation occurred on those platforms so they want to prove how they can do better. And unlike those platforms, they get significant positive reenforcement for the actions they take.

So no, despite what they've said about going back to Twitter or making a new protocol (Parastat) they have no intention of doing any such thing. They're going to remain as a scourge on this network, discouraging people from joining due to the never-ending drama, fights, cancellations, etc. Eventually that might be overcome, I already feel like it is in a lot of places, but who knows.

Ultimately, the number one thing to do is NOT what @mngrif did. I get how it can be appealing to take the easy road but it's not the best one. Instead of moving to another instance to please the instance blockers, the people on the blocking instances should move to instances that do not block. While it's hard to convince people to leave their home on the Fediverse, show them what they're missing out on - and if they refuse to come along, so be it, it's their loss. There's no lack of good and interesting people who are willing to talk on here.

Instance block recommendation

@pizza fwiw misskey also has this feature by default, so what, are you gonna cancel all misskey instances as well
blame the protocol, not the protocol users

@DissidentKitty@sunbeam.city I dunno. Maybe ask the admin what's up with that. Oh wait, you can't because you have them blocked. :smug10:

BTW it's probably because you don't have authorized fetch enabled.

In most of europe if you have a chunk of metal and cut it up ina specific way you will get sent to jail for a very long time... Freedom isnt really one of their strong suits here but I do like the people :)

@Drew@radical.town Why does this upset you? I want pronouns that denote respect, same reason i use the gender pronouns other ask for, respect. Do you find this wrong? Do you not feel you would want to respect my pronouns?

@freemo

Agree. To become informed about our society you have to be open to the full spectrum of opinions, whether you agree with them or not. Only then you can sensibly decide what your own opinion is, and make it convincing for yourself before you start to try to convince others =)

I've never once blocked someone over a difference of opinion, and very rarely without talking to someone first to help resolve the issue.

Yet its not uncommon for others to block me through the course of a respectful post or comment, based solely on a difference of opinion.

In and of itself I dont mind that but what is particularly telling is that in every single case it is clear they dont even really understand what my position is or what my concerns are.

Take the most recent person who had an "episode" and blocked me at hearing I don't like bernie, didnt really even bother to ask why. Just a tirade and a block. But the reason is pretty reasonable: He promised military cuts and his proposed budget has much less than even a 0.1% reduction in military costs, among other things. But all he had to know is I dont like bernie, thats enough for him to make up his mind.

What these people dont get, and the point in me making this post is this: You are doing me a favor. I dont block people because, ultimately, I dont have to. The only people worth blocking are usually the people who are the ones doing the blocing after the first few words are thrown. Anyone who sticks around and have a conversation rather than block the first time someone disagrees, well i dont care what your opinion is, you've already earned enough of my respect that I'll hear you out.

Lets all hope Bernie doesn't get past the primaries, but if he does he will be destroyed. Best way to guarantee Trump will win. I know Bernie is the last candidate I would ever vote for, and this coming from someone who hates Trump
