> So in America when the sun goes down and I sit and watch the long skies over New Jersey and think about the land that rolls away to the West Coast, and all that road, and all the people dreaming on it, I think of Dean Moriarty.

Thinking about On the Road tonight. Someone this week on Mastodon was talking about it as an early hacker text -- trying to draw a long line that connects the beatnicks to ourselves.

I'm on the road myself this week. As I am often.

On the Road, I've read four times. Got three copies at home and have read it four times over. I'm in the mood to pick up a fourth copy for a fifth read through.

My friend, who introduced the book to me ten years ago pointed out how its a very melancholic book. There are those of us who are never happy unless we're on the road, and yet being on the road does not cure of us of our melancholy.

Posts Editing in Mastodon // Consider Friendica @Dr DeJahang

@freemo
We do have some extras here that are very helpful -- the Full Text Search for example, I do find posts very quickly with a couple of well chosen words.

That is sadly missing in many instances, and makes keeping track or content much harder.

I do like some of the added features on GlitchSoc -- if you even have spare time and feel like messing around with the current setup a bit. 😛

Like:

* a trully "Local ONLY" feed - where posts are not federated at all, staying in house only.

(allowing banter and chat and keeping fed feeds clean)

* Bookmarks! They have them. And so does Masto 3.x.x, which incorporated their new feature code.

* a slick additional user control
"Applications control" as shown in screen cap attached.

Screens from hackers.town, which is running :

"Glitchsoc is free open source software forked from Mastodon. You can contribute or report issues on GitHub at glitch-soc/mastodon (v2.9.2+glitch)."

Nie post, good thoughts.

Mastodon is still under active development, and new features can and will be added in the future.

If people see a need and advocate for it, there's a chance a fix or extension might happen.

Or that we can use another platform that is also federated and interacts with mastodon instances.

I have seen some exquisite posts coming from other platforms, like European Discord instances, Friendica shows there in my feed and account there.

And there are others I haven't even got to visiting and looking around at yet.

I think we should look around and have more than one place, ideally other accounts and services that are connected to fediverse, and by their nature, allows the type of content or posting you are interested in.

I am beginning to write a blog and spent some time searching and evaluating alternatives, think I have one I like now.

There I could consolidate things that happen in spontaneous posts here, and are quickly covered up with never ending new posts.

Friendica is a bit similar to Facebook. Masto is to twitter. Write.freely is the blogging platform.

There are places for video, for music, file sharing. Very very rich, our fediverse.

Posts Editing in Mastodon // Consider Friendica @Dr DeJahang

In response by a post by Dr. DeJahang, posting it on the Local feed directly as it is of general interest.

"Hi Moderators/experts, Admin team at QOTO we have all at more button and only edit is missing" by @drdej555

Yes, and that's by design. The developers of Mastodon created it so; in that sense it is similar to Twitter. No editing there either.

Here we do have a quick work around, if you notice a glitch or typo soon after sending in a post.

you can click the Dots menu at the post's bottom right edge, and select Delete / Redraft from there.

This will delete the post (which is already sent out to other instances, but will be recall/deleted there too), and better yet -- it copies the FULL current post content to the Toot Editor window.

You can make any changes desired and Toot it again.

Any replies, favourites or boosts received by the post will be orphaned, lost -- so this is best done very quickly after posting, not later or a day after.

Another possibility is to use a different platform which is also Federated - I am thinking of Friendica, where I have a test account, and which is more like Facebook in looks and functionality..Friendica allows :

* post editing, anytime you want.
* text formatting.
* sorting feeds by time, or by personal mentions, etc.

It does allow following mastodon accounts, replying and fully interacting with them.

I made a thread of my testing and observations about Friendica here : qoto.org/@design_RG/1031784336

@drdej555 Thank you for the post!

May I suggest something? I find that longer posts do work better for me if I use a CW, content warning on them.

That keeps the post small on the flowing Feed streams, and selecting a good Content Warning message is key to bringing people in to expand it and look at the full post.

We are competing for readers with many other posts and stimuli. A good CW text, one that gets people curious, interested is a good approach.

Selecting an image to go along with it too -- color, size, content related to the post.

I enjoy the editing process and selecting these to see best results.

Hope you don't mind, just thoughts of a fellow active writer. Have a good day!

Wonderful idea! I like it. The Forum is not very well know here, but can be a place to organize and leave more permanent markers - thinks we can point users at, etc.

Second the motion! 🆗

If it was possible to pass account authorization from mastodon to Discourse that could open the doorr and improve participation.

The forum is a bit sparse and visually different from my past experiences, but I like forums a lot. Willing to push it for growth. 👍

It does allow text formatting, longer posts, editing...

@design_RG i can't thank you enough! Like seriously, you're always ready to help and calm me with your words:-)

And I thank you back, for letting me know that what I do, with sincere heart, has a meaningful impact.

❤️ Thanks Aaditi.

You should consider learning a bit about Buddhism. I am fascinated by it, although I have never pursued it, so far.

It is not a religion in the traditional sense, and I find it profound.
@IshaKaushik@mastodon.social

@freemo @kosame Yuo will see posts by other users in a thread discussion, and maybe get interested in their posts; visiting their profile is the next step for me.

We also see a lot of new people via Boosts in our Home feeds. Your followed accounts posts, as well as any boosts they create, will show up there.

I do miss a more formal, focused, Forum like structure, but here it is the way it is.

We will have Bookmarks in upcoming versions of Mastodon, some forked modded versions already have them (Glitchsoc being a particularly interesting one.)

Google used to allow their employees (maybe not contractors, but their full time staff) to reserve a percentage of their time for individually selected research projects. That was an interesting programme.

Then they became open capital, watched and with pressure from big shareholders, and it's been downhill from there.

Dust in the Wind, all we are is dust in the wind... (Kansas, beautiful song)

I like and relate closely with your opening thoughts in the OP.

Very humbling indeed.

Good morning! 😄

I am glad you have been reading and enjoying the guides, I love reading and am still looking for more information, all the time.

You mentioned Fedilab, I did a series of posts describing my testing and experience with it, found it was a nice client.

Better yet, thanks to the awesome FULL Text search we enjoy here at QOTO (and is NOT for granted, sadly missed in other instances), I could very quickly retrieve the link to my thread - it's here:

qoto.org/web/statuses/10315054

Explaining the full text search - a life saver, if you remember a couple of unique words from your post. Just enter them, in my case "fedilab lite" and I got a fast results screen.

A nice tip some people use is to leave personal hashtags in threads they think importante. Karl uses a cute one, , lol. A play on his username which is a conservative version of Karl Marx.

Why Fedilab Lite ? If there's a Lite version I usually go for it. FB Messenger and app, Spotify, all these are available in Lite, smaller and faster probably.

The thread has an evaluation and direct link to the F-Droid site, a good place to find open source and well made software for android phones.

Better Bookmarks will come - it's already present in some modified, forked versions of Mastodon. I use another instance that runs GlitchSoc, and it's a nice system. They already have bookmarks, Local instance only posting (which does not federate at all -- a great idea imo). and other enhancements.

Glitchsoc is the leading edge in Masto development, imo. But Gargron is aware and incorporating some of their ideas and innovations as his work progresses.

One possible way to keep track of things - for me, using a laptop or desktop mostly. Copy links to threads and keep on a text editor for reference.

Like I do with a standard welcome message for new users, including a pointer to the Lifehackers mastodon guide. Very handy, and appreciated by the recipients, I think.

Uhmm, the coffee already kicked in pretty good, as you surely noticed, lol...

On to more reading, have a good one, friends.

Thank you, Kosako! Nice post, link to aditional information, perfect! 👍 💯
