@zleap I think you are going to like a Blog post I am just collecting my previous posts for.

I have battled against that 500 chars limit for months now, victories are far apart, not frequent. Best is to consider it carefully when selecting an instance.

Otherwise, Ingo's place is cool, and he's a great admin and veteran Fidonet operator too.

Mega post on why 500 characters is too limiting -- coming in the next couple of days.

@zleap Have a good rest, Paul!

It's afternoon here, I am 5 hours behind UTC. See you tomorrow!

@Sphinx

Wonderful -- this will be useful for people in places where Tor might be needed -- Documenting it into a new Topic soon. Thank you Sphinx! 👍

@nolan

My thoughts on why the cramped 500 characters maximum Toot is a relic which Mastodon developers should consider revising. Or making easier to change, for the few instances that allow their users more modern space and limits.

------

Geez...

I have encountered the hard core Twitter user mentality in some admins I have made this request to.

They were users there for years, are used to the short burst posting, which I as a Forum user find baffling, unattractive and a general pain in the butt, to be perfectly honest.

There was a time, in the older days, when twitter started and ran over SMS. The 140 character limit came from that, as people had voice and SMS access, not mobile data.

The cramped space, terseness resulting from it, I could understand in that situation. But we have left that long behind.

I usually don't feel attracted to responding to the very short one liners. To call that "micro blogging" is a weird distortion of what I consider blogging to be.

I do write long posts in mastodon, and much longer form in Blog posts; have a hell of a time to post an announcement in Twitter for those in their measly 240 chars.

OP at my new Pleroma account, which thankfully doesn't have this Fossilized limit in place.

@Sphinx

>> don't worry. i already found an other way :)

Did you manage to login with a Tor browser? Or just a plain login, regular browser?

I would like to add a topic for this to our Pinafore Forum, just to have a reference there that Tor is not supported (and I have never used it, although VPNs I do use more often.

Thanks, Sphinx.

@nolan

A sweet TL;DR short and sweet intro on Ingo's instance. NerdCulture.de is a Mastodon instance located in Germany.

nerdculture.de/about/more

500 characters maximum toot is painful and unusual punishment for me though. 😜

@globcoco @freemo LOL....

I still have not left the Control Center here. :😜

But will, need to do some stuff. and it's a nice day out. I need extra hours!

@nolan

I think this could be helpful -- the requested file seems to be "statuses" as shown.

Copying @freemo as this might be a local config issue.

Thank you! I have updated the Forum thread for this issue.

@nolan @yann2

Thanks, Nolan.

So the Dev Tools are in the Developer site of Pinafore, I imagine? dev.pinafore.social/

I see -- you meant the Dev Tools in the Browser itself.

And --- guess what, with the Dev branch of Pinafore loaded, the Test post went thru. 😃

qoto.org/@design_RG/1043375291

Unlisted but no error. I will work on this some more, thank you for the prompt reply!

------

Additional Testing :

With the normal branch version of Pinafore, the error appears. I got two screenshots; no error with the Dev branch client. I will be using that one from now on.

@hansw

Ah, I see. Discourse can be installed in a system if it has the Docker already in place.

Seems to be a finicky install, according to Freemo, and needs to be the only package running in that Docker for it to work.

@globcoco

@namark

>> arxiv bot is cancer, kill it with fire!

Sure a heartfelt reaction. I have muted them for months too. 😜

@zleap

>> is there a way to notify people who search on here for arXiv that they should perhaps check out the forum link ?

You can try to catch them searching -- by including their user names in hashtags, so the post will show along with other results. Include the Discourse forum link and an explanation -- so they see the use of opening the link for more info.

@nolan Good morning! Hope you are having a nice weekend.

Question - I am getting this 404 Error on #Pinafore when trying to post at the Local feed. Screen attached.

No error if I am responding to someone's post. This is happening only on one instance, Qoto.org.

What Could I do to solve? Logout could help?

Also, if you have any suggestions for existing sources for Pinafore help and tips, documentation -- I will be collating any info I can find and posting in our PF forum. TY !

@design_RG

@zleap Yes, each of the Bot profiles is easily Searchable and found for interested people. And I bet many Qoto users dread scrolling thru one of their posting storms. 😸

@globcoco I hope you have a productive time -- I am feeling guilty for my much delayed response letters to my penpals, plus the house needs cleaning, dust is on the floor, etc.

So I will try to do some housework and be less visible here. The letters are enjoyable but time consuming, as I write long and thoughtfully to each pen friend.

It has been a lot more satisfying to see a piece of work on a Blog page, reaching dozens, hundreds of readers instead of a single one.

But I have been doing the pen pals for a year now, and it's been good, so got to put some effort into it.

Bonne Journée!

@zleap Thanks, Paul, that would be wonderful.

I hated to dump that bomb in the open, as Freemo is already loaded and he doesn't need more work added; and I can't do it either.

Gracias!

@hansw

Thanks, Hans. The Discourse Forum here at Qoto is run as a tab on any web browser you might prefer to use, there's no installation required, and for casual reading, no account is needed either.

For posting comments, replies and new topics, a new account there can be created; registration is simple, just needs a verified email and you are in.

Yeah, I think the focus for programmers and development teams is mostly in creating and prefecting the software they are involved in.

Documentation is very important, and hopefully someone in the team can do a good job, or they can attract a new person for that function. It makes a huge difference for the users, and also makes communications between users and devs so much better -- translating in between their much different outlooks and written languages.

@globcoco

* Maybe we should consider making the arXiv bot posts unlisted? *

* there's a lot of them, at schedule times of the day, late at night for me here.
*many users might not like to wade thru them.
* some might already have Muted the 5 or so arXiv posting accounts.

I know I did; it clears the timeline pretty effectively, and I have a duty as Mod to monitor all that is posted here.

So, what you Qoto users and Fedi at large think?

Unlisted posts will still go out, they just become harder to discover (as they will not show in any of the timelines.

Ideal solution - in my opinion, Unlisted posts as standard, plus maybe on Digest post per day (with a list of Toots made by the account that day), this being posted as "Public".

Image attached is from the moderators panel -- I just closed a report filled against one of the arXiv bot, accused of Spam.

@fishbowl Ah, very nice!

LineageOS is the new company that evolved from CyanogenMod. I have looked at their site and they do have a lot of supported devices.

Unfortunately, my model is not yet on the list, and this must be an exact match, as the consequences of an error are dire.

Very cool -- maybe write a little report someday, listing what you liked, features, maybe some screenshots?

You could post here or on the Discourse Forums, here at Qoto, where it's nice to be able to use enhanced text, in-line images and other features for a nicer post.

Thank you!
