@Science

Please know your philosophical razors if you dont already!

(taken from wikipedia):

  • Occam’s razor: Simpler explanations are more likely to be correct; avoid unnecessary or improbable assumptions.

  • Hanlon’s razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

  • Hitchens’s razor: “What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.”

  • Hume’s guillotine: What ought to be cannot be deduced from what is. “If the cause, assigned for any effect, be not sufficient to produce it, we must either reject that cause, or add to it such qualities as will give it a just proportion to the effect.”

  • Newton’s flaming laser sword: If something cannot be settled by experiment or observation, then it is not worthy of debate.

  • Sagan standard: Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

  • Popper’s falsifiability principle: For a theory to be considered scientific, it must be falsifiable.

  • Grice’s razor: As a principle of parsimony[disambiguation needed], conversational implications are to be preferred over semantic context for linguistic explanations.

"I use Linux as my operating system," I stated proudly to the unkempt, bearded man. He swiveled around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to mansplain with extreme precision. "Actually," he said with a grin, "Linux is just the kernel. You use GNU+Linux!" I don't miss a beat and reply with a smirk: "I use Abyss, a distro that doesn't include the GNU coreutils, or any other GNU code. It's Linux, but not GNU+Linux."

The smile quickly drops from the man's face. His body began convulsing, he foamed at the mouth, and he dropped to the floor with a sickly thud. As he writhed around he screamed, "I-IT WAS COMPILED WITH GCC! THAT MEANS IT'S STILL GNU!" In a cool fashion, I replied "Abyss uses the LLVM compiler suite, GCC uninvolved."

With a sickly wheeze, the last of the man's life was ejected from his body. He lied on the floor, cold and limp. I've womansplained him to death.

@freemo I don’t think he still believes whatever he said in 1977, but yeah this kinda sucks. I think its tricky to judge peoples opinions from the past using current norms.

@lucifargundam Actually bought Monero using Bitcoin. I like that it's not transparent as Bitcoin is and it could be more challenging for my sister to withdraw as fiat money. I traded at Binance. (Currently self-quarantining so didn't want to go out).

Bought crypto for my sisters birthday. If she manages to withdraw it its all hers.

@duponin I use Lisp (Racket) for programming language design / semantics and I think that's perfect use case for this language. Guile is great too as a go to extension language, but yeah most of the time you are not learning Lisp to apply for a job. ๐Ÿ˜„ Its more of a fun experience.

@freemo Yeah Jo looks kinda cool.

We will see I think that's the reason why the Michigan flipped so strongly. Additionally, covid could be the reason why dems are voting by mail a lot. They are for sure more afraid of going out to vote than republicans. Just a speculation.

@freemo Yeah I thought so. Did you vote independent at the end? I think that mail-in votes are going to lean towards dems heavily, because of all that massage about them beying fake from Trump.

@khird @LittleWytch Git itself is distributed, but open source repositories are mostly centralized at Github. Imagine multiple fedi instances where forks can be done between them. You can communicate issues. Send merge requests. Use your account to create repositories at other instances. For example school and personal instance (i dont know if this is possible). I know this is an utopian scenario, but still an interesting idea nonetheless.

@LittleWytch That sounds like a neat idea. Do you think about implementing it?

youtu.be/SbTQJGxk95o this is so funny. Comparing 1984 to bird site what a stretch. And I love how G. Orwell is depicted as anti-left when he was democratic socialist a talked mainly about totalitarianism (this was mostly done in my country I don't know how he was depicted elsewhere).

@koyu@koyu.space @jordan Ah okay I am not really versed in desktop app development. I was talking more about the server-side programming where Linux shines. I use Windows only for gaming or when I want to play with my midi controller.

@koyu@koyu.space @jordan Linux is perfectly fine for development (I would even say better than windows). So your email and browsing take is little bit off.

Its a 1 in a 1,000,000 chance you will get hit by a meteor in your lifetime. Even less likely it will happen today.

So, what is the chance that at some point today something, anything, will happen to you that has a 1 in a 1,000,000 chance of happening or more? In other words, how often does a day go by where something nearly impossible happens... well, the answer is it is pretty much guaranteed.

In fact every moment you are experiencing countless events that have a one in a million chance or more of happening. Try and wrap your head around that :)
