An update on my small group trying to push for #environmentally friendly practices in my area
It is a nightmare. We had a lot of ideas and projects, which I talked about in another post, and right now we had to go through 3 meetings, have been insulted and are facing a lot of irrational, angry resistance for just proposing to do a 200 liters #composting bin for the kitchen scraps in a leftist, squatted social center.
I'm not sure if being more annoyed to the irrational resistance or to the people that, by supporting the idea, are actively keeping us going there to discuss it... again... and again... and again... since one month and counting.
If their point is draining us of any enthusiasm, it's working like a charm.
you know what, screw those winclad and bioedit and outdated #closedsource #phylogenetics software.
I'm just going to learn #R and do everything with it.
I've just redesigned my experimental garden's shape. I couldn't stand all those keyholes and weird paths anymore.
Wrote a small article about it, which is like a long toot with more pictures, in case anyone is curious about it: http://www.arteteco.com/20shapes/
My #phylogenetics professor wants us to work with BioEdit. This program is:
* #proprietarysoftware, even though free (as in free beer)
* Only works with Windows, can't even manage to install it on VM with Wine.
* **is unmaintained since 2009**.
Please #FOSS and #science community, help me find something I can work it that doesn't feel like wearing a shoe filled with beans, or at least install this thing... seems like winxp is slow up to uselessness in VM for some reason.
Thanks!
'Where is the geology department?'
'Straight that way, don't worry, you'll recognize it'
By the way, I have a big (and growing) collection of #anarchist and #solarpunk resources on my tumblr. Check it out if you need ideas for projects, #directaction or #mutualaid
#Africa is getting into #Italy, more and more. In general, Europe is going to eliminate barriers with the North Africa, and going to have an easier passage.
Same thing is to be said about Australia. How will it handle refugee crises, since it's heading more and more in the South East Asia direction?
I can also see how America is getting closer to Russia, while the relationship with Europe are, how to say, divergent. But that's temporary: I'm sure the two will get united again.
All the world is going to be united again.
And that's how you look for #geopolitical evidence in the #PlateTectonics.
#Help wanted!
With some friends we are setting up a local informal environmentalist group, with the aim of pushing forward good practices, spread sustainability, ecological awareness, and this kind of #solarpunk. stuff.
So far we are planning of doing #permaculture , #food production, #composting workshops, #Seed library, #GuerrillaGardening, collective purchase from #RegenerativeAgriculture farms, but we'd like to have more on the todo list.
Help me get out of our echo chamber, and give me your ideas about more activities we could engage ourselves and the local communities in.
Thanks!
Ok, that's my new compost bin.
The 220 l barrel is resting on those small 4 wheels, so that turning it just takes a few seconds, and inside there are 2 half pvc tubes to help mixing.
It is my first compost tumbler, so we'll see how it goes. My main concern is that it reaches the critical mass needed to trigger the composting process, and that is doesn't take long (I need quick compost).
Meanwhile it looks good, and using it is really so easy that even my 9 yo brother can do it!
(Pink lighter on the side for scale reference, I'm sure @PonderingCreek will appreciate)
Seems like my #VerticalGardening is working... spinach, cabbages, lettuce and 2 tomatoes (just to experiment). The fertility is replenish by #composting kitchen scraps from an increasing amount of neighbors, which I plan to repay in food.
That's just a test, if it works properly I expect my yard walls to be covered by fall =D
It is quite difficult to explain evolutionary stable strategies (and their relation to the environmental situation) to people without getting your hands dirty with long #GameTheory examples.
I found this really neat online interactive guide that really, feels a lot like a game and is very enjoyable.
Give it a try!
It is FOSS, code is here: https://github.com/ncase/trust/
This is a photograph of Earth and the Moon taken from 1.44 billion km away, on July 19 2013.
Everyone you've ever known is living out their life here, on this little blue jewel, glittering faintly in the sunlight.
This tiny, delicate planet is all we have in the vastness of the Universe. Every living thing on it is part of our extended family.
All of us together, against a backdrop of unending darkness.
