I think they're referring to dead links (link rot).

The internet archive is used to store web contents, so if the contents were archived before the web site at that link went down (or before the contents were otherwise removed for the link), then a link to the archived site should still have it. But if the link was archived after the contents "rotted" then it would have the contents at that point (or an error message).

last clue: hide it in plain sight

I really can’t add anymore hints without just revealing the whole thing, so let me just repeat some of what I’ve already said… (in order)

“Come on, it’s simple…”

“...the password. But I said it was simple….”

“...the password. Is that simple?”

“I say that it’s simple...”

“...password. It is simple...”

“(That’s a big hint.)”

“...password, (because it’s simple...”

“...’simple’. Is the password...”

“...something that can be easily guessed?”

guessing...

- higher elevation means lower pressure

- as the elevator descends, pressure increases within the elevator shaft below and decreases above

- as the elevator descends, the air inside the elevator experiences less gravity (due to the equivalence principle) so the pressure near the bottom decreases and the pressure at the ceiling increases

- and visa versa...

Two Democratic bureaucrats remove five Republican candidates (who did nothing wrong) from the primary ballot for governor in Michigan.

The US used to be a democracy.

@trinsec

I don't mean to brush you off. You each had the same reaction, so it must have been my joke.

@mur2501 @cweickhmann

@mur2501

>"240V 60Hz brushing leads to the whitest teeths"

I'm getting my home wired for 400V 3-phase so I can have the brightest teeth.

Now I just need to find a 400V electric toothbrush.

@trinsec @cweickhmann

@mur2501

>"I have never seen a toothbrush made of metal irrespective of electric or not"

Neither have I. I was trying to make a joke, but it fell flat.

@trinsec @cweickhmann

A viewing tip for those of you who have not seen it before...

Make sure you are not in a hurry when you watch it. This film progresses very slowly. There are no real action sequences or anything like that. If you're used to seeing modern scifi with lots of space battles and rapid cuts, you'll really need to slow down for this one. It's deliberate and pensive. Just think of it as meditation or something, and take your time.

p.s. - In case you haven't heard, this is the greatest science fiction film ever made.

>"What I was referring to is the obsession with Nikola Tesla-style "wireless power" instead of HV wires."

Yeah, I don't understand why people get these conspiratorial ideas -- like the power utilities wouldn't be all over that if it was true.

I just thought of another way to transmit power through the air. Just ionize the air molecules so that air becomes conductive -- lightning.

@mc

That’s important for real-time applications like robotics and driverless cars. It’s the key to cypher algorithm development because determining whether cyphers are considered secure is based on the time it takes for a brute-force attack to crack them. When a cypher algorithm is “broken” it’s just because some clever mathematical way to find the key has shortened the time to an unacceptable level. Some hash algorithms are specifically designed to be time-intensive so that it makes it more difficult to conduct a dictionary attack.

When you layer the concept of general relativity on top of computational time complexity, then it’s really complex, i.e., computational time in satellites like GPS satellites that must also take into account the reduced gravitational field in orbit, which makes their clocks tick faster than clocks on Earth.

>”*for life, the universe, and everything”

Yes, time’s scope is immense.

@stux

I'm finding more and more often that people seem to not know things that I thought everyone knew. I think it's because of "information silos" where people don't seek out other sources of information and miss things.

In school, they used to teach certain classic areas of knowledge in history and literature, but now they don't do that any more. Also, young people, who may be in those "silos" may not realize the scope of what they don't know.

@stux

Wait until he learns about Noah and his ark!

@stux

That was a young person, so it may be that he actually never heard of Moses. Especially when media sources are so fragmented now. His choices of friends and media may have prevented him from learning that.

I guess he knows now.

@Co

I don't know anything about this, but I'd be interested in following/learning about it.

Plus I like butterflies.

One of the most effective ways to reduce preventable deaths is to wear a respirator.

If just 40% of Americans had done that, we could have saved a million lives.

>"The post office implies the existence of a pre office."

And a now office. (or current office).

almost a spoiler...

Speaking of time (qoto.org/@Pat/1083737702798867)...

I never noticed this before, but I now believe that Kubrick's deliberate pacing in 2001 may have been to make the audience more aware of time, which was a key component of the message in the film.
