@YuriBrave @Robotbeat I mostly plan to see what has the greater pull for time. I watch for posts from particular people on Bird Feed, but as they come here I don't need to anymore.

@skanman @torq I am totally with you both on this. In a discussion with someone on Bird Place, I used yourlogicalfallacyis.com to show the fallacy I observed. "Oh no! You're not gonna trot that out on me! I was captain of the debate team in college!" Never did actually address the fallacy I observed.

Formal logic simply isn't taught at the common level, and it certainly isn't used in common debate.

@freemo My dad coauthored a book on vacuum tubes and their replacements. Not exactly a page turner unless you needed the info. He worked for Howard W. Sams Publishing. I remember growing up to him screaming "!"

@Pat You can see it in the eyes: "I hate you, and I will barf in your slippers tonight."

I don't use ions in my professional life, but that would be a fantastic way to remember it!

Is this how it works? I'm testing, because I'm not sure this is how it works.

"Whatcha doin?"
"I'm loving my wife."
"Ew! TMI!"
"No, really! I'm washing the dishes."
"That doesn't sound particularly romantic."
"She's ill. I know she's not feeling her best, and tidying the kitchen is one real way I can tell her how much I love her."
"Aww... that's sweet!"
"Plus I enjoy making lewd small-talk while I..."
"LA-LA-LA I"m outta here!"

@stux I must forward this to my wife. We need this!

@outofcontrol Pre-generating chunks around your base area is generally a healthy plan to keep down lag issues. The downside: once generated, changes with Minecraft update such as new ores, new trees, or whatever... won't generate in new chunks. For *THAT* ... have Chunky "trim" chunks around your base. That would be one way to "recycle" maps while keeping your original base intact. :)

@outofcontrol My "general hazy understanding" of Paper is that it's a fork of Spigot, but otherwise SpigotMC plugins will work fine except where it is noted as part of that given plugin.

With either mapping software, if the chunk isn't generated, it can't map it. You *can* have 16x16 block "chunk holes" in your map as you explore. Minecraft chunk generation can behave strangely. Forcing those chunks to generate would be Chunky's claim-to-fame. It also helps lag because chunk generation is intense. Once done, you won't have lag from making new chunks already generated.

@outofcontrol You can use Chunky to pre-generate chunks out to a distance first, and it takes time of course. Then you can have Bluemap render in its turn, but it is best you do *NOT* have both rendering at the same time. It will make both take forever, and you'll have mega-lag.

@outofcontrol spigotmc.org/resources/bluemap is the one. It also renders a 3D top-down view, if you would like.

Also, consider spigotmc.org/resources/chunky.. The problem "might not" actually be Dynmap. It could be chunk areas not created, so they can't be rendered. I couldn't be sure without poking about with the server, DynMap's configuration, and such. Chunk can both pre-generate chunks and "trim" chunks beyond a defined border.

I believe you can use Spigot plugins with PaperMC. I'm not clear on the details, I use SpigotMC. I would be glad to help as best as I can.

@outofcontrol I've used Blue Map... I'm at work, but I can get you the SpigotMC link from home.

Guide to Content Warnings

On qoto, the only toots that require a content warning (CW) are:

- Spoilers
- NSFW (Not Safe For Work) – this is up for interpretation, but I assume refers to tits and dicks
- Using a derogatory epithet or racially charged language in a toot that itself is not racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise hateful speech (such as quoting a passage from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn for critical purposes)*

Other reasons someone may want to use CW’s here on qoto:

- Strobe effects (to avoid triggering an epileptic seizure in people who are susceptible)
- Violence, accidents, rape, suicide, self-harm, death, etc., including to non-human animals (PTSD, etc.)
- Food (pics of food can prompt people with metabolic syndrome, eating disorders, which are relatively common)
- Pics of drugs (may trigger use by people who are addicted)
- Very long posts (so uninterested readers don’t have to scroll through them)

It’s better if the CW description is more specific (without itself containing CW-eligible content). Instead of just “Spoiler”, say “Spoiler – The Wizard of Oz”. Also, it’s generally a good idea to repeat the CW description within the toot itself at the top of the toot for those who may have the auto-open feature enabled.

What doesn’t need a CW:

- swear words
- content that might hurt someone’s feelings
- unpopular opinions
- political content
- pictures of animals (that are alive and well)
- content from those with autism or who are otherwise neuro-atypical
- using the CW as a title or heading for your toot or trying to place actually content into the CW description is irritating for others

Overuse of the CW feature ultimately undermines it’s usefulness because it forces people to have to click on each toot or just enable the auto-open feature. However, someone with a condition like epilepsy or PTSD, the auto-open feature is not really an option so CW overuse effectively forces people with disabilities to click each toot while everyone else can just enable the auto-open feature, which doesn’t seem fair.

Other Mastodon instances have varying rules and views on CW use.

Note: I’m not an admin or moderator here, this is just my opinion. I don’t always adhere to these guidelines and you can do what you want.

* This epithet restriction isn’t listed in the rules, but it was adopted as a compromise in response to some specific events. Of course hate-based speech such as sexist, racist, homophobic or anti-trans speech will not be tolerated. (Note: I personally block anyone who uses epithets in any context because the intent is often ambiguous and you can communicate the same info without explicitly using the epithet.)

On #TwitterMigration and Grief

I’ve read about fears some Mastodon folks are experiencing with the influx of Twitter people. I’m doing my best to hold space for that experience, be respectful of unfamiliar norms, and encourage others accordingly.

I want also to hold space for the mourning of people coming from Twitter and ask that we receive the same grace. Contrary to its reputation here, Twitter has been a community of support for me and many of my followers.

Change always involves loss 💜
