@Acer

I'm sorry. I meant that I don't believe that the claims that Rudder made are true.

I didn't doubt that the quote itself was accurate. 🙂

@Acer

>"If you look at your friend Lisa's Facebook page..."

I don't think any of that is true.

@bibliolater

This is not news.

Here's a publication by Dr. Wilbur Olin Atwater, dd. 1915, titled "Principles of Nutrition and Nutritive Value of Food".

He advocated an affordable diet that focused on nutrient-rich foods and less sugar, fat and starchy foods.

And what about AI bots. Gender is often assigned to them, but they don't have genitalia.

Regarding color, my understanding (without looking anything up) is that structural color is a general term that refers to any color that results from an interference pattern from multiple waves emanating from a material.

The term "thin film interference" is a specific case of structural color which occurs when two layered media of differing refractive index allow light to both reflect and pass through the upper thin layer and reflect from the bottom layer (the interface of two differing media) resulting in two reflected waves that interfere and create a color. (examples, oil on water or soap bubbles)

The reason you get rainbow colors with thin film interference is because either the thin layer varies in thickness or also because of the angle of incidence -- anything viewed off of 90° is going to be a longer distance between the upper and lower layer which results in a different frequency of interference. This is why the colors change as you change the viewing angle.

>"...hand out strings of colored beads for people to wear if they do not want to be photographed...."

Like they do at Mardi Gras. :ablobgrin:

Few days ago I've setup a non-federating video platform on u.fail for some fun and adorable content to create some smiles on faces.. 😺

I want to keep it ad-free and everyone can upload to 512M video's and 1GB for 'pro' (A little paid tier to pay for it all)

No account needed to browse some vid's and suggestions are welcome :cat_hug_triangle:

I feel sad for the people who died in that Titan sub. :blobsad:

I wonder if the other companies will be resuming tours. If they do, I wonder if they will tour the wreckage of the Titan submersible as well as the Titanic. :ablobthinking:

That seems morbid to me, but then the whole idea of touring the Titanic wreckage seems morbid.

Retro SciFi Film of the Week…

Cocoon (1985)

Here's another first contact science fiction film. This one’s directed by Ron Howard. Many of the characters in this film are elderly people, who are played by long time veteran actors including Don Amiche who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in this film.

The actors who played the elderly people in this film we're all born very early in the 20th century with the exception Wilfred Brimley who often played characters who were older than he was. Brimley began his career as a stuntman and later as a character actor, but I'm not sure if he did his own stunts in this film or not.

One nice aspect of this film is that it has an original plot formed from elements of previous films, it's not a typical first-contact-with-aliens type of film. The special effects were well done also.

Young people may not have heard of this one and it could easily get lost in the backlist of a film catalog, so if you've never heard of this film you should check it out.

@LouisIngenthron

It only takes about 10 seconds to plug it in - you don't have to stand there and wait for the tank to fill up, it just charges while you shop or work or whatever.

If they're adding a tax to the charge, it's not much. It only costs me about $3.00 to fill up the "tank".

I think the next ad-intrusion mode will be ads that automatically play inside the driverless car while it's taking you to your destination. (Not looking forward to that one)

@medigoth

How does that work when you write a novel for a franchise like that? Do you just get a license from them like if a company produces a product under the brand? Or do they commission you to write the novel? Or does an author write something on spec and try to get it blessed by the studio? How does that work?

@admitsWrongIfProven @freemo

😂 😂 😂

accessible description of freemo's toot:
@freemo says "Communists are adorable...";
there is an image of a tweet from Twitter by a user named @TheAliceSmith; the tweet shows a picture of John Lennon and Yoko Ono during their Bed-in protest; Lennon is standing and Ono is sitting and they are waiting for a maid to make their bed so they can get back in their bed and continue their protest; the text in the tweet says, "That moment when you are a working-class communist millionaire but you have to wait for the maid to finish making your bed so you can continue to Imagine no possessions."

@LouisIngenthron

I haven't seen one of those ads in years...

I drive an electric car.

@LouisIngenthron

>"Okay, I'm officially sick of hearing about the poor rich people in their submarine."

You must still be watching/reading old media.

@Empiricism_Reloaded

>"...How can you educate (unethical) idiots without offending them? "

Here's a start...

qoto.org/@Pat/1102095792473559

(should work for ethical folks, too)

@Empiricism_Reloaded

>"...Or when people on social media actually seem to believe that buying an electric car is doing their "bit" for the climate...."

I believe that is part of the solution. (A "bit" of the solution anyway.)

What do you suggest people do? What do you do?

@medigoth

There’s another aspect of this…

Some people are neuro-divergent and may have difficulty communicating or whatever, so I try to give the benefit of the doubt. But that depends on my mood at the time. 🙂

@medigoth

I put my general blocking criteria on my profile.

It’s pretty much what you just described in you toot. I also block child porn.

And maybe graphic gore that’s not CW’ed.

Sometimes I’ll block someone if they only post a lot of stuff in a foreign language that I’ll never read that it just fills up my feed.

Also, I’ll block someone if they are unresponsive. If I respond their toots and they never answer back, I’ll mute them so I don’t waste time again talking to a vacuous poster.

Other than that I try to resist blocking people.

@stux

I've seen that. It's pretty funny and an amazing demonstration of what is possible for deep fakes.

(It's not worth spending more than a couple of minutes on, though, gets old quick.)
