You look more sober at the end of the party than you did on the way there.
Note: Although Nichelle Nichols (as Uhura) was a character in Star Trek, in the particular episode featured here in this series, she only had a bit part. (Plus that one was not a movie, it was TV.)

Retro SciFi Movie of the Week...
I, Robot (2004)
This is the only movie so far in the “Retro SciFi Movie of the Week” series that has a black character in it. I had to come all the way up to the 21st century to find it. So this film is not very “retro”, although the original story is from the mid-20th century.
Black people are even more under-represented in science fiction films than they are generally in Hollywood.

Energy saving tip number 8
Choose a zero-energy home…
Zero-energy or ultra-low energy buildings are designed so that, on average, they require little or no energy. It is much easier to design a zero-energy home from the beginning than it is to try to upgrade an existing home.
Using techniques such as earth sheltering, super-insulation, high-efficiency windows, seasonal thermal storage, and other techniques, a building can be designed that requires no additional energy for lighting, heating and cooling. Solar panels can provide the energy required to run appliances and other devices.

Thanks for the correction. I was going to write "room-temperature superconductors", but I changed it at the last minute thinking that I wanted to include those colder than room temperature (that actually exist today), but I guess my mind couldn't seem to write "high-temperature" when I was thinking lower temperature.
Addendum to the hypocratic oath for cardiologists.
I have to come to the defense of Ms. Brennan here…
Margaret Brennan is perhaps the most competent news anchor in the business. I’m sure she meant to say “a mile a second”, which would be at the threshold of hypersonic speed. The phrase, “a mile a minute” is an old expression which goes all the way back to the early railroad days, when a train was the fasted vehicle around. It was even faster than a pony express rider. So the expression “a mile a minute” was used for over a century to mean “fast.” I’m sure Ms. Brennan is well read in history and knows that, and that’s how that phrase got crossed up in her neurons.
Also, “a mile a minute” is alliterative, which forms stronger neuro-links and is more likely to be followed by the language processing centers in the brain than a non-alliterative phrase such as “a minute a second.”
Isn’t neuro-linguistics fun (and sometimes embarrassing)?
Still, reporters on average, usually struggle with math and science topics.

US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin says that Putin’s deliberate targeting of civilians in Ukraine is “really disgusting”. He says the use of chemical or biological weapons by Putin would prompt a significant reaction from the US and the global community..
Margaret Brennan says Russia is now using missiles that travel “a mile a minute”.
>"That's the smallest subtitles ever. :P"
Yeah, they're readable on a large screen, but certainly not on something like a handheld mobile device.
There's no sound on this gif video, and the dialogue from the original source was mostly unrelated to the images shown. (It was a teacher talking in the background.)

Energy saving tip number 10
Invent the next breakthrough in energy…
Changing our behaviors to conserve energy can help with the immediate needs of this particular energy crisis, but a major breakthrough in energy could end oil wars permanently.
Consider working in STEM fields that work to develop new energy sources. If you work for the petro-fuels industry, consider switching careers to new energy. The industry is dying and you don’t want to get stuck with an obsolete resume.
Be aware that the petro industry aggressively works to sabotage the new energy industry, including infiltration of research projects and setting up trojan companies that work to undermine development of new sources of energy by sucking resources from legitimate R&D. For example, companies that say they are developing hydrogen fuels for transportation are very often working on behalf of the oil industry.
But there are many areas of legimate research. Areas of active research and development include...
- Commercial fusion energy
- Low-temperature superconductors
- Improved solar cell efficiency
- Grid energy storage technologies
- Improved electric batteries
- New generation fission reactors that are safer and more sustainable
- Efficient heat engines, waste heat recovery, and other efficiency improvements
- Electric vehicles

To paraphrase Churchill -- Indeed, it has been said that capitalism is the worst form of economic system except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.
(I had an extended conversation with @freemo on this topic last year sometime, but I can't find the thread at the moment)
1. Take the battery out of your smoke detector.
2. Don't cook with oil. (also, the smoke from oil is really harmful to your lungs.)
3. If the problem is oil smoke and you still want to use oil, turn down the temperature and switch to safflower oil (which has a higher smoke point).
The best actor in this film was Susan Cabot. It turns out that she had an eventful and tragic life, including severe mental illness, an affair with King Hussein of Jordan, and a horrible death.

There’s a new burger made from the bodies of mothers and babies killed in Ukraine.
It’s called the MacBeth burger.

A sneak peek at an upcoming Retro SciFi Film of the Week…
Ok, a citizen social scientist. (Admittedly a soft science.)
There was an awful lot going on between men and women at that time in US history. When the men when off to war, the women took over many of the jobs that, until then, were considered “men’s work”. When the men came back after the war, everyone quickly paired up and started making babies, and the women were forced to leave their jobs and go back to being “housewives”. This was the Baby Boom.
A lot of women resented being forced back into the role of homemaker, and this soon lead to the nascent women’s liberation movement. Also, at the time of this particular film, it was about a decade after the end of the war. Couples were now young families, usually with multiple children in those days, which is a time in the life of a marriage when men begin to wander. There was even a movie at that time titled “The Seven Year Itch” (1955).
So, although the phenomenon of spouses cheating on one another is older than our species, it was particularly an issue at that time.
But, as I said, I need to re-watch the film and re-evaluate it before I can make any real judgments. Also, many times the surface plot of a film is merely a metaphor for something else, which can often really only be discerned by watching the film.
In that case, I'll be sure to unlearn this quote...
I'm just a geek.
Pronouns: She/Him/Her/His
(Use "she" for the subjective case, "him" for the objective case, "her" for the active possessive case, and "his" for the passive possessive case. Note: This is to avoid non-PC objectification and passivity.)
