@freemo

Is that on the MacBook you were loading Arch Linux on yesterday?

Looks nice, although the R&M characters in black look a little sinister. 😃

@eletrotupi

@avatarashakti Hello, and welcome to Qoto.

Enjoy the network and all it has to offer. If you are new to using Mastodon, there's a good guide here: lifehacker.com/a-beginner-s-gu

We also have another new users guide, posted here : write.tedomum.net/rgx/suggesti

Casey Rollins made a video to explain the Fediverse, here :

** I noticed you tried to use the html code to verify your URL in the profile -- but the idea is that you include that snippet of code inside a webpage that you own and can edit. Then enter that page's URL in the Preferences here.

If the page you linked to has that little code strip, it will verify you own the URL and show a green check-mark in the profile.

Have a good day!

@sbjohnsrpi Thank you Samuel for reading the article and for the comments. Glad you liked it.

I think that more localized instances serve a purpose, build community, help preserve and practice languages even. I just came back home and have been going thru the various open tabs I keep with the different instances, one of the most active, considering the number of users, is a localized instance, in Brazil, where posting happens in Portuguese, not a very common language in the Fediverse so far.

Given that it is possible to start an instance either individually or with a small organization, coop or similar guiding it, it's not had to see these happening.

On chosing the right instance, we got to hope that people get lucky on which they land on when first arriving here - mine was Qoto, picked from the joinmastodon.org, based on the description and theme. A month later or so I joined mastodon.social and had the impression it was a bit overwhelming, for me, let alone a new user.

If I had first landed there, likely I would not have stuck around for more than a couple of days - and not knowing there are alternatives, migth just written off the whole Fediverse experience.

And I just discovered that our many friends who have a home at the mothership (m.social) can't really see the awesome Cat Posting Bot @catpostingbot

...since m.s blocks the pawoo.net instance media. Sorry guys. (Just looked at the instance front and can understand the reason.)

Here's a nice pic just posted by CPB.

A really well made page that introduces and explains the Pleroma site's Front End to new users.

Pleroma can also be used with a Mastodon Front End, or FE for short, easier for users who are already in mastodon instances.

I like the project a lot -- many nice ideas and fresh air, they are pushing the envelope while in many places, getting a Maximum Toot Size larger than 500 characters is already an unacceptable request (been there, tried that, denied. Twice.)

@Sphinx The short code they show is how you would use the emoji once it's installed in a particular instance.

If it's not there on Qoto, it wouldn't display the emoji image. If there are some you like and would like to have them here, save them each to a small .png file and ask our admin, he can add it to the system -- like the :sad_cat: -- which I personally requested and provided the source image from another place.

"BeOS: The Alternate Universe’s Mac OS X"

A nice article by Erin Pinheiro just posted on Hackaday.com. Recommended reading for anyone interested in UI and system design, Op Systems, evolution of comp tech.

hackaday.com/2020/01/09/beos-t

"Meet The BeOS
Could you imagine emailing someone a video file in 1995? Be Inc. did.

BeOS was, at the time, a foray into a new way of doing home computing. The features it introduced that were brand new at the time are now ubiquitous — things such as preemptive multitasking, journaling filesystems and an uncluttered desktop design.

In a way, it was forward-thinking enough that if you look at a screenshot of it today you’d swear it was just any other modern Linux environment, ’90s graphical aesthetic aside. "

@rvlobato Thanks for the post, Ronaldo. I was surprised to find out recently, and confirming myself, that Microsoft is allowing an upgrade for Window 1 or 8.x systems directly into Windows 10, and the resulting install will have a digital license and be activated normally.

As long as the original O.S. was activated, it will work. I upgrade a Windows 7 Home Premium laptop to Win 10 Home. A desktop Windows 8.1 Pro system became Win 10 Pro, both installs were easy and no problems.

Surprising, since officially this free upgrade path had been discontinued in July 2016.

@pschwede @DracoMagister Congratulations to the Dragon Master! First day in, splash. 😉 🍷

You like emojis?

Like, REALLY like them? How about 7,315 of them? All in one instance, no kidding.

See them, get them, download the whole set at : fedimojis.feuerfuchs.dev/fedi.

@mngrif @neauoire Fermentation, it has a lot of sugar, and should be kept refrigerated once opened. That is probably written in package too, no?

@freemo That's a nice machine to be left orphaned. Glad it's getting some love again! 😃

@yashrajg1322 Hello Yashrajg,

A suggestion if I may - maybe you could include a bit more information in your post. I nromally would be skeptical of clicking on a link from someone unknown, posted in a forum by a new user.

But being a moderator here, it's my duty to check, and I did visit your site. Got this info from the About Us :

And it seems ok, not obejctionable. Best if you told people what you are offering, and then the link, in my opinion.

Thank you, and enjoy the Fediverse.

@peterdrake LOL.....

Love Him or Hate Him, usually someone deserving notice. Well done, Peter.

@realcaseyrollins That is an interesting decade to study in general, and in American History has a lot too.

- election and government by Pres. Kennedy.
- Cuba Missile Crisis, the closest we got to the Cold War turning VERY HOT. (near firing of nuclear headed torpedos in fact, by a Russian sub who was being blasted by US destroyer with depth charges.
- resolution of said crisis, as seen in film and book form.
- assassination of Pres. Kennedy, a great tragedy.

And so much more.

@pschwede @Lyudmila congratulaciones! Tu estoria cerca de José Murillo es un gran sucesso! 😃
