>"i had a boss threaten to fire me..."

I assume that was a middle manager of some sort. Treating employees with disrespect like that is the quickest way to get them to unionize. You could easily get that guy fired by his boss if you wanted to.

@freeschool

Which one gets you to where you want to be?

@redeagle @trebach@mstdn.social @alan @johnweeks @autumn

Your boss isn't going to fire you for asking for a raise. Whoever originally said that was trying to fool or intimidate people into not asking for a raise. It’s a big pain in the butt to find, hire and train a replacement, so they will avoid that. They might not give you the raise, but they won’t fire you.

The reason why you would want to join with many other workers to ask for a raise is to intimidate your boss. If you all stop working at the same time, that can cost them a lot of money, so they are more likely to just give the raise rather than risk losing even more money by having their workforce walk out on them. However, if conditions are such that they might not lose so much if everyone walks out, then they might not give the raise.

All the rest of the legal stuff is just one side or the other using politicians to try to make laws to shift that basic equation one way the other.

"boil steam" ????

...but you know what I meant. :ablobsmilehappy:

@trinsec

Yeah it's stupid, but entertaining to watch.

@Amikke

I think using solar to harness the Sun's fusion actually has fewer steps than a fusion plant would because a fusion plant would use the EM radiation to boil steam to push turbines to turn a generator to move charge carriers.

A solar cell uses the Sun's fusion EM radiation to knock electrons onto a wire and move them along.

But we'll probably need both anyway to get away from that dirty oil.

Qoto is for people who work (or worked) in a STEM field, but it’s content has very few limitations.

The thumbnail says, "An inclusive free speech instance. All cultures and opinions welcome. Explicit hate speech and harassment strictly forbidden."

You'll find that most of the content is about science and tech because that's what geeks like to talk about, but it's not limited to that. When we discuss other things, the level of discussion tends to be higher and more facts-based than what you'd typically find elsewhere.

Since I'm retired, I'm into many more things now than just tech, so I like to post about those things. But even when we talk about, e.g., cultural topics, it is often from a science/tech perspective.

For example, here's a thread I started about racial bias in a movie where the discussion ended up exploring chromosomal haplogroups, north-African prehistoric migratory patterns, and Glaive style weaponry in the New Kingdom Era. You’d be hard pressed to find that level discussion in many other instances.

@trinsec

That's why there is the principle of stare decisis, which says that deference should be given to previous decisions. Otherwise judges could change their interpretation for each case which would mean there would be no law at all, just what the judges want.

Also, stability of the law is not to say that the law should never change, but it should be determined by the people and their representatives, not unelected judges. But Congress doesn't act to update the laws and they just leave it up to the courts, which erodes democracy. It's been over fifty years since we've had a new amendment to the Constitution.

(given current evernts, I'll run this poll again)

Is it more important to follow the law, or to follow what the Supreme Court says?
