@AmpBenzScientist

I don't understand this in reference to computer science, but before you tooted this I had thought of the before-and-after phrase, "Cloud Atlas Shrugged".

Both of them being complex works dealing with human nature, yet diametrically opposed in their philosophical conclusions.

Spoiler: revelation about this clip...

After I posted this toot and clip, I realized that this particular clip has much more significance than I had realized.

Obviously, for those who have seen the film, the voice-over dialog by Sonmi is about her becoming "woke" about her own oppression and her potential. However, what I hadn’t previously realized is that this particular point in the film is a narrative midpoint, about which the film pivots, presenting a mirror between the first half and second half of the film. The first half introducing the six separate but similar sub-narratives, while the second half mirrors the first, but resolves those initial sub-plots in a reflective manner. The dialog itself hints at this, “Knowledge is a mirror, and for the first time in my life I was allowed to see who I was… and who I might become.” Sonmi’s character is acting a transient meta-metaphor for the film itself – realizing what the (first half of) the film is and what it will become.

This film is amazing. You can take as far as you want...

If you're not concerned with privacy, you could put them on your own public server and let google's spider crawl through them and then use google's public image recognition/search.

Retro SciFi of the Week…

Cloud Atlas (2012)

Not so retro, but it’s one of the best science fiction films ever made and aside from ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, perhaps the very best. It includes an ensemble cast of some of the most accomplished actors in the world.

The breadth and depth of this film is enormous and the quality is completely uncompromising. It uses a nonlinear narrative (lots of flashbacks and flashforwards) with an intricate plot and the actors play multiple roles, so it may be confusing on first viewing. This film demands a lot work from the viewer – it will probably take you at least three viewings to begin to understand it. If that’s not your thing, then I’d recommend you go watch ‘Sharknado (2013)’ instead.

The primary philosophical conclusion reached by the film is absolute bunk, but that doesn’t detract from its story and entertainment value. (And the presentation of its thesis up to that point is sound.)

@aworldinpages

Depends on the style. If it's dialogue, it depends on the character, too. Those 'greats' may be useful in context.

@trinsec

I've seen powered versions of these. You just pull a trigger and the thing snaps off the branch.

(That one looks like it's been around awhile.)

@aworldinpages

Yeah, descendant.

Only specify the number of generations and gender if it is required.

Also, depends on the writing style and rhetorical mode.

@icedquinn

wp had a long discussion some years ago about whether or not to include spoilers in film articles and they decided that their mission of sharing info would predominate. So the spoilers stayed in their articles.

So the lesson is: don't read about movies on wp until after you've watched them.

What really pisses me off is streaming sites that put major spoilers in the promo blurbs.

Or even spoilers in the movie trailers. That sucks.

@freemo

>"More specifically it is about the quantum observer effect."

Yes, “you need to be very observant".

I found out where that meme character came from...

He is from a children's TV show that ran in Japan between 1959-1988, kind of a Japanese Sesame Street. The show was syndicated in Latin America in its final years and, according most sources, that dubbed version of the show is where the actual meme images came from, which first appeared in Spanish-speaking social media.

Here is an episode from the show…

@gbraad

I don't know enough about that, if cargo is usually inspected anyway, or how long the delays are.

@gbraad

Well, they won't have to do an airlift, just a "sealift".

@gbraad

Kaliningrad is not completely blocked via rail. It's only for shipments of sanctioned items.

Putin knows that any move against Lithuania means WWIII, so it's highly unlikely he'll do anything provocative against a NATO member.

They also still have full access via the Baltic Sea. If they try anything, they will immediately lose that sea port (and eventually all of Russia itself).

As I said, I don't understand that specific character, but the joke is about the double-slit experiment.

@freeschool

Yes, I'm sorry it took a while to respond to this one. I got distracted but later something reminded me about it so I went back to respond to it.

Sometimes I'm just away from qoto for awhile or whatever, so...

@freeschool

I can tell from your toots here on qoto that you are a thinker. So I did a short, somewhat ambiguous, yet related toot so you could just think about it. I hope you enjoyed thinking about it. That's why I did it.

Most of my toots have meaning to them, sometimes very deep meaning, that can only be ascertained with some consideration. And my humor is very dry. Sometimes I put an emoticon in there to indicate the humor -- like with my solstice toot -- but often I just leave it and if folks see the humor, then they see it and if not then that's okay, too.

I don't always understand your toots but I take away from them what I can.

@cobratbq @freemo @funny @Science

I didn't get this at first. You need to be very observant.

I've seen that character around before but I have no idea who or what it is or what it means, or its origins. Can anyone fill me in?
