@nomi I know, I'm playing the "what if" game. 😂 Ajax just allows for requests and responses without reloading the page, and even it's outdated now. But data still could have been gathered at the request level. That's been happening in the request and response headers for an eternity. I think the real reason is using SQL, storing data in 2 dimensional tables would have been a serious nightmare to conglomerate data, vs. storing it in multidimensional noSQL which wasn't around. Tables are fine for large volumes of the same data, but when you have large volumes of types of data, it's enough to make anyone cry.

I'd like to think as dynamic as Geocities was, and with the amount of stupid images and content hosted, they had the server ability to pull it off. Developer wise, they did pull off making a WYSIWYG in browser page editor. If they could have done that, they could have done this.

Sure, one can argue that Google could just crawl Geocities and scrape that data too, but Geocities knew who the users were, and could've directly targeted them, Google still can't scrape a back end.

But the ability for users to easily dump their own content on to the internet has always been #1. WordPress makes up over 75% of the entire internet. Google only scrapes 5% of the internet. Ergo, if the WordPress backend sent user/usage data to 1 central system, that system would most likely crash instantly 😂 But if it didn't, it would have more data on society as a whole, than Google / Meta / Amazon / Microsoft combined. Geocities was like the original WordPress. It was garbage, but had they done it right, they wouldn't be owned by Yahoo, I think they'd own Yahoo. Google would still be bigger because they went horizontal and vertical at the same time while everyone else was focusing on vertical growth.

Hey sorry dude, I didn't mean to type this much but I love playing out scenarios of our past. Next time let's both just trash Myspace as a team beat down. 😂

@admitsWrongIfProven
Perhaps there is a plot by "the big diaper industry", to control quality defecation availability ratios throughout a consistent scale. If we consider that it becomes socially acceptable for all ages to wear diapers, and the average age of potty training is 2 years, and bladder control loss is 65, there is a massive untapped market, that could grow their industry far beyond the likes of big tech, and big energy. As a data scientist, it's perfectly plausible for "big diaper" to subsidize different markets in restricting excremental venues to slowly decrease the social stigmata of sporting disposable undergarments.

While the philosophical ramifications of poop are largely overshadowed by other social issues, we mustn't flush what we cannot perceive, and we shouldn't wipe what others believe.

@Baley Wearing a mask vertically, or multiple masks helps. That will for sure stigmatize you in social events. If you ever need help becoming a social pariah, I'm an expert.

@jmccluskey This isn't just academia. Most all large companies are falling into this trap. I think it's because they're so big that their HR dept. doesn't actually know the requirements to get the job done. They're just trying to accommodate the dreams of those in charge. Also I don't think they're always hard "requirements".

They're probably setting the bar high to filter applicants. If they set the bar low, they'll be inundated with applications to process. I was once hired by IBM, and I wasn't even close to what their technical description of the position required. The actual requirements were actually well within my skill set.

@nomi Geocities was a brilliant idea but executed poorly. I still find the idea of private domains fascinating from a big data perspective. They could have gathered way more data than any other company on their users, simply because users made their sites as a personal reflection of themselves, or more valuably, who they wish they were. Had they capitalized on this, they could have grown into a data monster that even Google would envy.

>> Why are those people so insistent on controlling the poop of others?

Maybe their boss said "Hey, I'm tired of our customers sh**! Do something about it!", and they took it literally.

But I think your ideas are more accurate than mine. 👍

@lavenderlens No, not really come to think of it. 🤔 I wonder why.

@sptnkmmnt Sadly, people don't like this. Humans need a purpose. Going through the regular cycles of life makes people feel purposeless. So they adhere to causes.

You couldn't be more right.

@EubieDrew upon clicking your hashtag, I found a site that plots your views. Nifty.

@skyblond http proxy does not support ws without extra headers..

@freemo I think technology should manage our rights and freedoms. What's more unbiased than an AI?

@baldengineer I don't believe it does, I had to make a few drivers when I was playing around with hackintosh stuff, and found it handles USB quite strangely, and more so with thunderbolt / USB. That said, although there may be no driver, all USB devices are still accessible so there's a high likelyhood someone wrote a script to handle it.

@skyblond got all your ports accounted for in in nginx? Also don't forget that Mastadon uses the websockets protocol which upgrades from http. From what I remember a special set of headers needs to be added for websockets through nginx.

@EubieDrew I'm pretty sure this whole scale is irrelevant. It's a linear 2 dimensional scale to represent 2 social perspectives. Instead of people thinking multi-dimensionally, they're forcing their mindsets into 2 predetermined boxes of variant volume.

What if the issues tied to this scale aren't important to you?

If you're pro personal rights, but also believe large corporations shouldn't be regulated, that doesn't make you centered or balanced does it?

Emotions shouldn't play a factor in human rights. In the court systems, "you hurt my feelings" is not a valid defense, so I'm failing to comprehend why we're dictating sociological rules based on that.

Sorry I've been crunching big data for most of my life. 😂 I'm not trying to rant, I'd really like some answers to these questions from someone who gives them much thought. 👍

@xine This is the first time I've ever heard of pickleball.. but I like learning about new things. Honestly this server is so diverse, I have no idea how everyone else here would feel about it either.
