@themaikimo How does this logic not lead to the imposition of authoritarian zero Covid policies like we observe in China?

There is a balancing of concerns that must go on and how each society strikes that balance is open to discussion, but to say that there exists an obvious right path forward bases on foundational ethical norms is, in my humble opinion, an unhelpful oversimplification.

@freemo @Gargron @trinsec @khird this is frustrating, but I would recommend some patients. I choose this instance because it had a sustainable moderation scheme. Many others basically came down to "we all love each other and we will kick off anyone we don't like." With the rapid growth in this space it will not be long until there is some controversy that divides the community. When it comes, Qoto will have a robust policy in place while the Love-and-harmony people will struggle with conflict resolution.

As the new owner of another place is discovering content moderation is hard, nuanced, and not something a community of any scale will agree on. Admins who operate with moral absolutes are going to get run over.

So it seems joinmastodon removed QOTO from their directory without cause, without contacting us, and without any discussion or due diligence.

Since this is the only way to actually find QOTO for new users if it isnt reversed soon it could mean the end for our wonderful community.

If you care about this place remaining fair, respectful, and inclusive environment I highly suggest everyone reach out to them annd voice your objecttion and your disapointment and having no procedure to keep this fair and inclusive.

If you want to see QOTO stick around you can email your objecttion here:

hello@joinmastodon.org

Feel free to CC me here: jeffrey.freeman@qoto.org

Please be respectful, we want to show them we are the good guys and not give them any reason to object.

Congratulations are in order for @scottagunn who has been elected to be a deputy to

People grumbling that #Mastodon is slow at the moment... You just turned up with 1 million people in a tiny, rural village and you're complaining there's a queue to get into the only tearoom, which is run by gay pensioners Babs & Maureen as a retirement hobby on Mons-Weds. Relax!

@Robminchin please tell me you have seen Tom Scott's YouTube video on time and time zones.

#mastodontips When you're posting a multi-message thread, make the first message in the thread "public" and the others "unlisted." That will keep the follow-up posts from showing up in people's feeds, but they'll still be able to read them when they click into the first message.

(Credit @kyonshi for the idea, but with all the new users, I wanted to get it out into the wild.)

@youknowkempa I don't know how Jones picked up the label "progressive " but it is a real stretch. He merely made an effort to run to the left of Ashby. (At least when he wasn't trying to run here over with the proverbial bus.)

So, due to a miscommunication, I've ended up with a spare BSides London ticket. Free to a good home as long as you promise to use it!

@CiYue @lupyuen You stars by imposing immutability on the elements and using a copy-on-write scheme.

One thing I learned during 35 years in education: there are plenty of educators, and a vast majority of curriculum leaders, standards writers, etc. who vastly underestimate students’ interest in and capacity to learn about and potentially solve complex problems.

@llebrun I would like to see the panic as the people who consistently remind everyone that Twitter is a private company can set its own content moderation policy without regard to the Freedom of Speech would suddenly realize that a Public Uitility Twitter would be subject to the full force of the first ammendment. Twitter really would become the public square and people like Donald Trump and the Proud Boys would have the absolute right to speak there.

Every time some new church leader comes in and talks a big game about how we've got to make big changes and those who don't like it need to get out of the way, I feel like a Twitter engineer getting an email from Elon Musk.

@kairyssdal No, this will not be the slow quiet death of attrition like MySpace. This will be a spectacular explosion a la Lehman Brothers. Chapter 7 bankruptcy and an army of auditors will be involved.
